In order to quantify the anisotropic properties of rock included joints and shear behavior in joint surface, the mold is Produced for rock joint surface using gypsum Plaster and Peformed for replicated joint models made of cement mortar. Rock sample is measured using mechanical profilometer before testing and their result is expressed quantitatively. The statistical parameters and the fractal dimension by fractal theory for roughness is investigated its coordinate value for numerical process. The shear strength to the shear displacement in low level normal stress ismaintained or increased in most joint models. Their results present that this relationship is depended several roughness properties in joint model for natural rock joint. The relationship between the shear strength and the Properties for profiles estimated by some statistical parameter in roughness has the low correlation and is not constant. The result between the data for direct shear test and using Barton's equation, Barton's equation has not the effectiveness for the effect of anisotropy and has not suitable to recognizing the properties for joint surface. It means that JRC has not the properties of anisotropic rock surface. The fractal dimension is well correlated with the data of direct shear test than those of JRC. New experimental formulae using fractal dimension is comported with the anisotropic properties for direct shear test.
Ultra thin TiN films (50∼700nm thickness) were deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel substrates using a reactive DC magnetron sputtering deposition process to investigate their wear and friction properties. Dry sliding wear tests of the films were carried out against hardened steel and alumina counterparts using a pin-on-disk type wear tester at room temperature. Variation of friction coefficient was measured as a function of film thickness, load, sliding speed and roughness of the substrate. Worn surfaces of the film were examined by a scanning electron microscope. Wear resistance of the TiN film increased with the increase of the film thickness. The TiN film showed relatively high wear resistance in spite of its ultra thin thickness when it is mated by the steel counterpart, while it showed poor wear resistance with the alumina counterpart. The good wear resistance with the steel counterpart was explained by the formation of oxide layers on the film surface and sound interface character between the ultra thin film and the substrate.

This paper presents a bond test to find the effect of shear key and edge length from the bonded FRP in near surface-mounted(NSM) retrofit using FRP plate. Main parameters in the test are the location and size of shear key and the edge length. For the test, 10 specimens were made by embedding FRP plate of $3.6mm{\times}16mm$ into $400mm{\times}200(300)mm{\times}400mm$ concrete block and fixing it by using epoxy. Tensile load was applied to the FRP of the specimens until failure and was recorded at each load increase. In addition, the bond slip and elongation of FRP were measured during the test. From the test, it was found that the further the shear key located from the loading, the higher strength we could get. The bond strength inversely depended on the size of shear key. Especially, when the size of shear key was to be lagger than certain size, the bond strength decreased to very low value; even less than that of the case without shear key. The bond strength somewhat increased corresponding to the increase of edge length from the bonded end of FRP to loading in spite of same bond length. The bond-slip between FRP and concrete governed overall deformation in the bond test of NSM FRP so that the effect of excessive slip is necessary to be considered in the design.

This study examines the compressive strength, elastic modulus and splitting tensile strength of geopolymer concrete in order to evaluate its mechanical characteristics according to the admixing of fly ash and blast furnace slag. Moreover, identical tests are also conducted considering the amount of powder, the mixing ratio of alkali activator and the mixing ratio of silica fume for further comparative analysis considering various variables. The comparison with the formulae specified in Korean and overseas codes reveal that a mixing ratio of 18% is adequate for the alkali activator and that a replacement ratio of 5% by silica fume is recommended for silica fume. The elastic modulus of the geopolymer concrete appears to increase slightly with the increase of the compressive strength per variable and age and to be smaller than the values predicted by the formulae specified in Korean and overseas codes. In addition, the examination of the stress-strain curves shows that the geopolymer concrete exhibits ductile behavior compared to the conventional OPC. In view of the splitting tensile strength, high strength is observed for a powder content of $400kg/m^3$ and a replacement ratio of 18% by silica fume. The resulting ratio of the compressive strength to the splitting tensile strength is seen to range between 8.7 and 10.2%.
In Korea-LTPP(Long Tenn Pavement Performance) project, the full depth asphalt pavement test sections are constructed on the national highway to evaluate the structural capacity of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber. Truck loading test and FWD test were performed to measure the structural capacity of test sections. Test results showed that the reinforcement of glass fiber installed at between surface and intermediate asphalt layer decreased the strain at the bottom of surface layer and moved up the stress neutral axis in asphalt layer. As a result, the tensile stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of reinforced asphalt pavement, while the compressive stress was developed at the bottom of intermediate asphalt layer of unreinforced asphalt pavement. On the other hand, the tensile strain at the bottom of asphalt base layer didn't show a difference between glass fiber reinforced and unreinforced pavements. From the FWD test, it was shown that the surface deflection of asphalt pavement reinforced with glass fiber decreased 24 percents comparing to that of unreinforced asphalt pavement. This shows that the reinforcement with glass fiber appears to improve the rutting resistance of asphalt pavement.
The recycled polyethylene composites with various ratio of ground waste tire powder were manufactured by using a fully intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder for the reuse of waste tire scrap. In this investigation, the ground waste tire powders (GWTP) were blended with virgin HDPE and recycled polyethylene in the weight ratio of 0 to 50 wt.%. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength were measured by using ASTM standard. The experimental results for the various composite showed that the tensile strength of composites decreased with increasing GWTP ratio, while elongation at break increased with the amounts of GWTP. On the other hand, the impact strength for the three kinds of composites showed maximum at the 30 wt.% of GWTP and then decreased. Morphology of the fracture surface tends to be rough with increasing waste tire powder content. Rheological properties were investigated by measuring the shear viscosity against shear rates and softening temperatures. They showed that melt viscosity of rubber composites in this study subsequently increased with increasing GWTP content as a result of increase of flow resistance against external stress and followed a Power-law behavior.

