  • This study has a purpose to analyze trajectories of life satisfaction of the elderly after their retirement and how the characteristics of individual, retirement and family relationship have an effect on the life satisfaction. This study has investigated the Korean elderly, who had been retired, using the data from three waves(1st wave(2005)~3rd wave(2009) of the Korean Retirement and Income Panel(KReIS). Data analysis has been used to identify the predictors of the intercept and slope related to the life satisfaction after retirement, focusing the trajectories of the life satisfaction after retirement and individual characteristics, retirement characteristics and family relationship with application of the growth curve model by Amos 20.0. First, the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement was somewhat below average. Life satisfaction averagely increased little by little from 1st wave to 3rd wave. Second, by conducting the conditional growth curve model, the study revealed that the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement is high on individual characteristics(sex, educational level, income, health status) and in retirement characteristics(voluntary retirement) and satisfaction with family relationship and married life). Furthermore, health status, voluntary retirement, and satisfaction with family relationship asserted the meaningful variables in the slope of life satisfaction after retirement.

  • This research defined causal relationships among the perception of retirement and senior life(PRSL), retirement preparation actions(RPA), and retirement satisfaction level(RSL) to know the expectation about retired life according to the differences of retirement related factors, PRSL, and RPA. For this, From November 2015 to February 2016, I researched from 20 to 69, 1,500 currently working adults in the country, mailing surveys with the letter introducing this research's purpose and procedure and having them send them back, or researcher's spreading and collecting the surveys, eliminating 83 cases of negligent answers, finally analyzing 1,417 surveys. The result shows age, monthly income, and residing at their own places made more positive PRSL, RPA, financial retirement preparation level(FRPL), and expectancy about satisfactory retirement life. When they had less children, PRSL and RSL were higher. When they had more children, RPA was more proactive, and FRPL was higher. When they had positive PRSL, RPA was more proactive, and expectancy about retired life was higher. This research is significant in defining differences of retirement related factors and causal relationships among PRSL, RPA, and RSL.

  • This study analyzed plans for retirement by focusing on preferred retirement timing(PRT) measure. Current pension program show rather strong guideline about the timing of full-retirement. This study asked whether the middle age group are willing to retire correspond to the policy guidelines or not. Research sample came from 2008 KLOSA data, recruiting 1,367 workers who are residing in cities or in metropolitan area (women: 34.8%). I have analyzed one item question asking "In what age do you want to fully retire?", The results showed that, about two third of respondents declared they do not want to retire unless they have health problems, or would expect to retire no earlier than age 70. However, a third of respondents expected normal retirement coming between 60~64. Second, the determinants of timing for retirement were differ by PRT. Social determinants, such as gender, short work hours, being employed, and higher status in family income were associated with early PRT. While, good health status, positive view on the future economics were highly associated with late PRT. The results reveal that the timing of retirement is getting more diverse and obscure in the individual level.

We utilized 2008~2012 'Longitudinal study of ageing' and selected 1,569 retirees above 45 years old as a final subject. This study used STATA 12.0 program for analysing frequency and descriptive statistic. At first, we analyzed personal characteristics and affecting factor on social network of retirees through Panel logit model and fixed effects regression model. Second, we applied multiple panel logit model and fixed effects model to learn factor affecting employment and social network changes. We found that a number of social activities affects social network in the structure feature and support from sons and daughters also influences social network in the functional feature after retirement.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of retirement stress, character strengths and marital dissatisfaction on depression. Additionally this study examined direct effects and indirect effects of character strengths and marital dissatisfaction. The participant group was composed of 197 retired men living in Daegu and Gyongsangbuk-do. The Retirement Stress Scale (RSS), Character Strengths Test (CST), Korean Marital Satisfaction Inventory (K-MSI), and Center for Epistemology Studies Depression scale (CES-D) were administered to participants. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS was used for the purpose of analysis. The results of the study were as follows. First, an increase in retirement stress was associated with higher levels of depression. Second, hierarchical regression analysis indicated that higher levels of optimism significantly predicted higher depression. Also hierarchical regression analysis indicated that lower levels of appreciation of beauty and excellence without optimism significantly predicted higher depression. Furthermore, increases in marital dissatisfaction were associated with higher levels of depression. Third, the constructed model including both direct effects and indirect effects appeared to fit better than alternative model in explaining relationships between retirement stress and depression. In other words, character strengths and marital dissatisfaction appeared to affect the depression levels of retired men directly and indirectly. To sum up, this study demonstrated that the factors which had an effect on depression in retired men, character strengths and harmonious marital relationships appeared to act as a buffer against depression in retired men. The current results might serve as basic data for psychological well-being programs for retired men. Finally, the limitations and implications of the current study were discussed.

  • This study was conducted to review the mediating effects of retirement preparation in how the degree of requirements for retirement education and the degree of preparation for retirement education affects quality of life, and how the degree of participation in retirement education which is a moderating variable is moderated. The study findings show that first, in terms of the difference in quality of life across different general characteristics, those who live in a city rather than a Gun, those who had received education of graduate school or higher rather than those with an education of undergraduate university programs or lower, those who were public officers or employees of corporations rather than those who were self-employed had a higher quality of life. The group satisfied with their economic status and health status were found to be more satisfied with their quality of life. Second, a correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between retirement preparation, quality of life, and degree of requirements for retirement preparation. Moreover, there was also a positive correlation between quality of life, retirement education and the degree of requirements for retirement education. There was a positive correlation between retirement education and the degree of requirements for retirement preparation. Third, participation in retirement education moderated the indirect effect that the degree of preparation for retirement education affected quality of life through the degree of retirement preparation. In other words, the degree of requirements for retirement education affects retirement preparation and affects quality of life through the indirect effects of retirement education. As such, the moderated mediating effects of retirement education on retirement preparation was found to be greater. This indicates that quality of life may also vary in accordance with the requirements for retirement education.

  • The current study examines whether retirement changes health behaviors and how the effect differs by reasons for retirement. This study conducts fixed-effects logistic regression analyses, using data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) over the period 2006 through 2014. Results indicates that retirees are more likely to participate in regular exercise compared to their employed counterparts. Retirement is positively associated with participation in regular exercise regardless of reasons for retirement. The odds of being engaged in smoking among retirees are 50% less relative to those for employees. However, analyses by reasons for retirement reveal that only participants who retired for health problems or reaching retirement age are less likely to smoke cigarettes compared to employed participants. Retirees show significantly lower odds in drinking compared to employees. Yet, further analyses present that only individuals who retired due to health problems are less likely to drink alcohol. Overall, these results suggest that retirement may provide opportunities for positive changes in health behaviors. The present study imply that individuals who retired due to health problems benefits most from retirement in terms of health behaviors compared to retirees who retired for other reasons.
