  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the elementary students' environmentally friendly attitude and environment literacy through Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats in science class. The objects of this study were the sixth grade of both an experimental class (25 students) and a comparative class (24 students) a the S elementary school science class located in Incheon city. The results of this study were as follows: First, the change of environmentally friendly attitude in the experimental group applying the six thinking hats program have statistically meaningful differences (p<.05). Second, the environmental literacy of the experimental group was improved somewhat, but it has no meaningful differences compared the other group statistically. Therefore, the six thinking hats program applied in this study might be useful to improve the students' environmentally friendly attitude in elementary school science class.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop online synchronous discussion tool based on De Bono's six thinking hats and to investigate availability and improvements of the tool. Analysis of previous studies about synchronous online discussion and six thinking hats and development of design strategies from 3C model, communication, coordination, cooperation, were done. Six thinking hats online synchronous discussion tool was developed and applied four times for 5 weeks in the 'fundamentals of computer science' course of college students majored in computer science. Qualitative data from open-ended survey and reflection paper of students, and field note of participant researchers were analyzed. As a result, six thinking hats online synchronous discussion tool facilitated student's interaction and communication in the aspect of communication, coordination, and cooperation of 3C model. However, some improvements are needed to overcome the limits of text-based online communication and to use six thinking hats online synchronous discussion tool as a tool to promote structured interaction and communication.

  • Edward de Bono's six thinking hats is effective to increase the excellence of the thinking and cultivate divergent thinking. In particular, this method is effective in finding a reasonable solution through analyzing issue from a variety of perspective. In this paper, we developed the system for an effective debate learning that student's own ideas based on six thinking hats are shared and expressed in speech and images through Android devices sensors. We analyzed the tools and guidelines by making design structural model for system design. The developed system was evaluated by the teacher through demonstration and practice and we analyzed through evaluation results the effectiveness and the improvement of the system. The evaluation results were analysed that the developed system is more effective improve motivation and debate ability than web based debate learning system.

  • This study developed an SSI (Socio-Scientific Issue) discussion program that applies a creative technique called six thinking hats, and then investigated the differences in argumentation patterns and effects on the decision-making abilities of each character feature of students between SNS debate and existing face to face debate. There were three SSI themes - Designer Babies, embryonic stem cell study, and legitimacy of abortion. Students were divided into two groups, the debate group using SNS and face to face debate group. The character patterns of students were divided to 'extraversion,' 'agreeableness,' and 'conscientiousness' through test sheets for character features for each student. Both groups were educated for creative discussion methods using six thinking hats and then, the class progressed. As a result of analyzing argumentation patterns used in SNS debate and face to face debate, the most used argumentation pattern was the "cause pattern." But comparing to face to face debate, other patterns (mark, inference, authority, motive) were also used in SNS debate. The study analyzed three factors of decision-making ability for each character feature of students such as complexity, perspectives, and inquiry. As a result, for 'complexity' factor, there was a significant difference between SNS debate group and face to face debate group only in the student group of Agreeableness. For 'perspectives' factor, there were significant differences between SNS debate group and face to face debate group in all three characters. Finally, for inquiry, there were no significant differences between SNS debate group and face to face debate group in all three characters. Accordingly it would be necessary to apply SNS debate using the six thinking hats in SSI education to enhance perspectives.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an integrated program to improve the creative and emotional ability of lower grade students. This program aimed to cultivate creative thinking and creative personality for problem solving, and to learn how to interact positively with others by developing emotional expression and control. Creative thinking ability includes fluency, flexibility, originality, elaboration, imagination, and sensitivity. Creative personality includes curiosity, sensitivity, adventure, humor, independence, task commitment, and problem solving leadership. We selected 6 creative thinking skills such as mind-map and brainstorming. Emotional factors consist of self /other understanding, control of emotional effect, self-expression emotionally, and respect for others for cooperation. The integrated program consisted of 12 themes, and the class time was set to 40 minutes, which is the same as the elementary curriculum. The program was conducted by a teacher with 10 years' experience.
