  • Combined sewer overflow (CSOs) is a primary diffuse source degrading water quality of urban streams. In this study, CSOs caused by 5 different rainfall events at an urban watershed located in Daejeon city were monitored for the indicator microorganism concentrations. Event mean concentration (EMC) of the indicator microorganisms were: total coliform = $2.46{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; fecal coliform = $1.01{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; E.coli = $5.20{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$; and Fecal Streptococci = $6.08{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$. In addition, coliform concentrations were well correlated with suspended solid concentrations and the first flush effects were identified. Settling tests were carried out to estimate removal rate of indicator organisms by sedimentation from CSOs. As microorganisms are discharged in association with suspended solid, ten minutes of settlement can lower 44% of indicator microorganism leading.

  • Objective of this study was to characterize the particle size distribution(PSD) and quantify the pollutant concentration in highway runoff. Runoff samples during two rainfall events at four road sites in Gyunggi-Do were collected and PSD and associated pollutant distribution was quantified. Also, rainfall amount, flow rate, and other pollutants in samples were analyzed. PSDs in each sample were analyzed and compared with temporal trends of other pollutants. High partial event mean concentrations(PEMC) of particulates were observed at the beginning of runoff and rapid decrease thereafter. Other pollution parameters such as turbidity, TSS, BOD, TN, and TP also have similar temporal runoff trend with the PEMC. Especially PEMC was well correlated with total suspended solids(TSS) and turbidity. Cu, Pb, Zn had high concentration both runoff and sediment. Heavy metals in sediment were strongly bound to fine particles that have the large surface area-to-volume ratios.

  • This study was investigated to characterize the stormwater runoff pollutant materials from the urban area mixed with industrial area. Almost the similar rainfall pattern is shown during the 5 years, and the yearly precipitation was 5.2~6.6 mm. The first flushing effect during the early-stage rainfall-run off was observed in some events. EMC ranges are 19.3~39.9 mg/L for BOD, 45.2~190 mg/L for CODcr, 67.2~351 mg/L for TSS, 3.6~10.3 mg/L for TN, 1.2~2.5 mg/L for TP. Heavy metal are not detected except Zn which is observed at only one event. The particle size was distributed to 10 ${\mu}m$ at the 3% weight volume and the 50% cumulative weight percent was shown at 12 ${\mu}m$.

  • The stormwater runoff from rest areas in highways are known as more polluted compared to highways because of more vehicle activities. This study is performed to find pollutant characteristics in the rest areas in the magnitude of statistical pollutant concentrations during storms. Washoff characteristics of pollutants from rest areas by monitoring of rainfall, runoff rate and runoff samples were evaluated. High concentrations of pollutants in runoff were observed at the beginning of runoff and rapid decrease thereafter, indicating that first-flush effects are clearly occurred. Event Mean Concentrations(EMCs) of TSS, COD, TN, and TP are estimated to be in the range of 31.04-127.11mg/L, 35.5-369.5mg/L, 2.62-9.86 mg/L, and 0.53-1.96mg/L, respectively. Heavy metals in runoff showed relatively high values, possibly due to the abrasion of brake pad or tire while cars are slowly moving for parking. EMCs of total Pb, total Cu, and total Ni are in the range of $1206-16293{\mu}g/L$, $237-7906{\mu}g/L$, and $53-6372{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Pollutant loading per rest area calculated by using EMC, flowrate and target area is also described for each pollutant.

  • Seven heavy metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) were continuously analyzed for twenty rainfall events in 2017~2018 in an urban basin. The overall and dynamic correlations between runoff characteristics and heavy metal concentrations were examined. The peak metal concentration generally appeared in the initial runoff but found to be delayed when the rainfall intensity was low. The rainfall duration had no relationship with either heavy metal concentrations or their total mass. Dynamics of heavy metal mass (load), with the exception of Cu and Zn, showed strong correlation with the 30 minute rainfall intensity (0.60~0.88) and runoff volume (0.74~0.89). While event mean concentration (EMC) showed positive correlation (0.54~0.73) with antecedent dry days (ADD), no significant relationship was found between runoff volume and pollutant concentration. This implies that the pollutants built up on the surface during dry days are washed off even with low rainfall energy. The dynamics of heavy metal and TSS concentrations showed good correlation (0.68~0.87). This result shows that the metals are transported along with solid particles as adsorbate in surface runoff. Regular street sweeping will reduce significant amount of heavy metal loads in urban surface runoff.

