A turbine wheel undergoes high heat flux and centrifugal force when a gas turbine starts. The temperature and stress of the turbine wheel increase rapidly, and the time point and rate of them may not coincident. The difference of heating and rotating rates influences the life of turbine wheel. We conducted thermo-mechanical fatigue analysis with finite element methods to study the influence. The low acceleration and deceleration of the wheel extends the life. If the turbine wheel decelerate faster than cooling, the life increases.

The crack that occurs on the wheels of railroad cars can be categorized into a surface crack that starts from the surface or a subsurface crack that starts from the inside and can be detrimental to safe railroad operations. Therefore, estimating the growth life span of this type of crack is very important. In this research, the stress distributions, displacements, and the growth-life spans of both surface cracks and subsurface cracks have been studied. By using the finite element analysis, especially in the life span prediction process, the stress conditions and the stress intensity factors of the crack tip have been discovered. The Paris formula has been used to analyze the growth-life span prediction.

In this study, the 4-point bending test has been performed in order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strength of as-welded specimens has been satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of domestics and AASHTO & JSSC, and fatigue strength at $2{\times}106cycles$ of TIG-dressing specimens has been increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks have been occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes are low, and grown as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has been closely related to the flank angel and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has been largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

In this paper, the technique to reinforce the structure using the sensitivity information is proposed. Design variables related to the geometry of structure at fatigue fracture points are determined and sensitivities of fatigue life at fracture points with respect to the variation of design variables are calculated. Then the vector composed of gaps between the target life and initial life cycles at fracture points is calculated. The linear algebraic equation to solve the variation of design variables is composed. From the equation, the design variables for reinforced structure are determined.

In this study, finite element analysis was performed to evaluate a method of increasing the fatigue life of the pipe connection structure commonly used in the topside structure of offshore platforms. MSC Patran/Nastran, a commercial analysis program, was used, and the critical structural model was selected from the global analysis. To realize the stress concentration phenomenon according to the load, modeling using 8-node solid elements was implemented. The main loads were considered to be two lateral loads and a tensile load on a diagonal pipe. To check the hotspot stress at the main location, a 0.01 mm dummy shell element was applied. After calculating the main stress at the 0.5-t and 1.5-t locations, the stress generated in the weld was estimated through extrapolation. In some sections, this stress was observed to be below the fatigue life that should be satisfied, and reinforcement was required. For reinforcement, a bracket was added to reduce the stress concentration factor where the fatigue life was insufficient without changing the thickness or diameter of the previously designed pipe. Regarding the tensile load, the stress in the bracket toe increased by 23 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was a problem, decreased by approximately 8 %. Regarding the flexural load, the stress at the bracket toe increased by 3 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was also a problem, decreased by approximately 48 %. Owing to the new bracket reinforcement, the stress in the bracket toe increased, but the S-N curve itself was better than that of the pipe joint, so it was not a significant problem. The improvement method of fatigue life is expected to be useful; it can efficiently increase the fatigue life while minimizing changes to the initial design.

High pressure components of a gas turbine engine must operate for a long life under severe conditions in order to maximize the performance and minimize the maintenance cost. Enhanced cooling design, thermal barrier coating techniques, and nickel-base superalloys have been applied for overcoming them and furthermore, material modeling, finite element analysis, statistical techniques, and etc. in design stage have been utilized widely. This article aims to evaluate the effects on the low cycle fatigue life of the high pressure turbine nozzle caused by different turbine inlet temperature profiles and installation conditions and to investigate the most favorable operating condition to the turbine nozzle. To achieve it, the structural analysis, which utilized the results of conjugate heat transfer analysis as loading boundary conditions, was performed and its results were the input for the assessment of low cycle fatigue life at several critical zones.
The objective of this study is to examine fatigue behavior of as-welded butt-welded joints with incomplete penetration from fatigue tests. The test results are the following. In static tests, tensile strength and yield strength of butt-welded joints are constant regardless of incomplete penetration. And in fatigue tests, fatigue strength of fully penetrated butt-welded joints satisfies fatigue limits, prescribed in Korean Specifications and JSSC, respectively. The results show that as the magnitude of incomplete penetration increases, fatigue strength decreases. In fractured surfaces, full and incomplete penetration specimen show different shapes, it is because that stress concentration factor vary with structural geometry in bead toe and root tip, and certify in FEM analysis. This study suggests that defects such as incomplete penetration from welding must be avoided in order to attain the sufficient life of steel structures.

Stainless steel sheets are widely used as structural materials for the manufacture of railroad cars and commercial vehicles. These kinds structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For the fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet joints and plug joints, it is necessary to obtain information on the stress distribution at the weldment and the fatigue strength of the gas welded joints. Moreover the influence of the geometrical parameters corresponding to the gas welded joints on the stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained from the data recorded in fatigue tests. Using these results, the ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged according the relation between $\Delta\sigma-N_f$ and the maximum stress at the edge of the fillet welded joint.

Data which gathered and used in the field of fatigue and fracture mechanics have a lot of uncertainties. In this case, those uncertainties will make scatter band in evaluation of fatigue life and fracture toughness. Thus, the probabilistic analysis of these data will be needed. For determining the fatigue life in mixed mode, using crack direction law and fatigue crack growth law, the problem is studied as a constrained life minimization. Stress intensity factor(SIF) is computed by approximate solution table(Ewalds/Wanhill 1984) and 0th order PFEM. The variance of fatigue life and SIF are computed by differentiation of tabulated approximate solution and 1st order PFEM. And these are used for criterion of design values, principal parameter determination and modelling. The problem of center cracked plate is solved for checking the PFEM model which is influenced by various parameters like as initial crack length, final crack length, two fatigue parameters in Paris Equation and applied stress.
