  • The effects of pretreatment of GAC and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the sorption capacity for ο-cresol were investigated using pretreated GAC under oxic and anoxic conditions. Virgin GAC was used with pretreated GACs by $O_2$, acid and base as sorbents. Sorption capacity of GAC was dependent on the oxygen conditions according to the pretreatment methods. Virgin GAC showed increased sorption capacity when DO was present in the solution, while $O_2$-pretreated GAC did not show any considerable capacity change. Acid- and base-pretreated GACs were relatively more influenced by presence of DO as compared with virgin GAC. Both acid and base-pretreated GACs showed a rapid sorption rate at the initial stage, but as contact time became longer the sorption was slower. Sorbed ο-cresol was extracted with micro-Soxhlet extraction apparatus using the GAC separated from the rate experiments. Within 1 hour both acid and base-pretreated GACs showed the decrease in extraction efficiencies under both oxic and anoxic conditions. After 1 hour such a trend (the increase as contact time was longer) was not observed and showed relatively constant efficiencies of 35∼50%. According to the results of this study $O_2$contacted with GAC before sorption as well as DO present in the solution during sorption could influence the GAC sorption capacity.

  • Ice wedges are subsurface ice mass structures that formed mainly by freezing precipitation with airborne dust and surrounding soil particles flowed through the active layer into the cracks growing by repeating thermal contractions in the deeper permafrost layer over time. These ice masses characteristically contain high concentrations of solutes and solids. Because of their unique properties and distribution, the possibility of harnessing ice wedges as an alternative archive for reconstructing paleoclimate and paleoenvironment has been recently suggested despite limited studies. It is imperative to preserve the physicochemical properties of the ice wedge (e.g., solute concentration, mineral particles) without any potential alteration to use it as a proxy for reconstructing the paleo-information. Thawing the ice wedge samples is prerequisite for the assessment of their physicochemical properties, during which the paleo-information could be unintentionally altered by any methodological artifact. This study examined the effect of thawing conditions and procedures on the physicochemical properties of solutes and solid particles in ice wedge samples collected from Cyuie, East Siberia. Four different thawing conditions with varying temperatures (4 and 23℃) and oxygen exposures (oxic and anoxic) for the ice wedge sample treatment were examined. Ice wedge samples thawed at 4℃ under anoxic conditions, wherein biological activity and oxidation were kept to a minimum, were set as the standard thawing conditions to which the effects of temperature and oxygen were compared. The results indicate that temperature and oxygen exposure have negligible effects on the physicochemical characteristics of the solid particles. However, the chemical features of the solution (e.g., pH, electric conductivity, alkalinity, and concentration of major cations and trace elements) at 4℃ under oxic conditions were considerably altered, compared to those measured under the standard thawing conditions. This study shows that the thawing condition of ice wedge samples can affect their chemical features and thereby the geochemical information therein for the reconstruction of the paleoclimate and/or paleoenvironment.

