It is necessary to study on the stress concentration experimentally, which is the main reason to avoid mechanical dilapidation and failure, when designing a mechanical structure. Stress concentration factor of a specimen of cantilever beam with a circular hole in the center was measured using both strain gage and photoelastic methods in this paper. In strain-gage measurement, three strain gages along the line near a hole of the specimen were installed and maximum strain was extrapolated from three measurements. In photoelastic measurement, two methods were employed. First, the Babinet-Soleil compensation method was used to measure the maximum strain. Secondly, photoelastic 4-step phase shilling method was applied to observe the strain distribution around the hole. Measurements obtained by different experiments were comparable within the range of experimental error.
Earth pressures acting on unmovable rigid walls vary according to loading-unloading conditions due to compaction experienced by backfill soil. Appropriate coefficients of earth pressure at rest with considering this influence need to be determined to estimate earth pressures more reasonably.0 this study, a single cycle hysteretic model simulating soil's loading-unloading-reloading behavior under $K_o-condition$ was reproduced by conducting a series of $K_o-triaxial$ test for compacted residual soils. Based on the results, coefficients of earth pressure at rest at each stage of stress paths such as, virgin loading, unloading and reloading were determined. Also, applicabilities of empirical equations to the estimation of the coefficients were evaluated by comparing the experimental results with those estimated by the equations. As a result, it was concluded that the empirical equations could be applied reasonably to the estimation of the coefficients for compacted residual soils in cases where some amount of error might be acceptable for the reloading stage of the hysteretic model.
The vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the contact zone between the overlay (mortar layer) and substratum (base concrete) can be the main cause of the failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures. The development of tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, due to external rainy condition was analytically investigated using finite element method. Rainfall intensity $(n_R\;=\;1/a,\;t_R\;=\;10min,\;60min)$, thickness of overlay (do=1,2,4,10 cm) and overlay material (CM,ECM,EM) were the main variables in the analyses. An equation was suggested with which the development of vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the rainy condition could be determined. Using this equation, it is possible to select proper material properties and overlay thicknesses to prevent failure in the contact zone due to thermally transient condition caused by rainfall.

A numerical procedure is proposed as a mesh-size insensitive structural stress definition that gives a stress state at a weld toe with relatively large mesh size. The structural stress values obtained using different finite element types, i.e. shell element and solid element, are examined for typical weld structures. The calculation procedures are performed using the balanced nodal forces and moments obtained from finite element solutions. A consistent formulation based on work equivalent argument has been implemented to transform the balanced nodal forces and moments from shell to line force and line moments at each nodal position. The mesh-insensitivity, the effect of distance $\delta$(where the stress is calculated) and the potential limitations of the structural stress method are examined for various types of weldments. Based on the results from this study, it is expected to develop a more precise stress estimation technique for fatigue strength assessment of welded structures.

The fatigue crack growth analysis based on the fracture mechanics is useful to the estimation of the fatigue life on welded structures under cyclic loading. The analysis procedure in fatigue crack growth under uniform axial loading is applicable to bending fatigue problem as well. The intent of the present study is to show the procedure for calculating the fatigue crack propagation lifetimes of deckplates under bending stress and to explain the crack growth rates for the two dimensional crack problems. It is shown that the fatigue crack grows at a decreasing rate and the fatigue life depends on the initial crack length and the crack shape. The numerically predicted crack growth agree with the experimental data.
Static and fatigue tests were performed to evaluate fatigue strength in scallop at field bolted joints of longitudinal rib and deck plate in orthotropic steel decks. Numerical parametric studies using finite elemtn analysis were also conducted to show the influence of parameters such as length and radius of scallop, and thickness of deckplate on the stress concentration at the scallop. In the low stress level, fatigue tests yielded cracks at the scallop while in the high stress level, catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate. Fatigue strength was compared with JSSC specification and the predicted S-N curves using Shigley and Juvinall methods, and a satisfactory result was obtatined.
From the seismic network data of the Korea Institute of Geology, Mining & Materials during 1995-1996, we derived a composite fault-plane solution of the microearthquakes occurred in the Yangsan fault area. The composite fault-plane solution of nine events shows the orientation of fault 15 ± 3°in strike, 60 ± 8°in dip and 140°in rake or 128 ± 3°in strike, 56 ± 8°in dip and 37°in rake. The compressional axis of the stress field trends ENE to WSW, and this field suggests strike-slip motion with thrust component. The result is consistent with the 1996 Yeong-weol event and the stress field in and around the Korean Peninsula, previously reported.
Considering wind speed uncertainty, reliability analysis of the LNG unloading arm at Tongyoung Production Site was performed. Extreme distribution of wind speed was estimated from the data collected at the weather center and wind load was calculated using wind velocities and coefficients of wind pressure. The unloading arm was modeled with plate and solid elements. Contact elements were used to describe the interface between base of structure andground. Response surface for maximum effective stress was found for reliability analysis and then reliability functions was defined and used to determine exceeding probability of allowable and yield stresses. In addition, sensitivity analysis was also performed to estimate the effect of possible material deterioration in the future.
Optimal orthodontic treatment could be possible when a orthodontist can predict and control tooth movement by applying a planned force system to the dentition. The moment to force(M/F) ratio at the bracket, has been shown to be a primary determinate of the pattern of tooth movement. As various n/F ratios are applied to the bracket on the tooth crown, strain distribution in periodontium can be changed, and the center of rotation in tooth movement can be determined. It is, therefore, so important in clinicalorthodontics to know the strain distribution in a force system of a M/F ratio. The purpose of this study was to analyze the strain distribution in orthodontic force system by strain gauge attached to tooth root, and to evaluate the usage of the method. For this study, an experimental upper anterior arch model was constructed, where upper central incisors, on the root surface of which, 8 strain gauges were attached, were implanted In the photoelastic resin, as in the case of 4mm midline diastema. Three types of closing of upper midline diastema closure were compared : 1. with elastomeric chain(100g force) in no arch wire, 2. elastomeric chain in .016“ round steel wire, 3. elastomeric chain in .016”x.022“ rectangular steel wire. The results were as follows. 1. Strain distributions on labial, lingual, mesial and distal root surface of tooth were able to be evaluated with the strain gauge method, and the patterns of tooth rotation were understood by presuming the location of moment arm. 2. Extrusion and tipping movement of tooth was seen in closing in no arch wire, and intrusion and bodily movement was seen with steel arch wire inserted.
