  • A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment-curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into consideration the bond-slip effect by using monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. The modification of the moment-curvature relation to reflect the fixed-end rotation and pinching effect is also introduced. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

  • Estimation of vertical bearing capacity is critical in the design of bucket foundation used to support offshore structure. Empirical formula and closed form solutions for bucket foundations in uniform sand or clay profiles have been extensively studied. However, the vertical bearing capacity of bucket foundations in alternating layers of sand overlying clay is not well defined. We performed a series of two-dimensional axisymmetric finite element analyses on bucket foundations in sand overlying clay soil, using elasto-plastic soil model. The load transfer mechanism is investigated for various conditions. Performing the parametric study for the friction angles, undrained shear strengths, thickness of sand layer, and aspect ratios of foundation, we present the predictive charts for determining the vertical bearing capacities of bucket foundations in sand overlying clay layer. In addition, after comparing with the finite element analysis results, it is found that linear interpolation between the design charts give acceptable values in these ranges of parameters.

  • We propose a new measuring technique based on optical low-coherence reflectometry that enables us to determine the refractive index and the geometrical thickness of a transparent sample by one-time scanning only. By passing a collimated beam having a finite size through the edge of the sample, the refractive index and the geometrical thickness can be determined simultaneously from the comparison of interferograms generated by two kinds of reflected beams. In this study, a refractive index could be determined with the accuracy of $10^{-3}$, and its accuracy would be enhanced by using a more precise translator and a thicker sample.

  • The fiber-reinforced composite materials have been advanced for various applications because of their excellent mechanical and electromagnetic properties. On their manufacturing processes, however, thermo-curing inherently produces the undesired thermal deformation mainly from temperature drop from the process temperature to the room temperature, so called spring-back. The spring-back must be understood especially in the hybrid composites in order to design and fabricate desired shape. In this research, (glass fiber / epoxy) + (carbon fiber / epoxy) unsymmetric hybrid composites were fabricated under various conditions such as cure cycle, laminate thickness, stacking sequence and curing sequence. Coupons were made and spring-back were measured using coordinate measuring machine (CMM). Using the Classical Lamination Theory (CLT) and finite element analysis (ANSYS), the behavior of spring-back were predicted and compared with the experimental data. The results from CLT and FEA agreed well with the experimental data. Although, the spring-back could be reduced by lowering curing temperature, at any case, the spring-back could not be removed completely.

  • This paper presents results from the theoretical analysis of the lateral load distribution for a railway bridge designed with PSC girders which is one of most popular types of bridge in Korea. Typically, 3 sets of intermediate cross beams within a span have been installed for lateral load distribution. In this paper, the effect on the lateral load distribution by the number of intermediate cross beams were examined by both simple grillage analysis and finite element method. This study showed that at least, one set of cross beams at midspan should be needed to ensure the proper load distribution. However, the effect of cross beams on the load distribution becomes not significant though more than one set of cross beams are installed. Therefore, only one set of cross beans at midspan is recommended for constructibility and economic efficiency.

  • The existing concrete beams can be retrofitted or reinforced by attaching carbon fiber or glass fiber sheet beneath the beams. Although diverse design methods and application techniques of the retrofitting are studied and developed, the testing method of examining retrofitted beams have not been put into practice yet. In this study, a bond delamination has been modeled and studied to provide a basis for the development of actual testing equipments. For this purpose, Gaussian and sinusoidal waves with 3GHz and 5GHz center frequency are used as an incident wave and 1mm and 3mm bond delamination under the reinforcement are modeled. In the modeling, Finite Difference-Time Domain algorithm is used to investigate the behavior of electromagnetic waves in concrete. The results have shown that 5GHz waves are suitable for the detection of delamination.

  • When applying a system identification technique, which incorporates an experimental model to a corresponding finite element model of a structure, one of the major problems is the large difference in the numbers of degrees of freedom (dof) between the two models. While there are large number of dofs in a finite element model, the number of measurement points is practically limited. So it is very difficult to incorporate them. Especially rotational dofs are hard to measure. In this study a method is presented for estimating structural dynamic responses at unmeasurable locations in frequency domain. The proposed method is tested numerically and the feasibility for practical application has been demonstrated through an example structure under moving loads, where translational and rotational dofs of beam at a center point are estimated from the partial measurements of responses at accessible points.

  • This paper compares the characteristics of three different algorithms for three-dimensional (3D) magnetotelluric (MT) modeling. These methods are developed by Mackie et al. (1994), Sasaki (1999) and Nam et al. (2007). The first and second methods are based on the finite difference method (FDM), while the last one the finite-element method (FEM). MT responses, apparent resistivities and phases, for a COMMEMI 3D-2 model show a good agreement with integral equation solutions and only minor discrepancies are found over the anomalous bodies in the 3D model. The computation time of the two methods based on FDM is short and the static divergence correction contributes to speed up. The FEM modeling scheme is accurate but slow.

  • A half portion of Korean railway bridges depends on the type of steel plate girder bridge. Since these bridges have been built in the early stage of Korean economical boom, numerous maintenance effort suffers from aging and progressive degradation issues at present. In accordance with these efforts, this paper would like to address the detailed analyses of thin steel plates with bolts in order to simulate the connection regions of steel plate girder bridge. The fundamental modal analysis, transient dynamic analysis with 3D piezoelectric element in open circuit loop and signal process with aids of TOF(time of flight) and WC(wavelet coefficient) are extensively discussed.

  • From the perspective of commercializing rotating machines equipped with magnetic bearings, maintaining the error between the mechanical center and the magnetic center within an acceptable level is crucial. The existing method of measuring the center error is to adjust the position references that minimize the current imbalance present in levitation control outputs. However, this method can be applied only after all the components of the system are operational. In this paper, we present a new method of estimating the center error by using only the position sensors and a current source. A force model that relates the position of the rotor with the coil currents is set up. Using this model, the center error is estimated by minimizing the difference between the force angles and the contact angles measured in a pull test. The feasibility of the method is numerically and experimentally validated.