  • We investigated the properties of Korean traditional animal glue which are associated with the use of different parts of cattle hide and extraction conditions. Both average molecular weight(Mw, Mz) and polydispersity (PDI) of the animal glue increased with extraction time, whereas only PDI decreased after 48h. There were no differences in the average molecular weight and PDI for the different cattle hide parts used, although a individual difference was observed with regard to total molecular weight. Differences in extracts over time were compared by investigating the amide regions representing the gelatien component of the animal glue. The triple helix structure of the belly skin deteriorated in a manner proportional to the extraction time, and differences were observed for each cattle hide part. The yellowness increased with the extraction time; however, the viscosity was not proportional to the average change in molecular weight. This study has some limitations because of difficulties in the quality control of cases where small amounts of glue were extracted as small differences might impact the overall results considerably. Further research exploring various extraction conditions is required to ensure the prodiction of traditional animal glue with optimum qualities.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the combined effects of aerobic training and diacylglycerol ingestion on lipid profiles and resting metabolic rate changes in obese men. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: the Diacylglycerol group (D, n=6), aerobic training group (E, n=6), and diacylglycerol ingestion and aerobic training group (DE, n=6). Diacylglycerol was ingested and aerobic exercise training performed for 12 weeks. The information from the research was calculated through a Windows SPSS/PC+ Ver. 12.0K statistics package to standardize the means and deviations for each group. Then, two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the research hypothesis. Percent body fat, blood lipid profiles and resting metabolic rate changes were tested to evaluate the combined effect of aerobic exercise training and diacylglycerol ingestion. The results of this study were as follows; DG ingestion was shown to have a positive effect on body weight and body fat, while having a negative effect on resting metabolic rate changes. However, aerobic training was shown to have a positive effect on all factors including body weight, body fat, and resting metabolic rate. In conclusion, DG ingestion and exercise training were not shown to have synergistic effects on resting metabolic rate changes, percent body fat and lipid profiles, while aerobic exercise training was shown to have a positive effect on resting metabolic rate changes, percent body fat, and lipid profiles. To investigate the therapeutic effect of DG ingestion and aerobic exercise for obese men, analysis of catecholamine, cAMP, HSL, or insulin sensitivity should be considered.

  • In this study of the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) of paper sludge, fed-batch cultivation of Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei KLB58 was attempted to produce viable KLB58 cells and lactic acid. Optimal culture conditions, including the temperature and concentration of the supplemented enzyme, were examined in terms of lactic acid production and viable cell count. When the effects of culture temperature and $\beta$-glucosidase concentration were examined in fed-batch SSF, the highest viable cell counts and lactic acid production (i.e. 5$\times$$10^9$ CFU/ml and 45 g/L, respectively) were obtained at 37$^{\circ}C$ and 2 unit/ml of $\beta$-glucosidase.

  • Three experiments were conducted using a verification task to examine good and poor readers' generation of causal inferences(with because sentences) and contrastive inferences(with although sentences). The unfamiliar, critical verification statement was either explicitly mentioned or was implied. In Experiment 1, both good and poor readers responded accurately to the critical statement, suggesting that both groups had the linguistic knowledge necessary to the required inferences. Differences were found, however, in the groups' verification latencies. Poor, but not good, readers responded faster to explicit than to implicit verification statements for both because and although sentences. In Experiment 2, poor readers were induced to generate causal inferences for the because experimental sentences by including fillers that were apparently counterfactual unless a causal inference was made. In Experiment 3, poor readers were induced to generate contrastive inferences for the although sentences by including fillers that could only be resolved by making a contrastive inference. Verification latencies for the critical statements showed that poor readers made causal inferences in Experiment 2 and contrastive inferences in Experiment 3 doting comprehension. These results were discussed in terms of context effect: Specific encoding operations performed on anomaly backgrounded in another passage would form part of the context that guides the ongoing activity in processing potentially relevant subsequent text.

