A cycloaliphatic epoxy/acidic anhydride system incorporating short carbon fibers (SCF) and short glass fibers (SGF) was fabricated and thermal/mechanical properties were characterized. At low filler content both SCF- and SGF-reinforced composites showed a similar decrease in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), measured by a thermomechanical analyzer, with increasing loadings, above which SCF became more effective than SGF at reducing the CTE. Experimental CTE data for the SCF-reinforced composites is best described by the rule of mixtures at lower SCF contents and by the Craft-Christensen model at higher SCF contents. Storage modulus (E') at $30^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$ was greatly enhanced for short fiber-filled composites compared to unfilled specimens, Scanning electron microscopy of the fracture surfaces indicated that the decreased CTE and the increased E' of the short fiber-reinforced composites resulted from good interfacial adhesion between the fibers and epoxy matrix.

In this paper, we developed a theoretical model which is able to predict the tensile strength and elastic modulus of hybrid composites reinforced by two types of randomly distributed discontinuous reinforcements. For this, we considered two known models; One is a prediction model based on the assumption that the composite is reinforced by two types of well aligned continuous reinforcements. The other is a statistical model for the composite which is reinforced by only one type of randomly distributed discontinuous reinforcements. In order to evaluate the validity of accuracy of our prediction model, we measured the strength and elastic modulus of polypropylene hybrid composite reinforced by talc and short glass fiber. We found that the present model drastically enhances the accuracy of strength prediction compared to an existing model, and predicts the elastic modulus within the same order with experimentally measured values.

In this paper, experimental tests and theoretical studies were carried out to evaluate the tensile behavior of the sprayed FRP composite with chopped glass fiber. For this, a series of tensile strength tests with various strain rates were conducted on the specimens of the matrix and sprayed FRP composite. Sprayed FRP composite contained chopped glass fibers with fiber length of 15mm and a specific volume fraction of fibers of 25 %. An inverse simulation was conducted to simulate the strain rate sensitivity based on the present experimental data of the epoxy resin. The simulated viscosity value is adapted to the micromechanics-based viscoelastic damage model(Yang et al., 2012), and the overall tensile behavior of sprayed FRP composites is predicted. It was seen from the comparative study between present experimental data and predication results that the proposed methodology can be used to predict the viscoelastic behavior of the sprayed FRP composite.
This paper deals with anisotropic property and structural analysis for short fiber reinforced plastic composites manufactured by the injection molding process. The common approach for modeling this type of material is the consideration of the material as homogenous and isotropic. However, the common isotropy approach often results in unexpected failure. To overcome this, new structure analysis methodology was developed in order to consider fiber orientation effect using injection mold flow analysis and Halpin-Tsai equations for unidirectional composites and taking an orientation average. The numerical predictions are compared to experimental data for tensile specimen. The predicted mechanical properties agree well with experimental data for fiber orientation and weld line effect. The analysis system was also applied to an automobile part. The proposed anisotropic model predicted different mechanical properties by position of the part and different mechanical performance of the part was changed according to injection gate position.

The main purpose of this study is to develop a sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method, which is a new technique for strengthening the existing concrete structures by mixing one of the carbon or glass chopped fibers and one of the epoxy or vinyl ester resins with high-speed compressed air in open air and randomly spraying the mixture onto the concrete surface. At present, the sprayed FRP repair and strengthening method using the epoxy resin has not been fully discussed. In order to investigate the material property of the sprayed FRP, this study carried out tensile tests of the material specimens, which were changed with the combinations of various variables including the length of chopped fiber and the mixture ratio of chopped fiber and resin. These variables were set to have the equal material strength, compared with that of one layer of the FRP sheet. As a result, the optimal length of glass and carbon chopped fibers was fumed out to be 38 mm, and the optimal mixture ratio between chopped fiber and resin was also turned out to be 1 : 2 from each variable. And also, the thickness of the sprayed FRP to have the equal strength to one layer of the FRP sheet was finally calculated. In is study, a series of experiments were carried out to evaluate the strengthening effects of flexural beams, shear beams and damaged beams strengthened with the sprayed FRP method, respectively. The results revealed that the strengthening effects of the flexural and shear specimens were reasonably similar to those of the FRP sheet, and the developed Sprayed FRP technique is able to be used as a strengthening scheme of existing RC building.

Friction and wear characteristics of short fiber reinforced and particulate filled composites were investigated experimentally. Two kinds of fiber composites, chopped graphite fiber reinforced PAI(polyamide-imide) and glass fiber reinforced PAI, and a particulate composite, TiO$_{2}$ powder filled PAI, were selected for the friction and wear test since these are important engineering materials based on a new high temperature engineering plastic. All the specimens were cut into proper size for cylinder-on-plate type wear test. Frictional forces were measured by employing a load transducer and wear rates were calculated by measuring weight loss during wear test. The experimental results are reported in this paper and carefully discussed to explain the friction and wear behavior qualitatively. The frictional behavior is interpreted by considering four basic friction components which are believed to the genesis of friction and the wear behavior is explained by applying delamination theory of wear.

Although Korea is a top market sharing and world leading producer and developer of flat panel display devices, relevant recycling technology is not up to her prestigious status. Besides, most of the waste glass arising from flat panel displays is currently land-filled. The present paper mainly reviews on development of recycling systems for waste TFT-LCD glass from end-of-life LCD TVs and monitors and TFT-LCD process waste of crushed glass particles with target end uses of raw material for high strength concrete pile and glass fibers, respectively. Waste LCD glass was recycled to fabricate ingredients for high strength concrete piles with enhanced physical properties and spherical foam products. The waste LCD glass recycling technology is already developed to fabricate long and short fibers at commercial level. In view of these, future R & D on waste LCD glass materials is to be directed toward implementation of commercial materials recycling system therefrom.
In this study, we fabricated jute fiber reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) composite in the form of sandwich panel structure which includes core foam of chopped jute fiber reinforced PLA and outer skin layer of continuous glass fiber reinforced PLA. Flexural properties of the composite were assessed for different jute fiber weight fractions. Density of the core foam ranged from 0.31 to 0.67 $g/cm^3$ and void content fraction 0.51 to 0.71. The maximum flexural strength was 92.7 MPa at 12.5 wt.% of jute fiber content, and the maximum flexural modulus was 7.58 GPa at 30.0 wt.%. Cost analysis was also conducted. The cost to enhance the flexural strength of the applied structure was estimated to be $0.010USD/m^3/MPa$ for 12.5 wt.% fiber content.
