Voltammetric behavior of some light lanthanide ions (La$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, Sm$^{3+}$, and Eu$^{3+}$) in various supporting electrolytes has been investigated by several electrochemical techniques. The peak potentials and the peak currents, their dependency on the concentration, temperature and pH effects, the reversibility of the electrode reactions are described. The reduction of La$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M lithium chloride proceeds by a three-electron change directly to the metallic state (Ln$^{3+}$ + 3e- → Ln$^0$) and charge transfer is totally irreversible. However, the reduction of Sm$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M tetramethylammonium iodide and Eu$^{3+}$ in 0.1 M lithium chloride proceeds in two stages (Ln$^{3+}$ + e- → Ln$^{2+}$ and Ln$^{2+}$ + 2e- → Ln$^0$). At pH values lower than ca.4 the hydrated lanthanide species (Ln(OH)$^{2+}$) reduced before the lanthanide ions (Ln$^{3+}$) due to the catalytic effect of hydrogen ions, and peak current increase with in the order Eu$^{3+}$ < Sm$^{3+}$ < Nd$^{3+}$ < Pr$^{3+}$ < La$^{3+}$ in differential pulse polarography. Some representative plots of $i_{pc}V^{-1/2} (proportional to current function) vs. V show considerable influence of hydrogen ion/lanthanide ion concentration in cyclic voltammetry. It is shown that a reaction of lanthanide ions with proton and/or water and catalytic reaction is enhanced at lower pH and at decreased lanthanide ion concentration.
Studies have been carried out on the fabrication of PPy/GC and PPy/Pt electrode modified with polypyrrole film and determination of Cr(VI) by using 3-electrode system with modified electrodes. Modified electrodes were able to easily fabricated by cyclic voltammetry scanned from +1.0V to -1.0V(vs. Ag/AgCl) at 50 mV/sec. Film thickness could be controlled at same condition by the number of cycling up to 26 times. Reduction behaviour of Cr(VI) at PPy/GC electrode could be seen at wide potential ranges from +0.6V to -0.5V(vs. Ag/AgCl), and maximum reduction peak potential of the ion was observed at -0.25V(vs.Ag/AgCl). Calibration graph at its potential was linear from 0.1 ppm to 80.O ppm. Slope factor and relative coefficient were 1.75 mA/ppm and 0.998, respectively. Reduction behaviour of Cr(VI) at PPy/Pt electrode was similar to PPy/GC electrode, Calibration graph was linear from l.0 ppm to 60.0 ppm. Slope factor and relative coefficient were 0.5mA/ppm and 0.923, respectively. But PPy/GC modified electrode had about 3 times higher sensitivity than PPy/Pt modified electrode. Reduction behaviour of Cu(II), As(IlI), Pb(II), and Cd(II) couldn't be seen at PPy/GC electrode,Its metals had not lnterfered with Cr (VI) determination.
The resistance curves (R-curves) for 381 m crack extension of CLWL-DCB specimens had been determined. The average velocities of the crack extension measured with strain gages were 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec. The measured rotation angle of the notch faces showed the existence of the singularity at least before 171 and 93 mm crack extensions for the 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec crack velocities, respectively. The maximum slopes of the R-curves occurred between 25 and 89 ㎜ crack extensions for 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity and between 51 and 127 ㎜ crack extensions for 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity During the maximum slopes of the R-curves, the micro-crack localization can be expected, and faster crack velocity may form longer micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing zones. The fracture resistance of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity reached a roughly constant maximum value of 143 N/m at 152 ㎜ crack extension, while that of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity increased continuously to 245 N/m at 254 ㎜ crack extension and then decreased to the value of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity. The R-curve of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity was similar to that of the small size three-point bend test, and it showed that small size specimen or fast crack velocity could cause more brittle behavior.
The needs for high strength structural materials have recently increased, because construction and cost efficiencies are demanded by the costumers. But, the use of high strength reinforcing bars requires longer development and splice lengths compared to normal strength bars. This restriction may cause reduction in construction efficiency and require more complicated details. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the bond strength on the rib shape of reinforcing bars to decrease development and splice lengths of high strength reinforcements. Total of 5 simple beam specimens were tested, and the main test variable was a rib shape of reinforcing bars. Test data was analyzed in the viewpoint of bond strength, load-deflection relationship, and crack pattern. Test results indicated that the bond strength of high relative rib area reinforcing bars increased up to 11% compared to normal strength reinforcements. And the improved rib shape reinforcements, which were formed with high and low height rib, increased the bond strength up to 23% even though the relative rib area was same as the high relative rib area reinforcements. Serviceability performances such as deflection number of cracking, and maximum crack width were similar in all specimens, so it is safe to conclude that the improved rib shape reinforcements can be applied to the structural members.
The purposes of this study are, 1) to explore the factors related to the family caregivers' preferences for service utilization both of the community-based welfare and health-care services, and 2) to examine the reasons why not want to use services analyzing a survey data obtained from family caregivers(n=1,000). Anderson and Newman's Behavior model was employed to examine the factors related to the preferences for service utilization. The main results are as follows. 1) Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that predisposing factor(such as age and relations with frail elderly) and enabling factor(such as economic status, secondary caregiver, informal informational support provider, etc) were significant predictor for caregivers' preference for service utilization. Contrary to an expectation, needs factor was negatively related to the preference for service. More specifically, the more they have service needs, the less they show their willingness to use community-based service both in welfare and health-care services except for care education program. 2) Caregiver identified 'family caregiving consciousness'(family should take care of frail elderly, elderly dislike be taken care of) as an important reason not want to use community services next to financial factor. These findings have several implications for policy making especially for 'public long-term care insurance' which was planned to start in 2007.
