  • The effect of food source in aggregation pheromone trap of bean bug, Riptortus clavatus, was evaluated in terms of the trap attractiveness using water-ran and cylinder-type traps. Water-pan trap baited with pheromone + food (dried soybean + dried peanut + water) attracted significantly more number of females and males than those with pheromone or control trap. Although cylinder-type trap baited with pheromone + food did not show significantly higher attractiveness, it attracted more adults and nymphs than the pheromone and control traps. Further research on the effect of trap types on attractiveness is needed.

  • Four LEDs (blue, green, red, and white light) were tested to identify the most attractive wave length to utilize as the forecasting tools for the B. tabaci in glass houses. Attractiveness was evaluated by the total number of the B. tabaci attached to a yellow sticky trap. In the condition of no host plant supplement, the attraction efficacy was ordered from high to low as blue light (107.3±2.5), white light (83.0±12.1), red light (58±21.8), and green light (39.7±8.1). In the supplement of the host plant, the attraction was observed in the order of blue light (52±17.4), red light (38.7±5.8), green light (12.7±1.5), and white light (11.7±5.0). In both experimental conditions, blue light showed the highest attraction. In terms of the host plant effect to LED attraction, it varied following as white light (85.9%), green light (68.1%), blue light (51.6%), and red light (33.3%). This result suggests that red light is the least affected by the host plant. In the evaluation of the relative control efficacy, it was determined following as red light (66.7%), blue light (48.5%), green light (31.9%) and white light (14.1%) (F3,8 = 14.7, P = 0.001). Taken together, blue light had a very high initial attraction, and red light was revealed low attraction effect by the supplement of the host plant. In field demonstration experiments, a high attractive efficacy was not observed due to low-temperature conditions, but similar higher attractive efficacy was observed in blue and red lights compared to the control. The commercialization of LEDs using red and blue in the future is expected to provide important information regarding B. tabaci population density forecast in glass house.

  • Three sex pheromone components (cis-8-dodecenyl acetate (Z12Ac), trans-8-dodecenyl acetate (E12Ac), cis-8-dodecenol (Z12OH)) of the Oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, were chemically synthesized. Especially to increase the composition of cis-stereoisomer, a triple bond intermediate was hydrogenated at $-20^{\circ}C$ with catalytic $Pd/BaSO_{4}$. The resulting product consisted of the acetates with a stereoisomer ratio in 92:8 (Z:E). The biological activity of the synthesized pheromone compounds was analyzed both in male responses and orientation disruption. The indoor pheromone effect was determined by male flight behavior showing wing movement in response to lure. Different mixtures of the synthetic pheromone components were prepared by mixing acetate and alcohol components in 100:0, 99:1, and 90:10 (g/g) and tested with a comparison of a standard commercial pheromone lure. The highest pheromone effect was observed in only acetate mixture (100:0) and the effect was reduced with the addition of the alcohol component. This indoor pheromone effect could be observed in field monitoring trial, in which 100:0 mixture showed the highest trap catches. Orientation disruption assay was conducted indoor by using a cage, in which the center had a commercial lure on sticky plate and the four candidates were placed at 6 cm away from the central lure on each of four directions. Test males were released to the arena during overnight (12 h) and then the caught males on the sticky plate were counted. The synthesized pheromone as well as the commercial pheromone showed 100% orientation disruption. However, the orientation disruption effect was reduced with decrease in the number of the surrounding disrupting pheromone baits. These results clearly suggest that the synthesized sex pheromone of G. molesta is biologically active and can be used for field mating disruption.

  • Mass trapping of the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis, has been considered as an option to control this pest. This study applied the commercial lures to the hot pepper-cultivating greenhouses and assessed the enhancement of the attracting efficiency by adding to sticky traps. There was no color difference in the attracting efficiency between blue and yellow sticky traps. However, the installation position of the traps was crucial in the greenhouses. The more thrips were captured within host cropping area than outside areas of the crop. In vertical trap position, it was the most optimal to install the traps at the crop crown. Using these installation parameters, the yellow sticky traps captured approximately 1% population of the thrips. To enhance the trapping efficiency, the commercial lures containing aggregation pheromone or 4-methoxybenzaldehyde were added to the yellow sticky traps. However, these commercial lures did not significantly enhance the trapping efficiency compared to the yellow sticky trap alone. In contrast, Y-tube olfactometry assays confirmed the high efficiency of the aggregation pheromone or another plant volatile (methyl isonicotinate) to attract the thrips. Interestingly, these lure components had lower attracting efficiencies compared to the hot pepper flowers. The high attractive efficiency of the flowers was supported by the observation that the commercial lure was effective to enhance the trapping efficiency of the yellow sticky trap against F. occidentalis in Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum) field without any flowers. This study indicates the limitation of the commercial lures in application to hot pepper fields for the mass trapping of F. occidentalis. It also suggests active volatile component(s) from hot pepper flowers to attract F. occidentalis.

