  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the stress thresholds in crack development and the corrected fracture toughness of KURT granite under dry and saturated conditions. The stress thresholds were identified by calculation of inelastic volumetric strain from an uniaxial compression test. The corrected fracture toughness was estimated by using the Level II method (Chevron Bend specimen), suggested by ISRM (1988), in which non-linear behaviors of rock was taken into account. Average crack initiation stress(σci) and crack damage stress(σcd) under a dry condition were 91.1 MPa and 128.7 MPa. While, average crack initiation stress(σci) and crack damage stress(σcd) under a saturated condition were 58.2 MPa and 68.2 MPa. The crack initiation stress and crack damage stress of saturated ones decreased 36% and 47% respectively compared to those of dry specimens. A decrease in crack damage stress is relatively larger than that of crack initiation stress under a saturated condition. This indicates that the unstable crack growth can be more easily generated because of the saturation effect of water compared to the dry condition. The average corrected fracture toughness of KURT granite was 0.811 MPa·m0.5. While, the fracture toughness of saturated KURT granite(KCB) was 0.620 MPa·m0.5. The corrected fracture toughness of rock in saturated condition decreases by 23.5% compared to that in dry condition. It is found that the resistance to crack propagation decreases under the saturated geological condition.

  • A flexible electronic device deformed by external force causes the failure of a semiconductor die. Even without failure, the repeated elastic deformation changes carrier mobility in the channel and increases resistivity in the interconnection, which causes malfunction of the integrated circuits. Therefore it is desirable that a semiconductor die be placed on a neutral line where the mechanical stress is zero. In the present study, we investigated the effects of design factors on the position of neutral line by finite element analysis (FEA), and expected the possible failure behavior in a flexible face-down packaging system assuming flip-chip bonding of a silicon die. The thickness and material of the flexible substrate and the thickness of a silicon die were considered as design factors. The thickness of a flexible substrate was the most important factor for controlling the position of the neutral line. A three-dimensional FEA result showed that the von Mises stress higher than yield stress would be applied to copper bumps between a silicon die and a flexible substrate. Finally, we suggested a designing strategy for reducing the stress of a silicon die and copper bumps of a flexible face-down packaging system.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate bond properties of GFRP used in SFRC (Steel fiber reinforced concrete) and normal concrete. The experimental variables were rebar diameter (D13, D16), steel fiber volume fraction (0~2%) and cover thickness ($1.5d_b$, $5.4d_b$). The experimental results showed a different failure mode depending on the cover thickness. Through the tested specimens, splitting failure occurred for the specimens with small cover thickness and pull out failure occurred in the specimens with large cover thickness. Introduction of steel fiber caused the specimens to have more ductile behavior of bond stresss-lip after peak stress, but they did not increase the bond strength significantly. These failure modes were shown in both steel reinforcement and GFRP. However, from the difference of micro structure of bond failure mechanism between steel rebar and GFRP rebar, more ductile behavior was observed in GFRP-specimens after maximum bond strength was reached.

  • Although composite construction has more mechanical advantages compared to noncomposite construction, the design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the validity of the application of noncomposite construction to skew bridges was checked. Also, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, partial composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics and dynamic behaviors of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. Although the slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders results in the reduction of seismic total base shear in the transverse direction due to period elongation, it causes an undesirable behavior of skew bridges by the modification in mode shapes and distributions of stiffness. Shear connectors placed by minimum requirements for partial composite action have an effect on reducing the girder stresses and deck stresses; except case of some skew bridges, the magnitude of the girder stresses and deck stresses obtained from partial composite skew bridges is similar to or slightly more than those acquired from composite skew bridges.

