This study was conducted to evaluate the scouting methods for larva and adults of the alfalfa weevil, $Hypera$$postica$ Gyllenhal on Chinese milkvetch, $Astragalus$$sinicus$ L. in the field. Three sampling methods, shake-bucket, shake-picking, and a sweeping net were evaluated for collecting alfalfa weevil larvae. We found significant differences among scouting methods and date in all survey fields. Sweep-net sampling was less able to detect small larvae than large larvae, which were not detected until early April whereas the shake-bucket, and shake-picking methods efficiently collected larvae from middle March. A Pitfall trap with three different baits - no bait, kidney bean seeds and sprouting kidney beans were compared for collection efficiency of alfalfa weevil adults. Collection efficiencies were significantly different by bait(p<0.018). Traps baited with sprouting kidney beans were the most efficient for collecting the alfalfa weevil. The number of alfalfa weevil caught was not significantly different between kidney bean seed and no bait in the pitfall trap. Therefore, the shake-bucket method for larvae and a pitfall trap baited with sprouting kidney beans for adults are recommended for scouting of the alfalfa weevil in a Chinese milkvetch field.
Residual and biological effects of buprofezin(25% WP) on the larvae of the brown planthopper(BPH), Ni/aparvata /ugens SUlI, were studied by pot experiments. Residual lethal effects on the 2nd instar larvae lasted significantly long, and were higher with application rates. The rate of 17.50 g a.i./10a showed ca. 90% mortality even on 35 days after treatment (OAT). $RLT_{90}$ and $RLT_{50}$(residual lethal time that can show 90% and 50% mortality, respectively) with rates of 5.78-11.50 g a.i./lOa were 9.0-13.5, and 16.8-22.8 days, respectively. It was estimated that 13.00 and 4.44 g a.i./lOa were the rates of buprofezin which could show mortalities of 2nd instar BPH larvae above 95% and 50% until 15 OAT, respectively. The residual lethal effect of 7.00 g a.i./10a on the 1st instar BPH larvae was 100 % even on 17 OAT. $RLT_{50}$ was 32.5 days which was 15 days longer than $RLT_{50}$ for the 2nd instar larvae. Buprofezin with 7.0 g a.i./lOa showed 100% and 70% mortality for 1st-4th and 5th instar BPH larvae, respectively. Longevity of a female BPH which emerged from the 5th instar larvae treated by buprofezin was greatly reduced, and its fecundity was nearly zero.
An epidemiological survey was performed to know the infection status of oysters with Gwmnophclloides seoi metacercariae in 7 islands of the West Sea known as the habitat of paleartic oystercatchers . Hcemntopus ostralegus osculans, in Korea. The surveyed areas were Aphaedo (Shinan-gun. Chollanam-do) Jangiado, Sonyudo and Munyodo (Okdo-myon, Kunsan-shi, Chollabuk-do), Yubudo (Changhang-up, Sochon-gun Chungchongnam-do), and Polumdo and Chumoondo (Sodo-myon, Kangwha-gup, Inchon ski). The oysters collected from Aphaedo, the known endemic focus, were examined monthly from August 1995 to October 1996 for observation of any seasonal variation of the metacercarial density. The average metacercarial burden was 761-2,077 by month, but the seasonal variation of the metacercarial density was not obvious. A total of 54 metacercariae was detected in 63 oysters collected from Yubudo. Out of 30 oysters from Sonyudo, 25 (83.3%) were infected with 1-66 metacercariae (12.6 in average). All of 50 oysters (100%) from Munyodo were infected with 3-162 metacercariae (53.5 in average), Only 4 metacercariae were detected in 100 oysters from Chumoondo. However, no metacercariae were found in 55 oysters from .Tangjado and 50 oysters from Polumdo. From the above results, it was confirmed that G. seoi is still highly prevalent in oysters from Aphaedo, and several islands of the West Sea known as the habitats of paleartic oystercatchers are new endemic areas of this fluke.

