  • This paper presented the nonlinear behaviors of the single-layered lattice dome, which is widely used for the long-span structure system. The behaviors were analysed through the classical shell buckling theory as the single-layered lattice dome behaves like continum thin shell due to its geometric characteristics, and finite element analysis method using the software program Nastran. Shell buckling theory provides two types of buckling loads, the global- and member buckling, and finite element analysis provides the ultimate load of geometric nonlinear analysis as well as the buckling load of Eigen value solution. Two types of models for the lattice dome were analysed, that is rigid- and pin-jointed structure. Buckling load using the shell buckling theory for each type of lattice dome, governed by the minimum value of global buckling or member buckling load, resulted better estimation than the buckling load with Eigen value analysis. And it is useful to predict the buckling pattern, that is global buckling or member buckling.

  • Inelastic nonlinear behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower under wind loading is studied using a finite element program developed on a Cray Y-MP. Convergence studies for the elastic and inelastic analyses are performed using three mesh models. It is shown that the mesh convergence plays an important role in accurately predicting the inelastic behavior of a cooling tower. Even though the cooling tower resists the applied forces through membrane stresses, it is found that the bending stresses play an important role in the failure and behavior of the cooling tower. The present analysis gives a shape factor of 1.48, which indicates a significant redistribution of meridional stresses. It is further evidenced by the distribution of meridional reinforcement yielding which reaches up to $30^{\circ}$ from the windward meridian. The present practice of using elastic analysis for calculating the design stresses appears to be at least safe and conservative. A more comprehensive study should lead to conclusions that would allow use of a higher-than-one shape factor, thus requiring less meridional reinforcement than the present design method does.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear finite element analysis program NUCAS, which has been developed for assessment of ultimate pressure capacity and failure mode for nuclear containment building is described. Degenerated shell element with assumed strain method and low-order solid element with enhanced assumed strain method is adapted to microscopic material and elasto-plastic material model, respectively. Finally, the performance of the developed program is tested and demonstrated with several examples. From the numerical tests, the present results show a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.

  • In this study, a non-linear FEM model is presented to predict the static flexural performance of precast bridge decks with ribbed joint and is verified with previous experiment results through comparison. The several theory of material properties were applied to each mechanical properties in FEM model and FEM model's input variables were determined through experiment result and parametric study. The FEM results showed good accuracy in predicting the structural performance of the specimens and FEM model's average error rate was 5%. Also, each specimen's cracking aspect and failure mode can be predicted through FEM's plastic strain distribution. Thus, this FEM model can be used effectively for predicting the ultimate behavior and parametric study to development of design formula for joint.

  • The analysis concerns collapse behavior of framed vehicle models with the change of design parameters at the initial stage of conceptual design. Collapse analysis of a vehicle model with framed structures has been carried out using finite element limit analysis. The analysis makes sequential changes of design parameters from an initial model with frames of uniform section so as to stage then weak parts. As a result of those design changes, the collapse load of a model has been increased and the deflection toward a passenger room has been reduced. The results demonstrate the versatility of finite element limit analysis as a tool that confirms the safety of vehicle models.

  • In order to study ultimate flexure behavior of FRP-concrete composite structures which can replace reinforced concrete structures, ABAQUS, a general purpose analysis program, was utilized for numerical nonlinear analysis of structural performance and behavior characteristics of FRP-concrete composite beams. Explicit nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted and the numerical results were compared with previous experiments. Concrete damaged plasticity model was adopted as material properties of concrete and Euro code was used as compressive stress state. Nonlinear analysis was performed for four different types of FRP-concrete composite beams, and ultimate load and cracking pattern was compared and analyzed. The model suggested in this research was able to simulate ultimate load and cracking pattern properly, it is expected to be utilized in study of precise structural and behavioral characteristics of various FRP-concrete composite structures.

  • The ultimate bearing capacity of surface foundations on a sand layer overlying clay has been theoretically investigated. First, a review of previous studies on the bearing capacity problems for this type of foundation was performed and a discussion was presented concerning the practical application. Second, the kinematic approach of limit analysis was used to calculate the upper bound of the true ultimate bearing capacity. The kinematic solutions are upper bounds and their accuracy depends primarily on the nature of the assumed failure mechanism. This approach makes it convenient to create design charts, and it is possible to trace the influence of parameters. Third, the commercial finite element program ABAQUS was applied to obtain the ultimate bearing capacity based on the elasto-plastic theory. Results obtained from the kinematic approach were compared with those from the program ABAQUS and the limit equilibrium equations proposed by Yamaguchi, Meyerhof and Okamura et al. Finally, the validities of the results from the kinematic approach, the results from the program ABAQUS and the limit equilibrium equations were examined.

  • The design of anchorage zone in a post-tensioned member has been started from the evaluation of the ultimate resisting capacity as well as the maximum bursting stress developed, and a lot of design codes including AASHTO and PTI describe their design equations to determine the bearing strength of concrete at the anchorage zone. However, these equations usually give conservative results because their derivation is based on the simple anchorage with a wide bearing plate in the surface without any additional consideration for the load transfer mechanism through transverse ribs on the anchorage. To assess the influence of geometric parameters related to the transverse ribs on the resisting capacity of anchorage block, experiments and analysis are conducted. After verifying the validity of numerical model conducted through correlation studies between experimental and analytical results, parametric studies with changes in the transverse ribs are followed and design recommendations for the anchorage block are suggested from the numerical results obtained.

  • Ultimate flexural buckling strength of cylindrical steel shells for the wind turbine tower structure was investigated by applying the geometrically and materially nonlinear finite element method. The effects of initial imperfection, radius to thickness ratio, and type of steel on the ultimate flexural strength of cylindrical shell were analyzed. The flexural strengths of cylindrical shells obtained by FEA were compared with design flexural strengths specified in Eurocode 3 and AISI. The shell buckling modes recommended in DNV-RP-C202 and the out-of-roundness tolerance and welding induced imperfections specified in Eurocode 3 were used in the nonlinear FE analysis as initial geometrical imperfections. The radius to thickness ratios of cylindrical shell in the range of 60 to 210 were considered and shells are assumed to be made of SM520 or HSB800 steel.

  • Experiments and the parametric based on finite element model were conducted to investigate the behavior and strength of a gussettube connection concerned with eccentricity and selenderness ratio. Because of limitations in loading capacity the specimens were fabricated with 1/3 scale of full size. Of primary interest here are the ultimate strength of connections having eccentricity caused by lateral loads. As a result the effect of eccentricity on the buckling strength was examined and the validity of the finite element model adopted in this study was verified through comparing with test results.
