The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to linear moment gradient and resulted in the development of design equations. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered for the analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

The natural frequencies of Al square plates with a brass inclusion were analyzed by the rule of mixtures. The rule of mixtures is the method to derive natural frequency mutiplying effective inplane wane speed and nondimensional frequency parameters. Numerical models were Al square plates with an inclusion with cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type, 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type and fully clamped edge type. In cantilever type plates, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type plates and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge plates with an inclusion, good agreement within 10% obtained from rule of mixtures' results and numerical analysis results within inclusion area ratio 1/9. It was found that the natural frequencies of the cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type plates with an inclusion decrease as the size of inclusion increases when inclusion is located center of plates. And when the density of inclusion is less than the plates, natural frequency of plates with an inclusion increases as the size of inclusion increases.
Conventionally, because evaluation methods of the bearing capacity for double steel pipe-concrete composite pile design have not been established, the conventional vertical bearing capacity equations for steel hollow pile are used. However, there are severe differences between the predictions from these equations, and the most conservative one among vertical bearing capacity predictions are conventionally adopted as a design value. Consequently, the current prediction method for vertical bearing capacity of composite pile prediction composite pile causes design reliability and economical feasibility to be low. This paper investigated mechanical behaviors of a new composite pile, with a cross-section composed of double steel pipes filled with concrete (DSCT), vertical bearing capacities were analyzed for several DSCT pile conditions. Axisymmetric finite element models for DSCT pile and surrounding ground were created and they were used to analyze effects on behaviors of DSCT pile pile by embedding depth, stiffness of plugging material at pile tip, height of plugging material at pile tip, and rockbed material. Additionally, results from conventional design prediction equations for vertical bearing capacity at steel hollow pile tip were compared with that from numerical results, and the use of the conventional equations for steel hollow pile was examined to apply to that for DSCT pile.
Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder which is characterized by a recurrence of entire or partial collapse of the pharyngeal airway during sleep. A given tidal volume must traverse the soft tissue tube structure of the upper airway, so the tendency for airway obstruction is influenced by the geometries of the duct and characteristics of the airflow in respect to fluid dynamics. Methods: Individualized 3D FEA models were reconstructed from pretreatment computerized tomogram images of three patients with obstructive sleep apnea. 3D computational fluid dynamics analysis was used to observe the effect of airway geometry on the flow velocity, negative pressure and pressure drop in the upper airway at an inspiration flow rate of 170, 200, and 230 ml/s per nostril. Results: In all 3 models, large airflow velocity and negative pressure were observed around the section of minimum area (SMA), the region which narrows around the velopharynx and oropharynx. The bigger the Out-A (outlet area)/ SMA-A (SMA area) ratio, the greater was the change in airflow velocity and negative pressure. Conclusions: Pressure drop meaning the difference between highest pressure at nostril and lowest pressure at SMA, is a good indicator for upper airway resistance which increased more as the airflow volume was increased.
Recently, resistivity surveys have been frequently carried out over the irregular terrain such as mountainous area. Such an irregular terrain itself can produce significant anomalies which may lead to misinterpretations. In this study, topographic effects in resistivity survey were studied using the physical scale modeling as well as the numerical one adopting finite element method. The scale modeling was conducted at a pond, so that we could avoid the edge effect, the inherent problem of the scale modeling conducted in a water tank in laboratory. The modeling experiments for two topographic features, a ridge and a valley with various slope angles, confirmed that the results by the two different modeling techniques coincide with each other fairly well for all the terrain models. These experiments adopting dipole-dipole array showed the distinctive terrain effects, such that a ridge produces a high apparent resistivity anomaly at the ridge center flanked by zones of lower apparent resistivity. On the other hand, a valley produces the opposite anomaly pattern, a central low flanked by highs. As the slope of a terrain model becomes steeper, the terrain-induced anomalies become stronger, and moreover, apparent resistivity can become even negative for the model with extremely high slope angle. All the modeling results led us to the conclusion that terrain effects should be included in the numerical modeling and/or the inversion process to interpret data acquired at the rugged terrain area.
Quantitative analysis for distribution of penetrating ultrasound in vivo is very important to determine the treatment region and method. In this paper, we constructed a simplified 2-D femoral region model that consists of skin-fat-muscle-bone layered system, and simulated the pressure distribution in the model in case of applying ultrasound using Finite Element Method(FEM). The ultrasound used in the simulation was assumed to be pulse wave and the pressure distribution was analyzed during only one period of pulse wave. In order to find the penetration depth, amplitude of pressure and sphere that ultrasound reaches in the model, we performed the simulation with varying the applied frequency, transducer size and amplitude of transducer's output. The result showed that applied frequency is inversely proportional to the penetration depth and amplitude of pressure but the amplitude of transducer's output is proportional to the amplitude of pressure in the model. Also, the sphere that ultrasound reaches was widened and the amplitude of pressure became larger as the transducer size became larger. This results were similar to that obtained from the previous model consisting of fat-muscle-bone layered system, but we observed that the pressure of ultrasound is decreased due to the decrements of pressure by the absorption coefficient of skin and the interference that depends on the reflection of ultrasound caused by the difference of acoustic impedance of skin and fat. Finally, we can infer that the model proposed in this study is closer to the realistic model than the previous ones. It shows that the results obtained from this study can be useful in designing the ultrasound treatment instrument or in setting up the treatment plan.
We designed a model composed a ring type magnet, a yoke, and a sensing coil buried in a projectile for calculating the muzzle velocity based on the voltage induced from sensing coil by simulation. The muzzle velocity was calculated from the master curve obtained through the voltage induced from sensing coil by simulation. The induced voltage increased with increasing the diameter of sensing coil. The projectile's velocity was proportional to the induced voltage when the sensing coil was buried in projectile. The projectile will be surely exploded at the target region by inputting the information of muzzle velocity variation corrected the diameter effect of induced voltage of sensing coil.

