Phonotaxis of the African Mole Cricket, Gryllotalpa africana Palisot de Beauvois (땅강아지의 주음성에 관한 연구)

  • Phonotaxis of the African mole cricket, Gryllotalpa africana palisot de Beauvois, was investigated in 1990 and 1992 at the agronomy Experiment Station of Korea Ginseng & Tobacco Research Institute in Hwaseong-gun, Kyonggi-do, Male adults produced calling sounds (calling songs) through the openings of subsurface burrows. Intensities of the sound were 77-80 dB at 15 cm above the openings. When tape recordings of male calling songs were broadcasted outdoors at 105-110 dB by two horn speakers installed at the center of a 1.4 m diameter-funnel, flying adults were attracted for 1.5 hours from about 30 minutes after sunset. Among attracted adults, 14.3-16.9% landed in the funnel, and 65.7-74.7% landed on the ground within 2m form the sound source. Females were 66.7-74.3%, which seemed to be due to the sex ratio of the population in the field. Adults landing in the funnel and at the distance of within 2m from the center of the funnel were tend to be a little more than those attracted to a blacklight trap.

Dasan's Conceptual Thoughts on the Garden in 「Jaehwangsangyuincheop」 (「제황상유인첩(題黃裳幽人帖)」에 나타난 다산(茶山)의 정원상(庭園想))

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the idea of the ideal garden, pursued by Dasan, by analyzing the production process of his writing and the location of his dwelling, and the characteristics of the garden in the writings of Dasan (茶山) Jeong Yag-Yong (丁若鏞)'s "Jaehwangsangyuincheop (題黃裳幽人帖)" is concerned with his writings on an imaginary garden (意園). This paper assumed that "Jaehwangsangyuincheop" served as a blueprint for his ideal dwelling. The main research subjects are the external scenes described in the "Jaehwangsangyuincheop", and the garden elements and spatial construction that were visualized as a Korean Ink Painting (水墨畵) through the analysis of related works. The results are as follows. First, Hwang Sang was Dasan's favorite pupil, and "Jaehwangsangyuincheop" was written by Dasan while at Boeunsanbang in the winter of 1805 as an answer to a question that Hwang Sang posed about the residence of a hermit. By referring to this response, Hwang Sang established Ilsoksanbang (一粟山房) under Mt. Cheongae in Daegu-myeon, Gangjin. Secondly, the residence in "Jaehwangsangyuincheop" has mountains behind it and water in front of it (背山臨水). The residence was used as a place to combine life and leisure. It was an ideal residence that secluded the scholar(隱士). Thirdly, Dasan's ideal garden was shown as operation of natural geography in a residential location, practically using various plant materials, expanding physical boundaries of garden, pursuing synesthetic aesthetics while enjoying garden elements, and having an active experience of the taste for the arts in the extended garden. "Jaehwangsangyuincheop" depicted the life of a scholar with the taste of elegance (雅趣), who live in reclusiveness (隱逸), which was wanted by Dasan after exile. It was realized as Ilsoksanbang. "Jaehwangsangyuincheop" was interpreted as the ideal of a feasible dwelling that faithfully reflects Dasan's conceptual thoughts on the garden.

Selection of Systemic Chemicals and Attractiveness of Sunflower to Ricania spp.(Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) Adults (갈색날개매미충 성충에 대한 해바라기의 유인력과 침투이행성 약제 선발)

  • Sunflower, selected as a trap plant that can be controlled by attracting Ricania spp. adults via attraction has the highest attractiveness during the preoviposition period. Considering the ecological characteristics of Ricania spp., adults are distinguished by the preoviposition and oviposition periods and the attractiveness of sunflower to Ricania spp. adults was 91.4~95.2% higher than that of blueberry during the preoviposition period. On August 20, when Ricania spp. adults entered the oviposition season, sunflower attractiveness was low at 9.8~11.6% owing to preference for tree species. Based on the result of the selection of systemic chemicals that could be used concomitantly with sunflower, all chemicals, except etofenprox, showed a high controlling effect of over 90%, and among them, dinotefuran showed the highest insecticidal rate of 95.8%. The systemic chemicals acetamiprid, dinotefuran, thiamethoxam, and imidacloprid persisted for 13 days (survey period). Therefore, the concomitant use of sunflower and systemic chemicals can reduce the density of Ricania spp. entering farmlands and their populations in surrounding habitats, which are expected to help in stabilizing the ecosystem.

  • 국내 토마토 소비가 증가하면서 재배면적과 생산액은 늘어났지만 수량은 계속 정체되어 있다. 이는 국내 토마토 농가의 단위면적 당 생산성이 낮기 때문이다. 이에 따라 국립원예특작과학원에서는 토마토 어린모의 줄기나 가지의 생장점을 두 줄기로 유인해 재배하는 기술을 개발했다. 그 결과 종묘비를 절감하고 생산성도 높일 수 있을 것으로 보인다.

Effects of Light Trap Structure and Lamp Type on the Attraction of Chestnut Pests in an Orchard (밤재배원에서 유살등 구조 및 램프의 종류가 해충 유인력에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of insect capture were studied in a chestnut orchard using three different light traps (A, B, and C type) with various lamps. The mercury lamp trap captured 125 insect species, out of which 115 were chestnut pests. The B and C type light traps, comprising a Dulux-EL white lamp, were examined for their capturing ability. The type B trap attracted Coleopteran insects (83%), while type C captured Lepidopteran insects (73%). The mercury clarity lamp along with the type B light trap was most effective in attracting Curculio sikkimensis adults (mean, 9.8 adults), while the Dulux-EL lamp captured the highest number of Dichocrocis punctiferalis adults (mean, 10.2 adults) using the type C light trap. These results suggest that selection of the appropriate types of light traps and lamps based on the target pest species is critical in ensuring effective and eco-friendly control of the pest population.