Characteristics of minimum fluidization velocity and pressure fluctuations were investigated in an annular fluidized bed whose diameter was 0.102 m and 2.0 m in height. Effects of gas velocity, particle size and bed temperature on the minimum fluidization velocity and pressure fluctuations were examined. The values of minimum fluidization velocity obtained by means of three different methods were very similar each other. The correlation dimension could be a quantitative parameter for expression the resultant complex behavior of gas and solid mixture in the annular fluidized bed. The value of correlation dimension increased with increasing gas velocity, fluidized particle size and temperature in the bed. The minimum fluidization velocity could be determined by means of correlation dimension of pressure fluctuations as well as pressure drop in the bed and standard deviation of pressure fluctuations. The minimum fluidization velocity increased with increasing particle size but decreased with increasing bed temperature in annular fluidized beds. The minimum fluidization velocity was well correlated in therms of correlation dimension as well as operating variables within experimented conditions of this study.

Optimal design method of nonlinear damping system for seismic response control of adjacent structures is studied in this paper. The objective functions of the optimal design are defined by structural response and total amount of the dampers. In order to obtain a solution minimizing two mutually conflicting objective functions simultaneously, multi-objective optimization technique based on genetic algorithm is adopted. In addition, stochastic linearization method is embedded into the multi-objective framework to efficiently estimate the seismic responses of the adjacent structures interconnected by nonlinear hysteretic dampers without performing nonlinear time-history analyses. As a numerical example to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, 20-story and 10-story buildings are considered and MR dampers of which hysteretic behaviors vary with the magnitude of the input voltage are considered as nonlinear hysteretic damper interconnecting two adjacent buildings. The proposed approach can provide the optimal number and capacities of the MR dampers, which turned out to be more economical than the uniform distribution system while maintaining similar control performance. The proposed damper system is verified to show more stable performance in terms of the pounding probability between two adjacent buildings. The applicability of the proposed method to the design problem for optimally placing semi-active control system is examined as well.

For a seismic design or performance evaluation of a structure, an experimental investigation on a scale model of the structure or numerical analysis based on the finite element model is considered. Regarding the numerical analysis, a three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed if a high accuracy of the results is required, while a sensitivity or fragility analysis which uses huge seismic ground motions leads to the use of a lumped-mass stick model. The conventional modeling technique to build the lumped-mass stick model calculates the amount of the lumped mass by considering the geometric shape of the structure, like a tributary area. However, the eigenvalues of the conventional model obtained through such a calculation are normally not the same as those of the actual structure. In order to overcome such a deficiency, in this study, a new lumped mass stick model is proposed. The model is named the "frequency adaptive-lumped-mass stick model." It provides the same eigenvalues and similar dynamic responses as the actual structure. A non-prismatic column is considered as an example, and its natural frequencies as well as the dynamic performance of the new lumped model are compared to those of the full-finite element model. To investigate the damping effect on the new model, 1% to 5% of the critical damping ratio is applied to the model and the corresponding results are also compared to those of the finite element model.
Bead type super-absorbent resins to be used for release-control were prepared by modification of the inverse suspension polymerization, and their physical properties were characterized. Acrylic acid and acrylamide were used as monomers, and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide was used as crosslinker, controlling the viscosity of monomer solution by adding hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). SEM studies of the synthesized beads verified that the bead surfaces had many pores with their diameters of several tens nm. The bead sizes were in the range of $500{\sim}3000{\mu}m$, depending on the viscosity of the monomer solution. Both absorbent amount and absorbent rate of the beads were inversely proportional to the bead size, and the maximum water absorbent amount of 1 g beads was determined to be ca. 170~200 g for 5 hrs. The absorbent rate was also dependent on pH change of the aqueous solution, exhibiting the maximum rate in pH ranging from 5 to 11. The absorbent rate decreased as the concentration of salt (NaCl and $MgCl_2$) or ethanol and ethylene glycol increased. Release time of the water absorbed into the bead resins was 700 hrs, confirming the usefulness of the resin for the good release-control materials.
Cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) gamered increasing interest for their remarkable reinforcement of polymer composites. In this work, we were to produce cellulose whiskers from commercially available microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) by acid hydrolysis with sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Electron microscopy found that each acid produced sililar cellulose crystals of diameters ranging from 20 to 30 nm and lengths ranging from 200 to 300 nm. Moreover, all samples showed remarkable flow birefringence through crossed polarization filters. Conductometric titration of CNW suspensions revealed that the sulfuric acid treated sample had a surface charge of between 140.00 mmol/kg and 197.78 mmol/kg due to sulfate groups, while that of the hydrochloric acid treated sample was undetectable. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal decomposition temperature and apparent activation energy (evaluated by Broido's method at different stages of thermal decomposition.) of H1-CNW - prepared by hydrolysis with hydrochloric acid - was higher than those of S1-CNW and S2-CNW - prepared by hydrolyzing MCC with sulfuric acid.
