  • In the early developmental stages of robotics,hydraulics played an important role. As the power-to-weight ratio of electric motors increased, they eventually replaced hydraulic actuators in robot manipulators. Recently, however, task requirements have dictated that the manipulator payload capacity increase to accomodate greater payload, greater length, greater reaction forces, and hydraulic actusators are being studied as an effective form of robot actuation again. For efficient control of hydraulic actuators, the knowledge of its dynamic equation is essential. However, the dynamic equation of hydraulic actuators are nonlinear, and the dynamic coefficients are time varying. In this paper, an estimation algorithm of the dynamic coefficients of the hydraulic piston dynamics are formulated. Simulation results are presented to show the possibility of the parameter estimation.

  • In the study, a control strategy using a feedback linearization compensator and a disturbance observer was suggested and applied to the synchronization control of two hydraulic cylinders. The hydraulic system consists of a proportional directional control valve with overlap characteristic near the neutral position, a conventional hydraulic cylinder and an external load. The control performances of the system were verified through numerical simulations. From the simulations, it was ascertained that excellent control performances were obtained with the suggested control strategy.

  • In this study a new pattern of pressure control of hydraulic cylinder using high speed On-Off solenoid valve in the electro-hydraulic system has been suggested. The control valve is 3-way high speed On-Off solenoid valve which is operated by PWM(Pulse Width Modulation)control signal. The high speed On-Off solenoid valve has a tendency to induce severe pressure fluctuation in the hydraulic actuator so it has not been used for the purpose of closed loop control with direct pres-sure feedback. In this study closed loop control with direct pressure feedback is enabled by using a digital filter which has linear minimum mean square filter algorithm. Through some experiments it is confirmed that stable pressure control can be realized by the proposed control technique.

  • This paper is a numerical study on the correlation of leakage by the variation of operating temperature and orifice diameter applying to hydrostatic bearing in hydraulic actuator. Compared with Brackbill and Kandlikar experimental paper to verify the validity of the numerical analysis technique of the present study, we derive the result that the results of experiments and numerical analysis to match very well. CFD analysis program were analyzed using a commercial code FLUENT V14.5. Inlet and outlet, were applied pressure conditions, the main variables of the analysis is temperature and the orifice inner diameter. The analysis results, pressure value has decreased as the oil temperature and the orifice diameter increases.

  • An adhesively bonded power steering cylinder with a steel tube and an aluminum bracket was developed to reduce the weight of steering systems. To achieve the joint strength between the steel tube and of the aluminum bracket, the shape aluminum bracket re-designed by using the FE-analysis. Fracture behavior of the adhesive layer was considered by a cohesive zone model(CZM), which is based on the two-parameter fracture phenomenon with critical stress and fracture toughness. From the result of FE-analysis with CZM, re-designed power steering cylinder satisfied the desired joint strength for axial and torsion modes. And its joint strength was verified by the fracture test in each mode.

  • An in-process method of diagnosing the spool wear of hydraulic servovalves was explored. The diagnostic method discussed in this paper is for force-control hydraulic servo systems. The key principle used is that pressure sensitivity of a servovalve drops as the valve spool wears out so that it is possible to determine the spool condition by monitoring pressure sensitivity. A diagnostic algorithm was developed and evaluated through numerical simulation and experiments. Two major steps of diagnosis are the evaluation of null bias of the servovalve and the approximation of pressure sensitivity, both of which could be successfully done during normal operation of a servo system. The difference between a new servovalve and a worn valve could be clearly detected in-process, and the diagnostic test was found to be repeatable.

  • High speed on-off electro-magnetic valves have been used for pressure control or flow control in automotive or construction machine servomechanisms. These systems require quicker valve switching speed to improve control preciseness. The authors designed and manufactured an electric valve driver with quick response characteristics by using 3 power source type valve driver concept. In experiments by using a hydraulic system incorporating the new valve driver, the new driver shortened the switching lag time from 5 ms to 1.3 ms. And also the new driver showed excellent position tracking control performances.

  • The best way to prevent the corrosion of piston rod is a selection of quality of the material and method of construction which minimize the porosity. The high velocity oxy fuel(HVOF) method, which generates lower porosity than existing plasma spray, was applied to ceramic laminated bond layer. Porosity percentage fell to bellow 2%, lower than that of plasma spray at 7%. Coating material of ceramic-coated main layer was selected as the $Cr_2O_3$ affiliation material, which is more dense than $Al_2O_3$ affiliation. To fill up the pores formed after the coating process, we sealed the bond layer and main layer. Sealing process was performed twice, once after the coating and once after the grinding. Upon the anti-corrosion test on the sealed sample and on the non-sealed sample, it is confirmed that the sealed sample was not corroded for 1,000 hours while the non-sealed sample was corroded within 48 hours.

  • Basic characteristics of wheel brake accumulator for aircraft is studied. Wheel brake accumulator maintains the braking pressure for parking mode, and also it supplies the hydraulic pressure to the wheel brake system for emergency mode. The design requirements of wheel brake accumulator are analyzed and the initial sizing is conducted. A wheel brake accumulator consists of a cylinder and a brake control module, and the basic configuration and detail components are presented. Again, structural static analysis of vessel is performed with NASTARN/PATRAN for preliminary design.

  • A remote control system was developed in order to operate by push-buttons the conventional drum and chute components, which have been operated manually, in a concrete mixer-truck. As actuators, a hydraulic power unit was used for chute operations: two DC motors for drum operations. The devised drum controller consisted of three electric circuits : an analog proportional-integral control circuit, a drum acceleration circuit, and an emergency stop circuit. The remote control system was installed to be tested experimentally and then was evaluated to work successfully with a desirable accuracy.