Differences in larvicidal activity of complement and chemiluminescent response of phagocytes in carp (Cyprinus carpio), crucian carp (Carassius auratus) and false dace (Pseudorasbora parva) against excysted metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis were investigated. The prevalence of C. sinensis metacercariae of false daces caught at Nakdong river (NR) was 100%. However, no C. sinensis metacercariae were found in false daces, which were collected at a reservoir in Chinyoung (CY), crucian carps and carps. The sera of false dace, which were intensively infected with C. sinensis metacercariae, killed excysted metacercariae of C. sinensis more readily than that of carp. However, the serum obtained from C. sinensis metacercariae-free false dace showed the lowest larvicidal ability. The larvicidal ability of sera collected from each fish species completely disappeared when the complement was inactivated by heating. When supernatant of excysted metacercariae homogenate were added to phagocytes of each species, the chemiluminescent responses were significantly (p<0.05) diminished in false dace and carp. The inhibition ratio of chemiluminescent responses by the supernatant was 22.9% in false dace, 9.6% in crucian carp and 12.4% in carp.

The white-spotted flower chafer (Protaetia brevitarsis) larva is one of the insects widely-used for edible and medicinal purposes in Eastern Asia. As a result of increasing demand for P. brevitarsis, massrearing systems in domestic farms have become necessary. However, the mass-rearing of larvae under confined rearing conditions could provide conditions unsuitable for preventing entomopathogenic diseases. Metarhizium anisopliae is the strongest fatal entomopathogenic fungus against P. brevitarsis. For inhibition of M. anisopliae, we used a Rhus verniciflua Stokes extract that has antifungal components. We investigated the inhibitory effect of the R. verniciflua extract at 1%, 5%, and 10% concentrations. The results showed that a 1% R. verniciflua extract added to sawdust produced a significantly low P. brevitarsis mortality rate. Moreover, extract-treated groups were heavier and had a shorter larval period than those of the untreated group. Consequently, we suggest that using an R. verniciflua extract can reduce the P. brevitarsis fatality rate from entomopathogenic fungi (e.g. M. anisopliae), resulting in more effective mass-rearing systems for P. brevitarsis.
Larval survivorships, growth rates, developmental rates, and emergence rates of Cloeon dipterum were studied under four constant temperatures $(10^{\circ}C,\; 15^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C,\;and\;25^{\circ}C)$ in the laboratory. Larval mortalities were relatively higher during the initial one-week period, but those tend to be stabilized as the experiments proceed. Judging from the growth and develop-mental rates, estimated optimal temperature for larval growth and development lies between $20^{\circ}C\;and\;25^{\circ}C$. Estimated larval period for emergence is less than 100 days.

Apolipophorin-III (apoLp-III) was isolated and purified from the last larval hemolymph of Galleria mellonella by the KBr gradient ultracentrifugation and gel chromatography (Sephadex G-100). In this paper, we examined that apoLp-III is taken up into the last larval fat bodies in Galleria mellonella. The last larval fat body tissues were incubated at room temperature for 30 min with fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled apoLp-III (FITC-apoLp-III). Fluorescein microscopy and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) revealed that the last larval fat body tissues internalize FITC-apoLp-III. The results show that the apoLp-III is taken up by the last larval fat body.
The methanol extracts from 30 species of oriental medicinal plants belonging to 24 families were tested for their lhicidal and antifeeding activit~es against diamondback moth (Plutello xylostella L) and tobacco cutworn (Spodoptera litura F.) by a leaf-dipping method at a concentration of 5, 000 ppm. The methanol extract from Copti chinensis only showed a potent larvicidal activity against P xylostello. Strong antifeeding activity against P. xylostello was observed from the extmds from Platycodon grandiflorurn, Codonopsis pilosula, Asomm sieboldii, Rhus chinensis and Uthospermum erythrorhizon And a potent antifeeding activity against S. liturn was obtained from Akebia quinata and Equlsetum hyemale extracts. A significant antifeeding activity against both species was obtained from R chinensis and C. chinensis extracts.
A group of metacercariae encysted in the Resh of Mugil sp. were identified to be Stellantchasmus falcatus by the morphology o( adult worms obtained experimentally. It is confirmed that mullets serve as a second intermediate host of this heterophyid cuke in Korea.

A total of 248 specimens of Todarodes pacificus were purchased from the Jumungin fishery market at the East Sea area two times during the period from November 1 to December 30, 1995. Samples were examined for their infection status with larvae anisakid. Anisakid larvae were collected from muscle, viscera and omentum. One hundred sixteen larval anisakids sorted from 34 specimens of T. pacificus (13.7% of infection rate) ranged from 13.5 to 29.5 mm in their body length. They were classified based on morphological and morphometric observations as follows; Anisakis type I larvae (68 larvae, 58.6%: positive rate), Contracaecum type A (5, 4.3%), Anisakis type II (17, 14.5%), Contracaecum type D (8, 7.0%) and unknown type (18, 15.5%).