  • The National Assembly and its institutions have heavy duties to the nation. Knowledge and information resources which they produce, manage and preserve are part of history and evidence of democracy. Therefore, activities for systematic management and long-term preservation of the resources are important tasks at a national level. However, organizational status of the institutions, which are in charge of management and preservation of the resource, are not in accord with their responsibilities. In this context, this study aims at analyzing necessary and sufficient conditions for establishing the National Assembly Larchiveum and at exploring possible strategies. The study conducts literature reviews concerning necessities, procedures, and success factors of collaboration. Futhermore it analyzes various cases and divides them into several types based on collaborative levels and geographical categories. Based on these theoretical discourse the study discuss the history of the National Assembly's memory institutions and obstacles to their collaboration. As a result, it provides alternative strategies for establishing the National Assembly Larchiveum.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of medicinal plants application as an edible functional food resource. This research was planned to apply Artesmisia capillaris, which is one of the most widely used oriental medicinal resource into beverages, and to evaluate the validity and the nutrients of the developed beverage with Artemisia capillaris. Following this plan, we analyzed contents of the general nutritional composition, mineral and amino acid contents. And to evaluate the improvement of blood circulation and the ability to recover from fatigue, we had a group of athletes to regularly take the beverage before and after exercise and checked the heart rates, and blood components before exercise and after exercise. Brix, pH and titratable acidity of develoued drink were 9.2%, 4.4 and 0.04%, respectively. The approximate nutritional composition of beverage was carbohydrate, 2.70%, crude protein, 6.00%, crude ash, 0.20%, and crude fat, 0.10%. And developed beverage contained essential amono acids and minerals (p, Ca, K, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn). Heart rates, lactic acid, glucose, creatinine, LDH, GOT, GPT and lipid concentratios in blood were decreased after taking the beverage with Artemisia capillaris for 6 weeks, both in stable condition and after exercise. Since the athletes who participated In our research were doing aerobic exercise regularly, we judged that this result was formed not only by aerobic exercise, but also by the function of developed beverage with Artemisia capillaris the athletes took for 6 weeks. We believe that taking the beverage regularly will help the improvement of the public health and the athleticism of the athletes. We hope that this result will be used as the basic resource in developing of the beverage with Artemisia capillaris in the near future.

  • In Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv 16 adenylyl cyclase (AC) genes have been identified, while 10 AC genes have been found in non-pathogenic Mycobacterium smegmatis. Expression of 6 AC genes (MSMEG_0218, MSMEG_3243, MSMEG_3780, MSMEG_4279, MSMEG_4477, and MSMEG_6154) among 10 AC genes in M. smegmatis was increased when M. smegmatis was subjected to hypoxic growth conditions. On the other hand, only MSMEG_3780 and MSMEG_4279 were slightly induced in the presence of NO. The cAMP levels in cells and culture media were 450- and 9.8-fold increased, respectively, when M. smegmatis was grown under hypoxic conditions relative to those grown aerobically. Intracellular levels of cAMP were increased 5.8-fold on the exposure to NO. The DevSR two-component system is known to be involved in the induction of many genes whose expression is induced under hypoxic conditions and in the presence of NO. Expression of 6 hypoxically induced AC genes was observed to be induced in a devR deletion mutant grown under hypoxic conditions, indicating that the induction of the 6 AC genes under hypoxic conditions is independent of the DevSR two-component system. In order to identify a trans-acting regulatory element that is pertinent in the hypoxic induction of MSMEG_3780, ligand-fishing analysis was performed using the upstream DNA of MSMEG_3780 and MSMEG_5136 protein was identified.

  • It is expected that the typical lifestyle of the future will be transformed into an opulent and comfortable existence as the quality of life improves due to the increase in household income and reduction in working hours. In the meantime, as the standard of living becomes increasingly more comfortable and plentiful, the toll on physical health becomes magnified as a result of obesity and insufficient exercise caused by super nutrition and change in labor conditions (from physical labor to mental labor). This has instigated a deep awareness in fitness on the part of many people, forcing them to recognize the significance of daily exercise and physical activity. The high annual growth rate in the fitness and athletic apparatus market, which is more than 20%, is attributed to this phenomenon. The Elliptical Cross Trainer(ECT), which has drawn wide attention recently, is a non-impact athletic apparatus that not only promotes exercise of the upper body parts in such sports as skiing but also the exercise of lower parts of the body on a treadmill. It is a type of cross training athletic gear that has been developed for aerobic exercise throughout the entire body. It has already formed a market as big as that of the treadmill in Europe, America, etc. Recently, its demand is growing sharply in the Korean markets as well as those in Northeast Asian countries, Despite such demand increase and expansion, since most of the expensive ECTs are exclusively supplied by suppliers in only a few advanced countries, localization of the ECT is urgently required in order to enhance competitiveness of Korean manufacturers and to expand the market. This paper introduces the process and results of a design-engineering cooperative study that was peformed for the development of the ECT.