  • The urban is possessing of various landuses such as commercial, industrial, residential and official areas. All of these landuses is including the paved areas that are roads and parking lots. The NPS (nonpoint sources) pollutants are generally originated from pavement areas in urban by human activities. Especially the roads are stormwater intensive landuses because of high vehicle activities and high imperviousness. The main NPS pollutants from roads are particulates and metals from vehicles and pavements. The Korea MOE (Ministry of Environment) is developing the NPS control program to reduce the NPS pollutants from the basins. However, it is not easy to control the NPS because it has high uncertainty by characteristics of rainfalls and watersheds. Therefore, this research was conducted on characterizing the runoff and providing mean EMC from roads. The monitoring were performed for total 16 rainfall events from a road in Youngin City since 2006. The results show that the TSS is highly correlated with other pollutant parameters. The statistical regression models using TSS EMC have been developed to easily determine the EMC of other pollutant parameters.

  • Water quality samples were taken for every two hours whenever runoff occurred by rainfall to investigate concentration variations of T-N, T-P and SS during runoff process from a paddy field. The difference between the highest concentration in a runoff event and flow weighted mean concentration for T-N, T-P, SS placed between 3.07∼40.16%, 11.44∼60.80%, and 15.11∼64.5%, respectively. The difference between the lowest concentration in event and event mean concentration for T-N, T-P, SS ranged between -7.24∼-31.84%, -11.59∼-47.86%, and -5.21∼-36.20%, respectively. The relationship between runoff and mass load was derived for each storm event using observed data. The relationship between runoff and mass load showed linear relationship regardless of water quality constituents and rainfall amount. The results suggested that relationship between T-N and T-P loads and runoff should be prepared separately in considering of fertilization effect and seasonal conditions. The relationship between SS and runoff should be made to reflect seasonal conditions and tillage effect.

  • Stream flow and water quality were measured and analyzed with respect to flow-weighted mean concentrations (FWMCs) of 21 rainfall events from a forested watershed (Forest Research Watershed: FRW) and two mixed watersheds of agriculture and forest (YuPo-Ri Watershed: YPW and WolGog-ri Watershed: WGW) located in the middle of the North Han River basin. The monitoring of each watershed was one year and conducted between 2004 and 2006. YPW showed more intensive agricultural practices than WGW where traditional practices were common. The average of the 21 FWMCs were in the order of YPF>WGW>FRW and were significantly different from each other at the level of 0.05. It was shown that the land use with intensive agricultural practices produced and discharged more NPS pollutants than that with traditional practices and forest. Specially, SS concentrations from the mixed watersheds were significantly higher than those from FRW. Influencing factors on runoff were analyzed rainfall and watershed area. And rainfall intensity was greater impact on runoff than daily rainfall. Measured water quality indices were shown positive correlations among them in general. However, no significant correlation was shown between COD and nutrients(T-N and T-P).

  • Much of domestic city is served by combined sewer system rather than separate sanitary or storm sewers. During wet weather, when the volume of sanitary sewage and storm water entering the combined sewers exceeds the system capacity, the system is designed to overflow at several designated CSOs. The objective of this research is to have grasp of characteristics of combined sewer runoff and to evaluate efficiently the intercepted volume of CSOs. During the wet weather in first rainfall, SS load at each site H-1, H-2, and H-3 were 600kg/event, 370kg/event, and 289kg/event, SS load at each site in second rainfall were 216kg/event, 113kg/event, and 37.2kg/event. EMCs at each site were 702mg/L, 816mg/L, 861mg/L in first rainfall and 99.9mg/L, 161.9mg/L, 103.6mg/L in second rainfall, respectively. First flush coefficients b at each site were 0.237, 0.166, and 0.151.
