  • In this paper, a safety valve was modeled by using 3-dimensional designing program, Solidsworks after it was dismantled and measured. And 3-dimensional finite element analysis code, ANSYS was used to FEM analysis. Stress, strain and deformation were obtained when some amount of pressure was applied to the safety valve through FEM analysis.

  • FEM analysis of cleaning machine was performed. A cleaning machine was designed and measured to develop a cleaning machine with highly improved performance and a real configuration. 3D modeling was conducted using the 3-D design program CATIA V5. In addition, FEM analysis was conducted on the modeled cleaning machine using the ANSYS finite element analysis program and the pressure changes in internal fluid flow were visualized. This result was applied to the new product development of cleaning machines.

  • A general-purpose program for automatic two-dimensional finite-element modelling with quadrilateral elements was developed in this research. The conventional looping method employed in the program was introduced with emphasis on a new splitting criterion and a splitting scheme developed for improving the method. Some application examples were given, which show versatility and applicability of the developed program.

  • The waveguide finite element (WFE) method is a useful numerical technique to investigate wave propagation along waveguide structures which have uniform cross-sections along the length direction ('x' direction). In the present paper, the vibration and radiated noise of the submerged pipe with fluid is investigated numerically by coupling waveguide finite elements and wavenumber boundary elements. The pipe and internal fluid are modelled with waveguide finite elements and the external fluid with wavenumber boundary elements which are fully coupled. In order to examine this model, the point mobility, dispersion curves and radiated power are calculated and compared for several different coupling conditions between the pipe and internal/external fluids.

  • In order to calculate 3-dimensional wavefield using finite-element method in frequency domain, we must factor so huge sparse impedance matrix. Because of difficulties of handling of this huge impedance matrix, 3-dimensional wave equation modeling is conducted mainly in time domain. In this study, we simulate the 3-D wavefield using finite-element method in Laplace domain by combining high-performance parallel finite-element solver and SWEET (Suppressed Wave Equation Estimation of Traveltime) algorithm which can calculate the traveltime and the amplitude. To verify this combination, we applied it to the SEG/EAGE 3D salt model in serial and parallel computing environments.

  • The sensor response of a piezoelectric transducer embedded in a fluid loaded structure is modeled using a hybrid numerical approach. The structure is excited by an obliquely incident acoustic wave. Finite element modeling in the structure and fluid surrounding the transducer region, is used and a plane wave representation is exploited to match the displacement field at the mathematical boundary. On this boundary, continuity of field derivatives is enforced by using a penalty factor and to further achieve transparency at the mathematical boundary, drilling degrees of freedom (d.o.f.) are introduced to ensure continuity of all derivatives. Numerical results are presented for the sensor response and it is found that the sensor at that location is not only non-intrusive but also sensitive to the characteristic of the structure.

  • The objective of this study is numerically analyzed the behavior characteristics of the magnetic fluid in a closed rectangular container using finite element method (FEM). The governing equations are solved with magnetization and Maxwell equations for consideration of rotating effect of the magnetite particle. Then the discretized equations are solved with boundary conditions of the velocity and temperature. The developed model is validated with the results of Davis (1983) and Fusegi et al. (1991) has a good agreement within 5.5 % and 2.7 %, respectively.

  • In this study, a new equivalent modeling technique of rollingstock for 1-D collision dynamics was proposed using crash analysis of 3-D finite element model in some detail. To obtain good simulation results of 1-D dynamic model, the force-deformation curves of crushable structures should be well modelled with crash analysis of 3-D finite element model. Up to now, the force-deformation curves of the crushable structures have been extracted from crash analyses of sectionally partitioned parts of the carbody, and integrated into 1-D dynamic model. However, the results of the 1-D model were not satisfactory in terms of crash accelerations. To improve this problem, the force-deformation curves of the crushable structures were extracted from collision analysis of a simplified train consist in this study. A comparative study applying the suggested technique shows in good agreements in simulation results between two models for KHST.

  • A finite element analysis was performed for new earth retention system with prestressed wales. A 3D finite element model was adopted in this study to investigate the behavior of the earth retention system with prestressed wales. A procedure of the 3D finite element modeling of this earth retention system was presented. The procedure included the modeling of soil, wall, strut, and members of prestressed wale system which consists of wale, support leg, and steel wires, and the interface modeling of soil-wall and wall-wale. The numerical predictions of lateral wall deflection, and axial load on the members of prestressed wale systems and struts were evaluated in comparison with the measurements obtained from field instruments. A sensitivity analysis was performed using the proposed 3D finite element model to investigate the behavior of new earth retention system on a wide range of prestress load conditions of steel wires. The lateral deflection of the wall and wale, the bending moment of the wale, and the lateral earth pressure distribution on the wall were computed. Implications of the results from this study were discussed.
