  • Shrinkage strains of concrete slab in multi-story building are restrained by structural members such as columns or walls, then can induce cracks due to excessive shrinkage stress over tensile strength of member. In this study, a shrinkage stress analysis method of concrete slab in multi-story building considering not only material properties such as shrinkage, creep and reinforcement effect but also construction sequence is proposed. Tensile stresses of slab due to shrinkage are calculated by converting shrinkage strains into equivalent temperature gradients, creep that can release shrinkage stress can be considered by replacing the modulus of elasticity of concrete, Ec , to the effective secant modulus of elasticity of concrete, E$\_$eff/ Reinforcements are also considered by modeling them as equivalent beam elements in FEM program. Results of step by step analysis reflecting construction sequence summed up to calculate stresses of the whole building considering that shrinkage stresses of the building come from the difference of shrinkage between i-th floor and (i-1)-th floor, named as effecitive shrinkage, and it can be varied by construction sequence. The results of 10-story example building show that shrinkage stresses of lower floors are greater than those of upper floors, that is, stresses of lower floors(1∼2FI.) exceed modulus of rupture of concrete, but stress ratios of higher floors are in the range of 27.9∼92.8%.

  • Deflections due to shrinkage are frequently ignored in design calculation. Especially for thin member, shrinkage often causes considerable deformations as wellas appreciable stress changes. Several methods for computing shringkage curvature have been proposed by many researchers. Some of the approximte methods widely used in the recent years are the equivalent tensile force method, Miller's method and Branson's method. These methods were, however, somewhat oversimplified and could be too conservative in the case of well cured concrete structure. In this paper, an approximate method for computing shrinkage curvature and deflection is proposed. Curvature due to shrinkage is derived from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of a section and the age-adjusted effective modulus method. The proposed method is verified by comparison with several experimental measurements. The correlations between calculated and measured curvatures is very good.

  • In this study, recently it is urgently required that demolition waste concrete has to be recycled on the construction because urban development is accelerated and redevelopment project is rapidly expanded, production quantity of construction and demolition waste concrete is being increased. As a results of drying shrinkage test under restrained and unrestrained condition, although workability and mechanical properites of concrete using HQRS were similar to that of concrete using natural sand, there were a great difference in deformation characteristic of dry shrinkage according to replacement ratio of HQRS. And, it makes sure that use of HQRS instead of partial nature sand was effective because drying shrinkage of concrete using 30 volume percentage of HQRS was smaller than that using only natural sand. Therefore, it is the objective of this study to provide the fundamental data about the re-application as an analysis of the drying shrinkage characteristics of concrete using HQRS and it is able to creta a high value-added by using HQRS.

  • The age-adjusted effective modulus method has been known to provide more precise assessment than the traditional Yassumi method for long-term behavior estimation of prestressed composite girders. The age-adjusted effective modulus method, however, involves complicated calculation, thereby making the Yassumi method more prevalent in actual design. This study presents rational approaches to revise creep coefficients for the Yassumi method by using parametric study results obtained from the age-adjusted effective modulus method.

  • An analytical approach to calculate time-dependent stresses and strains in initially cracked reinforced concrete section with biaxial bending was proposed. The method utilized the aging coefficient approach of Bazant and the linear creep theory. The position of neutral axis and strain and stress distributions of cracked section after creep and shrinkage were determined from the requirements of strain compatibility and equilibrium of a section. With this proposed algorithm, examples were given for rectangular section and a comparative analysis for stress and strain was also made.

  • This study investigates the effect of the absorbent materials on the material properties(compressive strength and drying shrinkage) of natural hwangtoh mortar which is one of the traditional building material in Korea. The absorbent materials used are seaweed paste and Super-Absorbent Polymer(SAP). In addition to the absorbent materials, the initial sealed curing recommended by the standard specification of properties for Korean traditional building materials is also a main interest of this study. Based on the test results of 28 days compressive strength and converged drying shrinkage, it is confirmed that the initial sealed curing for 7 days is effective to reduce the drying shrinkage and to enhance the compressive strength. Thus, it is verified that the recommendation is reasonable and has positive effects on the properties of the mortar. Next, the test results show that the addition of absorbent materials into the mortar is also effective to the two properties depending on their absorption capacity. Thus, it is more effective to use SAP than the seaweed paste because of higher absorption capacity. However, both the initial sealed curing and keeping total water contents of the mortar are required to show this effectiveness. Lastly, the compressive strength is inversely proportional to the drying shrinkage. By using this relation, the reason of the increase of compressive strength due to the initial sealed curing or the addition of absorbent materials is quantitatively explained.

  • An incremental approach to predict the time dependent flexural behavior of composite girder is presented in the framework of incremental finite element method. Age dependent nature of creep, shrinkage, and maturing of elastic modulus of concrete is prescribed in the incremental tangent description of constitutive relation derived based on the first order Taylor series expansion applying to the total from of stress-strain relation. The loop phenomenon in which age dependent nature of concrete causes stress redistribution and it causes creep in turn is taken into account in the formulation through the incremental representation of constitutive relation. The developed algorithm predicts the time dependent deflections of 4.8m long two span double composite box girder subjected to shrinkage, maturing of elastic modulus, and creep initially induced by self weight. Comparison shows a good agreement between the predicted and measured results.

  • In this study, the replacement effects of cementitious materials (fly ash, blast furnace slag, and blended mixtures) were assessed for normal strength concrete with very low shrinkage properties under $350{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ strain using a powder type shrinkage reducing agent. In addition, through mock-up tests of actual size walls restrained with four sides, the shrinkage characteristics using the power type shrinkage reducing agent were measured and the crack reducing ability was assessed. The slump and air contents were measured as the properties of fresh concrete, and the length changes of the prismatic specimens, $100{\times}100{\times}400mm$ in size, were measured for the shrinkage characteristics. To reduce the shrinkage of concrete, the maximum replacing ratio of the fly ash is effective to 20 percent; however, the use of blast furnace slag and ternary mixtures did not reduce the shrinkage.

  • Shrinkage is one of typical characteristics of concrete with cement paste and aggregates. A lot of studies on this has been conducted with an assumption that the concrete is a homogeneous material. However, as shrinkage acts on only one of the components that consist of concrete, it is hard to be characterized only by the average effective properties. Therefore, in this paper, the concrete shrinkage, which is one of the typical characteristics and still has a lot of uncertainty, is simulated considering its heterogeneous properties. Using a meso model, concrete is modeled with the combination of mortar and aggregates, and the shrinkage is simulated by applying the shrinkage strain on the mortar only. According to the results, it is shown that the cracking of shrinking concrete is largely influenced by the types of aggregates and the degree of restraint. Also, the shrinkage cracking cannot be represented only by the single values such as tensile strength since the stiffness of aggregates and the degree of restraint influence the cracking.
