The p-version of the finite element method is a new approach to finite element analysis in which the partition of the domain is held fixed while the degree p of approximating piecewise polynomials is increased. In this paper, the focus is on computer implementation of a new hierarchic p-convergence shell model based on blend mapping functions. Its rigid-body modes, round-off error, and convergence characteristics are investigated.

Finite element analysis is widely used to predict the structural stability and tooth contact performance of gears. This study focused on the effect of finite element modeling conditions of a spur gear on the simulation result and the model simplification. The gear body and teeth, teeth width, configuration of mesh, frictional coefficient, and simulation time interval (gear mesh cycle division) were selected for model simplification for gear analysis. The static transmission error during a single-gear mesh cycle was calculated to represent the performance of the gear, and the elapsed time was measured as a simplification factor. Contact stress distribution was also checked. The differences in maximum transmission error and elapsed time depending on the model simplification methods were analyzed. After all simplification methods were estimated, an optimal combination of the methods was defined, and the result was compared with that of the most detailed modeling methods.
The vehicle structure of Automated People Mover(APM) made of aluminum honeycomb sandwich with WR580INF4000 glass-fabric epoxy laminate facesheets was evaluated by structural test and finite element analysis. The test of the vehicle structure was conducted according to JIS E 7105. The structural integrity of vehicle structure was evaluated by stress, deflection and natural frequency obtained from dial-gauge and acceleration sensor. And the proposed finite element models were compared with the results of structural test. The results of finite element analysis showed good agreement with those of structural test. Also, in order to improve the stiffness of vehicle structure, the modified underframe model with reinforced side sill was proposed in design stage. The composite vehicle structures with modified underframe model had the improved structural stiffness about 44%.

This paper describes the standardized finite element model for carbody structures of railway vehicle made of sandwich composites. Recently, sandwich composites were widely used to railway vehicle due to the improvement of energy efficiency, high specific stiffness and strength, weight reduction and space saving in korea. Therefore, structural integrity should be verified using finite element analysis prior to the manufacture of composite railway vehicle. The standardized finite element model for composite carbody structures was introduced through comparing the results of real structural test under vertical, compressive, twisting load and natural frequency test of various railway vehicles in this study. The results show that the quadratic shell element is suitable to model the reinforced metal frame used to improve the flexural stiffness of sandwich panel compared to beam element, and layered shell and solid element are recommended to model the skin and honeycomb core of sandwich panel compared to sandwich shell element. Also, the proposed standard finite element model has the merit of being applied to crashworthiness problem without modifications of finite element model.
The high precision analysis by the p-version of the finite element method are fairly well established as highly efficient method for linear elastic problems, especially in the presence of stress singularity. It has been noted that the merits of the p-version are accuracy, modeling simplicity, robustness, and savings in user's and CPU time. However, little has been done to exploit their benefits in elasto-plastic analysis. In this paper, the p-version finite element model is proposed for the materially nonlinear analysis that is based on the incremental theory of plasticity using the constitutive equation for work-hardening materials, and the associated flow rule. To obtain the solution of nonlinear equation, the Newton-Raphson method and initial stiffness method, etc are used. Several numerical examples are tested with the help of the square plates with cutout, the thick-walled cylinder under internal pressure, and the circular plate with uniformly distributed load. Those results are compared with the theoretical solutions and the numerical solutions of ADINA
The problem on cyclic plate load tests was analyzed by finite element method using an anisotropic hardening constitutive model. The constitutive model was coded to user subroutine in ABAQUS. Using the result of the analysis, Young's moduli corresponding to various strain levels were evaluated by a back calculation method and were very similar to those of input. On the basis of the back calculation method plate loading tests were verified. As a result, deformation moduli could be evaluated practically from cyclic plate load tests with respect site conditions.
The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of rotating orthotropic axes model in analyzing reinforced concrete planar members under cyclic as well as monotonic loading. The structural members to be addressed are moderately reinforced beams, columns, beam-column joints, and shear walls, whose failure occurs due to compressive crushing after extensive crack propagation, The rotating orthotropic axes model which is usually used for monotonic loading is developed for cyclic loading. With the existing cyclic material models of reinforcing steel and bond-slip, this material model is used for the finite element analysis. For monotonic loading, the analytical results of the rotating orthotropic axes model are compared with reinforced concrete beams which have brittle failure. For Shear wall members under cyclic loading, the analyses are compared with the experiments for the ultimate load capacity, nonlinear deformation, and pinching effect due to crack opening and closing.