Monitoring Technique of Pumpkin Fruit Flies Using Terpinyl Acetate-Protein Diet Lure and Development of Its Spraying Formulation for The Fly Control (Terpinyl acetate-단백질먹이 유인제를 이용한 호박과실파리류 연중발생 모니터링 기술 및 살포용 방제 제형 개발)

  • Two tephritid fruit flies are infesting pumpkins in Korea. Both are classified into genus of Zeugodacus. The striped fruit fly, Z. scutellata, males are attracted to a lure called Cuelure (CL), which has been used to monitor the occurrence of this fruit fly in the crop field. In contrast, no effective male lure was not developed to monitor the pumpkin fruit fly, Z. depressa. Protein diet lure has been used to attract females of most fruit flies. The addition of terpinyl acetate (TA) was effective to increase the attractiveness of Z. depressa. This study aimed to monitor the occurrence of Z. depressa in pumpkin field with TA-protein diet lure. To validate the efficiency of TA-protein diet lure, Z. scutellata was monitored in a year of 2019 using CL and TA-protein diet lures, and the yearly monitoring data were compared. The occurrence patterns derived from both lures were similar except late season after October. The extended catches of TA-protein diet lure might be explained by the adult diapause induction of Z. scutellata at late September. Monitoring Z. depressa with TA-protein diet lure gave two peaks at mid July and August-September, in which more than 80% catches were females. Based on the attractiveness of TA-protein diet lure, its wettable powder with an addition of spinosad insecticide was formulated and sprayed to pumpkin crops. After 7 days post-spray, the control efficacy recorded more than 70%. However, the control efficacies decreased as the time progressed after the spray. These results demonstrated the application of TA-protein diet lure for monitoring occurrence of Z. depressa in pumpkin-cultivating field conditions. The wettable powder containing spinosad can be applied to develop a new control agent against two pumpkin fruit flies.

Efficacy of Wax-formulated Lures on Monitoring a Quarantine Insect Pest, Zeugodacus caudata (Diptera: Tephritidae) (왁스 제형 유인제의 검역 대상 과실파리(Zeugodacus caudata)에 대한 유인 효과)

  • Monitoring exotic fruit flies is essential for quarantine procedure. Wax formulation containing fruit fly lures is relatively long-lasting in field conditions and has been applicable to monitor the fruit flies. This study was performed to extend the application of wax formulation against different fruit flies. The wax formulation containing lures was tested in Thailand, at which various exotic fruit flies inhabited. Captured flies were identified to be Bactrocera dorsalis, Zeugodacus cucurbitae, and Zeugodacus caudata by molecular diagnosis technique.

Evaluation of Pheromone Lure of Grapholita molesta (Lpidoptera: Torticidae) and Forecasting Its Phenological Events in Suwon (복숭아순나방 성페로몬 미끼 평가 및 수원지역에서 주요 발생시기 예찰)

  • The sex pheromone blend (28-12AC : E8-12AC : Z8-12OH = 95 : 5 : 1) of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), was evaluated with reference to its male attractivity at different dosage and lure longevity of 1.0 mg in a field condition. Also, degree-days (DD) were calculated up to major phenological events of G. molesta using seasonal adult flights monitored by pheromone traps and egg population densities in early season in Suwon peach orchards. In the range of 0.1-4.0 mg dosage examined, G. molesta males caught in pheromone trap decreased with increasing total pheromone doses. The highest number of G. molesta males were attracted in traps baited with 0.1 mg-lure, and there were no significantly differences among 0.5 to 4.0 mg-lure. In longevity test with a 1.0 mg-lure, there was no difference in mean numbers of G. molesta males caught between traps with fresh-baited lures every 20d and field-lasted lures up to ${\approx}50d$ after trap installation, but thereafter more G. molesta males were attracted in the field-lasted lures than in the fresh-baited lures. Accumulated degree-days (DD) from January 1 to the first adult emergence (biofix) were 39DD at a lower threshold temperature $8.1^{\circ}C$. Degree-days from the biofix up to the 1st adult peak through 4th peak were 98DD, 620DD, 1233DD, and 1916DD, respectively. Required degree-days from the 1st adult peak to the 1st egg peak were 130DD, while the 2nd egg peak timing was simultaneous with the 2nd adult peak. Further, management strategies of G. molesta were discussed in peach orchards.

  • 단고추(Capsicum annum)는 중앙아메리카와 남아메리카의 열대지방이 원산지로 알려져 있고 매운맛이 없으며 미숙과를 주로 샐러드용으로 이용하는 원추형 과실을 착생하는 품종군으로 일반고추재배와는 달리 반드시 정지 및 유인을 해야만 좋은 과실을 생산할 수 있으며, 유인 및 관리정도에 따라 품질의 차이가 커 이것이 가격에 영향을 미쳐 농가의 소득과 직결되여 있다. 정지와 유인은 보통재배의 경우 U자형과 V자형으로 하고 있으나 노동력이 많이 소요된다. (중략)
