  • This experimental study aims at understanding the Korean subjects' phonemic awareness in the English minimal pairs. For the purpose of the experiment, English listening comprehension tests were designed using minimal pairs and conducted among subjects, and the results of the tests were analyzed with the help of spectrogram. From the results of this study, I could find out three important things: First, subjects have difficulty in understanding and distinguishing English vowel minimal pairs. Second, among the English vowel minimal pairs, they had much difficulty in distinguishing between /ə:/ and /ɔ:/. Third, subjects could recognize the semivowel /w/ in words without any difficulty. In addition to this, I tried to analyze the results using the spectrogram, which helps to educate students effectively.

  • In this paper, we implemented distributed neural network that recognizes phonemes by frame unit for the 30 Korean proverbs sentences consist of 106 isolated words. The features of speech were chosen as PLP cepstrums, energy and zero crossings, where we get those being used as inputs to the distributed neural networks in wide area for a frame to get the good temperal characteristics. A young man of twenties has produced 30 proverbs 5 times. The learning of neural network uses 4 sets of them. 1 set being unused remains for test. There exists silence between words for the easy discrimination. The ratio of frame recognition in large grouping neural network is $95.3\%$ when 4 sets were used for the learning.

  • This paper proposes LF-MMI (Lattice Free Maximum Mutual Information)-based acoustic modeling using external knowledge for speech recognition. Note that an external knowledge refers to text data other than training data used in acoustic model. LF-MMI, objective function for optimization of training DNN (Deep Neural Network), has high performances in discriminative training. In LF-MMI, a phoneme probability as prior probability is used for predicting posterior probability of the DNN-based acoustic model. We propose using external knowledges for training the prior probability model to improve acoustic model based on DNN. It is measured to relative improvement 14 % as compared with the conventional LF-MMI-based model.

  • To recognize continued speech, it is necessary to segment the connected acoustic signal into phonetic units, In this paper, as a parameter to detect transition regions in continued speech, we propose a new asymmetrical rate. The suggested rate represents a change rate of magnitude of speech signals. As comparing this rate with other rate in adjacent frame, the state of the frame can be distinguished between steady state and transient state.

  • This study investigated the psychological effects of using a serious game with young learners in the English classroom compared with those of a dictionary application. A tablet PC-based serious game was created for the training of English phoneme discrimination for Korean 6th graders, and its psychological effects were measured using a paper-based survey and face-to-face interviews. The overall results revealed that the serious game had more positive psychological effects on young learners than the dictionary app. These findings provide supporting empirical evidence for using serious games in English classrooms.
