  • The purpose of this study was the effect of complex training of obese men in their 30s on inflammatory markers and homocysteine, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The subjects consisted of obese men (n=12) with the body fat ratio of 25% or above in their mid 30s who had no medical conditions and can follow the exercise routine required by this study. To achieve the purpose of this study measured the maximum oxygen intake (VO2max) and 1RM of 5 kinds of machine(bench press, lat pull down, arm curl, leg press, squat) as a preliminary test; based on the results, performed 8 weeks complex training (aerobic exercise + weight training); and then analyzed the variation in body composition (body weight, body fat and BMI), blood inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNF-α and CRP), and homocysteine between before and after training. The results exhibited that 8 weeks complex training reduced weight, body fat and BMI significantly (p<0.01) and also reduced inflammatory marker CRP and homocysteine, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, significantly (p<0.05). In conclusion, 8 weeks complex training confirmed the variation in body composition, and this variation has a positive effect on the inflammatory marker and the risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different types of exercise training on ẞ-Amyloid, Brain-Derived Nerurotrophic Factor(BDNF) and cognitive function in mice with Diabetes Mellitus Group(DM.G). 24 male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to the control (C.G. n = 6) and Diabetes Mellitus Group(DM.G. n = 18) groups. After the Diabetes Mellitus induction period, the DM group was subdivided into DM.G. + sedentary (DM.G., n = 6), DM.G. + endurance exercise (A.G, n = 6), and DM.G. + resistance exercise (R.G., n = 6). The A.G. and R.G performed treadmill and ladder climbing exercises 5 times per week for 8 weeks, respectively. After 8 weeks the results are as follows: ẞ-Amyloid showed higher levels of DM.G. than in A.G., R.G., and C.G., but was not statistically significant(p>.05). BDNF was significantly lower in DM.G. than in C.G., A.G., and R.G.(p <0.05). The Y-maze task performance for cognitive function was significantly lower in DM.G. than in C.G., A.G., and R.G.(p <0.05). These results predict that diabetes can negatively affect ẞ-Amyloid, BDNF and cognitive function. It can also be predicted that low-intensity exercise can positively improve ẞ-Amyloid, BDNF and cognitive function regardless of the type of exercise.

  • Among students of 'K' boarding high school, located in 'B' city, 32 students whose % body fat was 30% or above were divided into three groups - two exercise groups and one control group. They performed Combined Training - a mix of weight training (WT) and step box training (SBT) - for 65 min a day, 3 days a week, for 8 weeks in total. Group A performed WT 70-80%$RM{\times}3$ sets+SBT (RPE 11-13)${\times}1$ set, and group B performed WT 70-80%$RM{\times}1$ set+SBT (RPE 11-13)${\times}3$ sets to yield data on changes of body composition (Soft Lean Mass, SLM), %fat, WHR), HbA1c, and HOMA-IR. Paired t-test was used to process data within each group. Pre- and post experiment differences rates (%diff) were used to perform one-way ANOVA (Duncan test) for group comparisons. The conclusions derived are as follows. Regarding body composition, exercise groups showed an increase in SLM, but there was no such change in the control group. WHR decreased in group A, but increased in the control group. The % body fat decreased in both exercise groups, but increased in the control group. As for the group comparisons, SLM in group A showed a greater increase than in group B and the control group. WHR in groups A and B showed a greater decrease than the control group. The % body fat in groups A and B showed a greater decrease than the control group. The exercise groups showed a significant decrease in HOMA-IR, but the control group showed a significant increase in HOMA-IR. As for the group comparisons, groups A and B showed a greater decrease in HOMA-IR than the control group. The exercise groups showed a significant decrease in HbA1c, however, the control group showed no change in HbA1c. As for the group comparisons, group A showed a greater decrease in HbA1c than the control group. These results confirm that combined training is more effective in improving body composition and metabolic factors when it includes a high proportion of resistance training, rather than aerobic exercise. The results of the study suggest that it is advisable to set a high proportion of WT when deciding the intensity of combined training.