  • The phenomenon that young people avoid employment in industrial complexes, which is one of the biggest issues at social and economic dimension, is getting more important. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of youth attraction types by industrial complexes by making Youth Attraction Index. First, as the correlation between youth distribution of each industrial complex and youth attraction index of each industrial complex is analyzed, it shows a high level of correlation coefficient. There is also positive correlation between youth distribution of industrial complexes and other specific sectors except for accessibility. In addition, industrial complexes with superior working environment, innovation environment and amenities of surrounded areas are included in type I(type with superior youth attraction) and different characteristics are shown by each type. In consideration of these, policy priorities of each type are suggested. Based on these results, customized package programs need to be established for each type of youth attraction.

  • The ability of sunflower, bean, green perilla, and sesame to attract Metcalfa pruinosa was tested in both laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory experiment, sunflowers showed the highest attractiveness to M. pruinosa nymphs and adults. These results were the same as those in the field experiment. Sunflowers showed the highest attractiveness among the four candidates as a trap plant for M. pruinosa, with comparable average attractiveness values for nymphs and adults to those in the laboratory. Young beans also showed high attractiveness to M. pruinosa, albeit lower than those of sunflowers. However, the attractiveness of mature beans was low. Sunflowers consistently (P < 0.05) showed significantly higher attractiveness than that of the other three plants, regardless of plant age. Thus, sunflowers would serve as a good trap plant for both the nymphs and adults of M. pruinosa.

  • Methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate is the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae). Attractiveness of the pheromone synthesized in Korea was compared with that of synthesized in Japan in the field. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. Catches in trap baited with Korean pheromone was significantly higher than that baited with Japanese one only in one orchard out of three sweet persimmon orchards in 2008. However there was no difference in trap catches between Korean and Japanese pheromones at three sites in 2009. Gas chromatography analysis showed that the components of both pheromones were not different each other. Monitoring of P. stali seasonal fluctuation using Korean pheromone showed that the bugs were most captured in August, 2008 and in September, 2009.

  • Trapping efficacy of lures obtained by mixing sex pheromone attractants of two or three species in a single dispenser were evaluated in peach and apple orchards for three lepidopteran fruit borers, Grapholita molesta (GM), Carposina sasaki (CS), and Conogethes punctiferalis (CP) which use different chemicals as their sex attractants. In the peach orchard, the trapping efficacy of the mixed lures of GM and CS attractants were reduced for GM trapping, compared with the single GM lure. The population fluctuation patterns of GM were highly correlated between the single lure and all the mixed lures. In the apple orchard, the efficacy of all the mixed lures were not reduced for GM trapping. The trapping efficacy of all the mixed lures for CS trapping were not reduced compared with the CS single lure in both the peach and apple orchards. In the peach orchard, the population fluctuation patterns of CS were highly correlated between the single lure and the mixed lures. The efficacy of the mixed lures for CP trapping could not be determined because of the small number of caught samples. The results indicated that mixed lures could be utilized for monitoring of the annual adult emergence of two species, GM and CS.

  • The effects of insect capture were studied in a chestnut orchard using three different light traps (A, B, and C type) with various lamps. The mercury lamp trap captured 125 insect species, out of which 115 were chestnut pests. The B and C type light traps, comprising a Dulux-EL white lamp, were examined for their capturing ability. The type B trap attracted Coleopteran insects (83%), while type C captured Lepidopteran insects (73%). The mercury clarity lamp along with the type B light trap was most effective in attracting Curculio sikkimensis adults (mean, 9.8 adults), while the Dulux-EL lamp captured the highest number of Dichocrocis punctiferalis adults (mean, 10.2 adults) using the type C light trap. These results suggest that selection of the appropriate types of light traps and lamps based on the target pest species is critical in ensuring effective and eco-friendly control of the pest population.

  • A control technique using mass-trapping was developed against thrips infesting hot peppers cultivating in greenhouses. It was essential to develop effective lure(s) attracting thrips for the control technique. Especially, mass-trapping using aggregation pheromone (AP) of the thrips was not much effective in open field cultivating hot peppers. This study aimed to develop a new lure to enhance the attractiveness of AP-based mass-trapping. In addition, this study was designed to investigate the decrease of attractiveness of the AP-based mass-trapping in the open field conditions. Methyl isonicotinate (MIN) as a new lure was assessed by the laboratory olfactometry and showed its attractiveness to thrips and its mixture effect with AP to attract the thrips. These results led us to test the AP+MIN mixture in the open field conditions cultivating hot peppers. The mixture significantly enhanced the mass-trapping efficacy in the open field conditions. Especially, the significant increase of the captured numbers was found in the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. Furthermore, the increase of the AP concentration in the mass-trapping significantly increased the captured numbers in F. occidentalis and other thrips occurring in the hot pepper field. This study demonstrated the difference in the AP-based mass-trapping efficacy of the thrips between greenhouse and open field conditions. It also showed the increase of mass-trapping efficacy by increasing AP concentration in the trap. Especially, this study proposes a high efficient mass-trapping technology by the addition of MIN to AP especially against F. occidentalis.