When doing underground excavation works for the purpose of constructing large underground structures for a building in the limited space in downtown area, the stability of the adjacent ground must be top priority, and to accomplish this, it is essential to review the retaining wall construction carefully. H-Pile, which has been mainly used as a stress-carrying material in temporary earth-retaining structures, is most likely to be abandoned after completion of the works for the basement exterior wall in relation to contiguous bored piles, so it will result in a waste of material. To improve this situation, Basement Composite Wall where H-Pile and basement wall are compounded, has been developed. This wall is being used most frequently in many local construction sites. In this study, five specimens are made in order to evaluate the shear resistance of the basement composite wall and tested. Test parameter is the composition ratio and wall thickness according to shear connectors. Test result shows that the shear strength is improved when the composite ratio is increased but the magnitude is not much. A formula, which considers the contribution of concrete, web of H-pile as well as flange' effect in calculation of shear strength of composite basement wall, is suggested and used to calculation of the strength of specimens. It is found that there is a good co-relation between test result and the calculated one by the formula.
Precipitation is one of a major causes of landslides by rising of pore water pressure, which leads to fluctuations of soil strength and stress. For this reason, precipitation is the most frequently used to determine the landslide thresholds. However, using only precipitation has limitations in predicting and estimating slope stability quantitatively for reducing false alarm events. On the other hand, Soil Moisture (SM) has been used for calculating slope stability in many studies since it is directly related to pore water pressure than precipitation. Therefore, this study attempted to evaluate the appropriateness of applying soil moisture in determining the landslide threshold. First, the reactivity of soil saturation level to precipitation was identified through time-series analysis. The precipitation threshold was calculated using daily precipitation (Pdaily) and the Antecedent Precipitation Index (API), and the hydrological threshold was calculated using daily precipitation and soil saturation level. Using a contingency table, these two thresholds were assessed qualitatively. In results, compared to Pdaily only threshold, Goesan showed an improvement of 75% (Pdaily + API) and 42% (Pdaily + SM) and Changsu showed an improvement of 33% (Pdaily + API) and 44% (Pdaily + SM), respectively. Both API and SM effectively enhanced the Critical Success Index (CSI) and reduced the False Alarm Rate (FAR). In the future, studies such as calculating rainfall intensity required to cause/trigger landslides through soil saturation level or estimating rainfall resistance according to the soil saturation level are expected to contribute to improving landslide prediction accuracy.

The potassium cream soap with fatty acid called cleaning foam has a crystal gel structure, and unlike an emulsion system, it is weak to shear stress and shows characteristics that are easily separated under high temperature storage conditions. The crystal gel structure of cleansing foams is significantly influenced by the nature and proportion of fatty acids, degree of neutralization, and the nature and proportion of polyols. In order to investigate the effect of these parameters on the crystal gel structure, a ternary system consisting of water/KOH/fatty acid was investigated in this study. The investigation of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) revealed that the eutectic point was found at the ratio of myristic acid (MA) : stearic acid (SA) = 3 : 1 and ternary systems were the most stable at the eutectic point. However, the increase in fatty acid content had little effect on stability. On the basis of viscosity and polarized optical microscopy (POM) measurements, the optimum degree of neutralization was found to be about 75%. The system was stable when the melting point (Tm) of the ternary system was higher than the storage temperature and the crystal phase was transferred to lamellar gel phase, but the increase in fatty acid content had little effect on stability. The addition of polyols to the ternary system played an important role in changing the Tm and causing phase transition. The structure of the cleansing foams were confirmed through cryogenic scanning electron microscope (Cryo-SEM), small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS) analysis. Since butylene glycol (BG), propylene glycol (PG), and dipropylene glycol (DPG) lowered the Tm and hindered the lamellar gel formation, they were unsuitable for the formation of stable cleansing foam. In contrast, glycerin, PEG-400, and sorbitol increased the Tm, and facilitated the formation of lamellar gel phase, which led to a stable ternary system. Glycerin was found to be the most optimal agent to prepare a cleansing foam with enhanced stability.
