This paper is related to structural assessment considering the hydroelastic response of ultra large container ships, especially from whipping (bow or stern impacts) and from springing (resonance). In general, whipping contributes both to increased fatigue and extreme loading, while springing does mainly contribute to increased fatigue loading. To evaluate the hydroelastic response quantitatively with high accuracy, numerical code considering hydro-structure coupling was applied and fatigue strength of a 13,100 TEU class containership was verified. The segmented model test and full scale measurement were also needed to assess the effect of whipping and springing on the fatigue and extreme capacity in more realistic way and for verification of the numerical tools. With reference to class rule, fatigue assessment considering springing effect and extreme assessment considering whipping effect were introduced.
Unlike structures in the air, the vibration analysis of a submerged or floating structure such as offshore structures is possibly only when the fluid-structures is understood, as the whole or part of the structure is in contact with water. Through the comparision between the experimental result and the finite element analysis result for a simple cylindrical model, it was verified that an added mass effects on the cylindrical structure. Using the commercial FEA program ANSYS(v.11.0), underwater added mass was superposed on the mass matrix of the structure. A frequency response analysis of forced vibration in the frequency considered the dynamic load was also performed. It was proposed to find the several important modes of resonance peak for these fixed cylindrical type structures. Furthermore, it is expected that the analysis method and the data in this study can be applied to a dynamic structural design and dynamic performance evaluation for the ground and marine purpose of power generator by wind.

FSI (Fluid Structure Interaction) method, in this study, has been applied to analyzing thermal characteristics of a high speed machine tool spindle system. The spindle is composed of angular contact ceramic ball bearings, a high speed built-in motor, a cooling jacket, and so on. The cooling jacket has three inlets and outlets. Using the FSI method, temperature distributions and thermal displacements of the spindle system were computed considering the heating of the front and rear bearings and the built-in motor. The results computed using the FSI method were compared with those determined by experiment and using the conventional numerical approach. The results determined using the FSI method were similar to those from the conventional numerical approach but showed better agreement with the experimental results. Therefore, it is concluded that the FSI method is useful for analyzing the thermal characteristics of high speed spindles and can be applied to the design of high speed spindles.

Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband noise from a leak location and can be propagated to both directions of water pipes. This sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than 300m.

Liquid fluctuation called sloshing within liquid-storage tank gives rise to the significant effect on the dynamic stability of tank. This liquid sloshing can be effectively suppressed by installing baffles within the tank, and the suppression effect depends strongly on the design parameters of baffle like the baffle configuration. The present study is concerned with the parametric evaluation of the sloshing suppression effect for the CNG-storage tank, a next generation liquefied fuel for vehicles, to the major design parameters of baffle, such as the baffle configuration, the installation angle and height, the hole size of baffle. The coupled FEM-FVM analysis was employed to effectively reflect the interaction between the interior liquid flow and the tank elastic deformation.

Measurements results of flow-structure-interactions (FSI) of an air-lifted body are introduced. An adaptive stereoscopic-PIV system has been constructed for the measurements of the air-lifted body. The measurement system consists of two cameras and optical sensors. The flow characteristics around a lifted cylinder body(length=60mmm, diameter =10mm, polystyrene) in the swirling flow field in a vertical pipe (length=600mm, inner diameter=) are investigated by the use of the constructed adaptive stereoscopic-PIV system. The images of the two cameras were used for the analysis of the flow fields around the floated cylinder body. The images of the cylinder body captured by the two cameras were used for the analyses of its motions. Four optical sensors (LED) were used for the detection of the postures of the freely-lifted cylinder body. The FSI analyses have been carried out to find the physical conditions at which the floating body is stabilized with its upright postures.
A liquid storage rectangular tank structures are used in many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Ship structures have many tanks in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and cargo tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tank structures. Many authors have studied vibration of cylindrical and rectangular tanks structures containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls through fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass have to be considered. In the present paper, coupling effect between panels of tank structure on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region have investigated numerically and experimentally.

Although a yacht sails operate with large displacement due to very thin thickness, many studies for flow around yacht sails have not considered the sail deformation. The sail deformation not only caused a change in the center of effect(CE) on the sail but also a change in the thrust of the sail. The change of the CE and thrust affects the center of lateral resistance(CLR) and side forces of the hull, and the balance of the yacht. These changes affect the motion of the yacht which changes the velocity of the yacht. Thus, when analyzing the flow around yacht sails, the sail deformation should be considered. In the present study, fluid-structure-interaction(FSI) analysis of a two dimensional section of yacht sails was performed to consider the effects of sail deformation on the lift and drag performance. FSI and moving mesh methods were studied. Computational methods were verified using benchmark test cases such as the flow around horizontal and vertical cantilever beams. Shape deformation, pressure distribution, lift forces and separation flow were compared for both rigid and deformable sail.

This research investigates the electromechanical characteristics of a spindle motor in a free-falling mobile hard disk drive before unexpected shock. Electromechanical simulation includes a time-stepping finite element analysis of the magnetic field in a speed controlled brushless DC motor and dynamic analysis of the stationary and rotating part linked by the fluid dynamic bearing under the free-falling condition. Analysis results show that the dynamic characteristics of the rotating spindle system during free-falling state have an effect on the relative motion between the stationary and rotating part of HDD. It results from the variation of reaction force in the bearing area due to the gravity force exerted on the rotating part of HDD, and the free-falling condition can be detected by observing the signal of the spindle motor and disk-head interface without using an accelerometer.

In the previous report, A numerical tool of vibration analysis of a 3-dimensional tank is developed by using finite element method for plates and boundary element method for fluid region. In this paper, the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region and mode characteristics in accordance with changing breadth of the plates are investigated numerically and discussed.
