  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of two different characteristics of music(tempo) and advertising photograph(type) in a fashion store on consumers' emotional responses and approach behavior and to suggest competitive in-store atmospheric strategies. To test the conceptual model, this study used a video simulation method. Researchers selected a fashion casual wear retail store for young people and videotaped to provide realistic store settings. Two different levels of background music(fast, slow) and advertising photograph(sexy, cheerful) were inserted into the video clip generating four stimuli. Including a stimulus for the control group, 5 video clips were created. A total of 289 subjects answered the questionnaire after viewing a two-minute video clips. The results are as follows: First, advertising photograph in a store had a significant effect on consumers' in-store emotional state, whereas musical tempo did not. Second, the effect of in-store consumers' emotional state on behavioral reponses were investigated. Results showed that consumers' positive emotional state lead to consumers' approach behavior. The results of this study indicated that background music and advertising photograph in a fashion store affected consumers' in-store emotional state, and ultimately these affected consumers' positive approach behavior. Thus retailer should try to create a pleasant store environment using effective store atmospheric factors like background music and advertising photograph.

  • By employing in-depth interviews with a total of 14 television producers, the study seeks to investigate how the use of documentary background music has changed in the rapidly evolving media technology. This study reveals two major findings. First, the use of traditional compositional background music in TV documentary has been decreased for the last 20 years, while library music with various sound sources has been more likely to be used due to its artistic value, its digitalized formats, and its convenience. Second, the popularity of the library music use has changed the cooperative relationship between TV documentary producers and music directors, and their views on background music. Overall, compared to the past, the new media technology (e.g., much easier, faster editing process and communication through e-mails) has helped to come up with the current trend of using more library music. This trend however implies that the dependency of library music only may lose the unique value of television documentary as a work of creative art and eventually downgrade the quality of the programs. Further practical implications are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of vocal and instrumental background music on a verbal memorizing task. Participants were 30 undergraduate and graduate students and were randomly divided into two groups. All participants in both groups took a pretest and a posttest to examine the improvement of the memorization. Background music was inserted during the memorization task. Subjects in Group A listened to a vocal recording whereas Group B listened to the same music except with a cello playing the melody of the vocal part. All participants were asked to take the posttest to examine the improvement of their knowledge after the memorization. The t-test was used to compare the two groups. Results indicated that Group A(8.93) exhibited higher mean scores than Group B(7.46) but there were no significant differences t(28) = 1.38, p < .05. This study implies that lyrics does not distract word memorization and background music does not influence cognition directly.

A daycare center serving the preschool-age children of Korean nationals and immigrant families were the site for this research. Utilizing the elements of a musical play (e.g., role playing, narration, and joint music activity), the program was developed for improving interaction among preschoolers, while promoting intercultural acceptance by providing the opportunity to be exposed to music from different cultures and engage in the joint activity using such music. For the purpose of investigate the applicability of the developed program, the program was implemented with two groups of preschoolers and each group received the musical play program for 30 minutes twice a week for a total of 6 sessions. The results of this preliminary study indicate that the musical play program promoted interaction between peers from different cultural background. Based on the results of this study, musical play programs may be helpful in promoting interactions between preschoolers from different cultural backgrounds and increase of acceptance of immigrant students in Korean daycares and schools.

  • SBS [Healing Camp] seems like having a different sound usage from other entertainment programs. After content analysis, I found that [Healing Camp] uses much more music & sound effects than [Muhandojeon]. Music & sound effects of [Healing Camp] has functions of tautological informing, uplush of emotion or Ancrage, narrating or Relais. It is very similar to television subtitle. Positive uses of music & sound effects are expected to catch the attention of audience and to increase the ratings. But [Healing Camp] uses music & sound effects very positively and systematically and opens a new dimension of narratives.

  • Background music is presented simultaneously with target messages. The main content should be kept intact for some time to aid decision making process. The maintenance of this information requires auditory working memory. The temporal compression of background music may often adopted due to the limitation of the presentation time. In this study, auditory working memory and decision making proces were analyzed in terms of temporal compression ratios of the background music. A total of 37 subjects of early twenties joined the study. Selected products were categorized based on eigen values of multi-dimensional scaling. Four presentation conditions were cases with no background music, background music with no compression, background music with low compression, and background music high compression. Matched reponses were analyzed through repeated ANOVA. Results showed that the high involvement product required more working memory resources. However, the increased level of usage did not always lead to the corresponding changes in decision making process. This approach may be useful in analyzing the role of time compression and working memory in consumer behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the awareness of early childhood teachers for the development of early childhood education programs using background music. The subjects of this study were 272 early childhood teachers of kindergartens in Busan and Kyungnam provinces. The data were collected through questionnaires on the awareness of children's appreciation of fairy tales using background music. The collected data were analyzed by frequency and percentage using SPSS 18.0 program. The results of this study are as follows: First, the number of early childhood teachers who had experience of performing fairy tales using background music were less than half of them. Secondly, the purpose of appreciation of fairy tales using background music was to develop rich emotions. In order to understand the systematic knowledge and concept of background music, it was necessary to supply background music in various life styles. Third, development of a fairy tale appreciation program using background music was generally required. Third, development of a fairy tale appreciation program using background music was generally required. Fourth, a fairy tale appreciation program using background music is appropriate for the large group activity time of 10~20 minutes one or two times a week and it was necessary to have a concatenated structure of pre-activities, introduction methods, questioning techniques in development, finishing methods, evaluation methods, and extension activity methods.