  • This study was performed to provide detailed and comprehensive information on inflammation-related blood indicators, joint range of motion, pain scale, and psychological indicators by patient characteristics by performing a 12-week home-based exercise program for ankylosing spondylitis patients. For the purpose of this study, 10 patients with ankylosing spondylitis were selected by age (30s vs. 40s vs. 50s), gender (male vs. female), and duration (less than 5 years vs. 5 years or more). The home-based exercise program was a combination of aerobic exercise and Pilates-based resistance exercise, and was performed 4 times a week for 12 weeks at an intensity of 50-70% of maximal heart rate (MHR). As a result, after 12 weeks of home-based exercise intervention, the blood C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration of patients with ankylosing spondylitis decreased (-35.6%, p=.002), and the blood inflammation level was improved, and each joint (hip, lumbar, cervical) improved mobility (p<.05). In addition, the bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI) was decreased by -67% (p=.001) and the visual analogue scale (VAS) was decreased by -64.8% (p=.001), stiffness and pain has been alleviated. In particular, as the degree of depression decreased by -65.5% (p=.001) and the degree of anxiety by -55.2% (p=.003), 12 weeks of home-based exercise improved not only physical changes but also psychological factors. On the other hand, there was no difference in exercise effect according to age, gender, and disease duration in ankylosing spondylitis patients (p>.05). These results suggest that the 12-week home-based exercise applied in this study can be an effective exercise program that can be universally used for ankylosing spondylitis patients regardless of patient characteristics.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a circuit aerobic exercise program positively affects pulmonary function and gait endurance in chronic stroke patients. METHODS: Twenty-four chronic stroke patients were allocated equally and randomly to an experimental group (n=12) or a control group (n=12). All participants received 60 minutes of comprehensive rehabilitation treatment, the experimental group additionally performed a circuit aerobic exercise for 30 minutes, while the control group additionally performed a general aerobic exercise, i.e., gait training on the treadmill for 30 minutes. These 30-minute exercise sessions were held three times per week for six weeks. Pulmonary function was assessed using forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV), and gait endurance was assessed using the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). RESULTS: In the both groups, FVC, FEV1, MVV, and 6MWT were significantly increased after training. Members of the experimental group showed significant improvements in FVC, FEV1, and MVV, and significantly greater improvements than controls (p<.05). However, 6MWT improvements were not significantly different in the two groups (p>.05). CONCLUSION: The devised circuit aerobic exercise program offers an effective rehabilitation aerobic exercise for improving pulmonary function and gait endurance in patients after chronic stroke.

  • This study was a secondary data analysis conducted to identify the factors affecting the health-related quality of life according to the stress perception level of middle-aged. Data from the 2014, 2016, and 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used, and 7,995 people aged 40-64 who answered the level of stress perception were targeted. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ver.25.0, and the significance level was set to .05. As a result of the study, in the feeling less stressed group, household income level, education level, frequency of dinning out, drinking amount at a time, smoking, subjective health, and depression were found to be significant influencing factors, and the explanatory power was 21.4% (p < .001). In the feeling a lot stressed group, household income level, education level, living with a spouse, weekly breakfast frequency, aerobic physical activity, smoking, subjective health, and depression were significant influencing factors, and the explanatory power was 38.7% (p < .001). Therefore, it is suggested to consider each influencing factor in the middle-aged stress reduction intervention.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the effectiveness of mechanical horseback riding exercise training for cardiopulmonary responses in 26 healthy adults (male 14, female 12) and suggest its clinical applicability. Exercise was performed using a mechanical horseback riding machine, JOBA(R) (Panasonic Electric Works, Osaka, Japan) and riding movement speed was increased from level 2 (0.73Hz), to 4 (0.9Hz), to 6 (1.03Hz), to 8 (1.2Hz), to 9 (1.3Hz) and maintained 3minutes in each level. Heart rate, blood pressure, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) were measured by respiratory gas analysis system (TruOne 2400, Parvo Medics, USA) and exercise tolerance test system(Q Stress, Cardiac Science, USA). To measure exercise intensity, metabolic equivalent (MET) were measured and percent of Heart rate reserve (%HRR), percent of peak heart rate (%peak HR) and calorie consumption were calculated. The results were analysed by SPSS 18.0. We found that the exercise intensity of mechanical horseback riding exercise using JOBA(R) for 15 minutes is moderate in healthy adult who received pre-training.

  • Ergogenic aids are substances, devices, and practices that enhance an individual's energy use and production, and recovery from fatigue. L-carnitine increases enhance performance and aerobic capacity by stimulating lipid oxidation in muscle cells during long term exercise. L-carnitine is a well known and widely used ergogenic aid. In the present study, the effect of L-carnitine at concentrations of 100 nM, 1 μM, 10 μM, and 100 μM on the amplitude of field potential in rat cardiac muscle slices was measured using multi-channel extracellular recording (MED 64) system. In the present result, L-carnitine was shown to enhance field potential as a does-dependent manner. The increasing effect of the L-carnitine on field potential was not affected by application of the glibenclamide, an ATP-dependant K+ channel antagonist. The increasing effect of L-carnitine on field potential was suppressed by application of the diazoxide, an ATP-dependent K+ channel agonist. Present data show that L-carnitine potentiates field potentials by inhibition on ATP-dependant K+ channel in cardiac muscles. The enhancing effect of the L-carnitine on the field potential in cardiac muscles can be suggested as one of the underlying mechanism of ergogenic aid of the L-carnitine.