  • The matric suction and volumetric water content of dredging soils obtained from Saemangeum area were measured by the automated Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) apparatus under both drying and wetting conditions. Based on the test result, SWCCs of the dredging soils were estimated by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The matric suction of drying process is larger than that of wetting process at a same effective degree of saturation. The suction stresses for various matirc suctions were estimated using Lu and Likos(2006) model and the Suction Stress Characteristic Curves (SSCC) were predicted using the independent parameter of SWCC. The suction stress of drying path was increased and decreased, while the suction stress of wetting path was continuously decreased with increasing the effective degree. Also, the suction stress of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same effective degree of saturation. The Hydraulic Conductivity Function(HCF) was also predicted by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The hydraulic conductivity was increased with increasing the volumetric water content. The hydraulic conductivity of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same matric suction. According to the results of SWCCs and SSCCs, the hysteresis phenomenon of suction stress or matric suction during both drying and wetting paths was occurred. The main reason of hysteresis phenomenon is a ink bottle effect of water among soil particles.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the stress distribution aspect of unrestored and restored combined shape (wedge shape occulusally and saucer shape gingivally) class V cavity, which found frequently in clinical cases. A maxillary second permolar restored with a combined shape class V composite restorations were modeled using the three dimensional finite element method. Static occlusal load of 170 N was applied on lingual incline of buccal cusp at the angle of $45^{\circ}$ with the longitudinal axis of the tooth. And three dimensional finite element analysis was taken by ANSYS (Version 6.0, Swanson Analysis System Co., Houston, U.S.A) program which represent the stress distribution on unrestored and restored cavity wall and margin. The conclusions were as follows. 1. Compared to the unrestored cavity, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced and in restored cavity. 2. Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased in restored cavity in comparison with the unrestored cavity. 3. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the cementoenamel junction and line angle of the cavity base were reduced more than in the flowable restoration. 4. In the hybrid and hybrid/flowable composite resin restoration, Von Mises stress at the occlusal and cervical cavity margin and wall were increased more than in the flowable restoration.

  • Purpose of present study is to investigate the effects of thread pitch in coronal portion in scalloped implant with 2 different connections on loading stress using 3 dimensional finite element analysis. Scalloped implant with 4 different thread pitches (0.4mm, 0.5mm, 0.6, and 0.7mm) in the coronal part was modeled with 2 different implant-abutment connections. Platform matching connection had the same implant and abutment diameter so that they were in flush contact at the periphery while platform mismatching connection had smaller abutment diameter than implant so that their connection was made away from periphery of implant-bone interface. Occlusal loading of 100N force was applied vertically and 30 degree obliquely to all 8 models and the maximum von Mises bone stress was identified. Loading stress as highly concentrated in cortical bone. Platform mismatching scalloped implant with small thread pitch (0.4mm) model had consistently lowest maximum von Mises bone stress in vertical and oblique loads. Platform matching model had lowest maximum von Mises bone stress with 0.6mm thread pitch in vertical load and with 0.4mm thread pitch in oblique load. Platform mismatching connection had important roles in reducing maximum von Mises bone stress. Scalloped implant with smaller coronal thread pitch showed trend of reducing maximum von Mises bone stress under load.

  • For the growth optimization of InAs/GaSb (8/8-ML) strained-layer superlattice (SLS), the structure has been grown under various conditions and modes and characterized by the high-resolution x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. In this study, the strain modulation is induced by changing parameters and modes, such as the growth temperature, the ratio of V/III beam-equivalent-pressure (BEP), and the growth interruption (GI), and the strain variation is analyzed by measuring the angle separation of 0th-order satellite peak in XRD patterns. The XRD results reveal that the growth temperature and the V/III(Sb/Ga) ratio are major parameters to change the crystallineity and the strain modulation in SLS structures, respectively. We have observed that the SLS samples with compressive strain prepared in this study are show a transition to tensile strain with decreasing V/III(Sb/Ga) ratio, and the GI process is a sensitive factor giving rise to strain modulation. These results obtained in this study suggest that optimized growth temperature and V/III(Sb/Ga) ratio are $350^{\circ}C$ and 20, respectively, and the appropriate GI time is approximately 3 seconds just before InAs growth that the crystallineity is maximized and the strain relaxation is minimized.

  • Stability and mechanical deformation behavior of rock masses are highly dependent on the mechanical characteristics of contained discontinuities. Therefore, mechanical characteristics of the discontinuities should be considered in the design of tunnel and underground structures. In this study, direct shear tests for rough granite joints were carried out under constant normal stiffness conditions. Effects of initial normal stress, shear velocity, and surface roughness on the characteristics of shear strength and deformation behaviors were examined. Results of shear testing under constant normal stiffness conditions reveal that shear behaviors could be classified into two categories, based on the amount of decrease in shear stress at the Int peak shear stress. With initial normal stiffness increasing, it turned out that shear displacement at peak stress and the first peak shear stress increased, however friction angle and friction coefficient showed decrease. In case of shear stiffness and average friction coefficient, it turned out that they are not dependent on the initial normal stress. Minor effects of shear velocity on rough joints were observed in several shear quantities. However, the effects of shear velocity were insignificant regardless of the normal stress increase. Change of shear strength and deformation characteristics on joint roughness were examined, however, it turned out that the variations were attributed to deviation of shear test specimens.
