Organic farming is a type of agricultural practices based on naturally occurring processes excluding or strictly limiting the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals. This study was conducted to investigate the influences of agro-based materials, effective microorganisms (EM), liquid silicate (LS), and organic liquid fertilizer (OLF) for water dropwort (Oenanthe stolonifera DC.) cultivation. Soil pH, soil organic matter, and plant available phosphorous decreased with LS application. Exchangeable Ca and Mg decreased with EM application, and electrical conductivity and exchangeable Ca and K decreased with OLF application. Most of essential nutrient contents in water dropwort were reduced with the treatments of LS, EM, and OLF as compared with those in control plot, except nitrogen and phosphorus. However, diseases and insect pests were almost not observed in the water dropwort in the agro-based material application plots, except cluster caterpillar (Spodoptera litura). Productivity of water dropwort tended to be reduced: its higher productivity in the OLF and EM+LS plots and lower in the LS and control plots.
Various fractions of apple fibers such as crude pulp, total dietary fiber, soluble dietary fiber, and insoluble dietary fiber were prepared and added to the proteose peptone-yeast extract-fildes (PYF) media to see their effects on the growth of type cultures of intestinal bacteria. Most microbes tested in this experiment grew well in PYF media with the soluble dietary fiber of apple than with the insoluble dietary fiber. Especially Bifidobacterium species such as B. adolescentis, B. animalis, B. infantis, B. longum, B. thermophilum showed higher growth in PYF media containing the soluble dietary fiber than other fiber fractions. However, pectin-added media didn't promote the growth of most microbes used in the experiment. In the in vitro mixed culture using rat feces as starter, the addition of the soluble dietary fiber or pectin to the basal medium showed larger proportion of Bifidobacterium species in total bacteria than that of glucose.
This study was conducted to check the applicability of pilot-scale co-composting for the remediation of diesel contaminated soil during the winter. Nutrients and microbes were added to enhance the efficiency of bioremediation and fermenting composts were also added to stimulate the microbial activities. As a result. the soil pile was kept at adequate temperature for the bioremediation during the test period of 30∼40 days and initial concentration(2,340mg TPH/kg dry soil) was reduced to 216mg TPH/kg dry soil (approximately 91% removal). During the initial 10∼30 days, it was found that the TPH concentration and the microbial population were rapidly reduced and increased. respectively. The co-composting technology studied can be effectively applied to remediate the diesel contaminated soil during the winter.
The fiffusion characteristics of substrate of varing biomass concentrations into and from Ca- alginate gel beads in well-stirred solutions were investigated. Ca-alginate gel beads were immobilized by Zymomonas mobilis or free from cells. The values of the diffusion coefficient of substrate were calculated by means of the method of Least squares and Random pore model. Reaction rates are expressed by the Michaelis-Menten type equation, and the results are compared with experimental data. Intraparticle effective diffusivity of substrate resistance on reaction by using immobilized Z.mobilis entrapped by Ca-alginated gel seemed to be restricted by cell density. The experimental data also indicated relationship between the effective diffusivity and the cell concentration used in the gel preparation.
In order to fine some proper bacterial food for Tigriopus japoncus, bacterial flora of the tide pool inhabited by the copepod has been isolated and tested as bacterial food. Food effect and optimum density of the bacteria in terms of survival rate of the copepod was measured in the larval and the adult stages. Among the 264 strains of isolated bacteria, Acinetobacter spp. Moraxella, spp., Flavobacterium spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were certified as effective food for the copepod. According to the experimental results, Acinetobacter spp. AG-3 was the most effective food for all the stages from nauplius to adult, while Moraxella spp. and Flavobacterium spp. were effective for copepodite stage, and Pseudomonas spp. for the adult stage only. The optimum density of bacteria for the food was about $10^6\;cell/ml$, which was the same average density of bacteria in the tide pool.

Several phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms were isolated in order to enhance the availability of insoluble phosphates accumulated in soils. Among the microorganisms, Aspergillus niger was selected and identified for this study. The phosphate-solubilizing activity. the phosphorus uptake by plants and the changes in soil microbial biomass by inoculation of Aspergillus niger were investigated. The uptake amounts of phosphorus by lettuce and pimiento were increased by inoculation of Aspergillus niger in all experimental treatments. There was negative correlation between the soil microbial biomass P and the soil phosphorus content. However the soil available phosphorus ($Y=-0.0007X^2+0.7126X^2-29.46$, $R=0.8283^{**}$) and the phosphorus absorption of plants ($Y=0.0049X^2-2.2352X+326.34$, $R=0.6350^*$) were significantly correlated to soil microbial biomass C on the positive section of quadric curve.
As a pary of investgation on effective accumulation of cadmium in yeast cells, effect of surfactant was studied on intracellular accumulation of cadmium in extremely cadmium-tolerant yeast, Hansenula anomala B-7. Cadmium accumulation was enhanced up to approximately 40% by the addition of non-ionic surfactant, Triton X-100 and its optimal concentration was found to be 0.1-0.2%. Furthermore, optimum conditions for intracellular accumulation of cadmium were at $40^{\circ}C$ and initial pH 6.0 for 48 hours under shaking culture.
Theoretical analysis reported in this paper is on the varities of the growth rate of Chlorella ellipsoidea due to the amount of available phosphorus for the purpose of the continual mass culture. Available phosphorus in the culture media of the Chlorella was also estimated at a limiting factor as this experiment. The equation between the concentration of Chlorella n and growth period t is $\frac{dn}{dt}=Kn$, and the functional relation between the Specific growth rate K and steady state period T is the following: $K=\frac{2.303}{T}$log\frac{n}{no}$ ($n_o$=initial concentration).