A modular fish-bone girder pier consists of one main girder system named as "Spine Girder". Therefore, this pier can be most affected by torsion as well as flexural bending. The design considerations of the fish-bone girder pier are proposed to assure the reasonable design in this study. In order to investigate the behavior characteristics, structural analysis F.E model is developed, and the verification of the developed model is performed by comparison with experimental data. From the investigation of the structural behavior, the vertical stiffener is required at the bottom of bone-beams to prevent the excessive local stress. Also, it is found that the normal stress of the flange and the shear stress of the web and flange are dominantly affected by the warping torsion and pure torsion, respectively.

For the tunnel pattern of PD-3, a numerical analysis using the FEM program, MrSoil, was conducted with given geotechnical properties of surrounding rockmasses to verify the analysis results by comparing with other programs. The analyzed domain was extended to the far enough distance from the excavation surface to avoid the restrained effect by the boundary condition, and the construction sequence was employed in the analysis as calculation steps to simulate the time dependent 3 dimentional behavior of surrounding ground due to tunneling. Maximum 35 mm of the tunnel crown settlement and about 13 mm of the surface settlement were computed and the amount of settlement may not give any structural damage on the concrete structures on the ground surface. The shotcrete stress of 84 kg/cm2 and the rockbolt axial force of 9 ton as a maximum are within the allowable limit. The plastic zone was restricted near the excavation surface, but forepoling around the crown may be required to prevent rock falling. It is believed that the tunnel is designed reasonablely from the economical and safety points of view.
Recently, there has been a string of negligent accidents for the retaining wall and slope. In order to measure the ground deformation for the MSE wall, the authors carried out the model test to assess behavioral characteristics of geogrid MSE walls in active failure state with different conditions of geogrid reinforcement. The models are built in the soil container box having dimension, 100 cm long, 90 cm height, and 10 cm wide. The reinforcement used in the model test is geogrid (polyvinyl chloride, PVC). Three geogrids are sized by $30cm{\times}60cm$, $30cm{\times}70cm$, $30cm{\times}80cm$ (width ${\times}$ length) respectively. In this study, the laboratory model tests represented for several conditions of the MSE wall, and then its results were compared to 2D FE analysis.
