The fire extinguishing performance of hybrid nozzle systems is improved by injecting an extinguishing agent concentrically into the target site and, in this study, water mist is used as a water curtain to confine the droplets of the agent. In this study, we numerically investigated the effect of the foundation angle and injection pressure on the performance of a hybrid nozzle by evaluating the mean radius of the volume fractions of the agent and water mists. An experiment involving a water mist nozzle was carried out to validate the numerical method and then the droplet behaviors, e.g., stochastic collision, coalescence and breakup, were calculated with 2-way interaction Discrete Particle Modeling (DPM) in the steady state for the hybrid nozzle system. The mean radius of the water mists increased by about 40 %, whereas that of the agent decreased by about 21 %, when the injection pressure was increased from 30 bar to 60 bar. In addition, the mean radius of the agent increased by about 24 % as the foundation angle of the hybrid nozzle head increased from $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. As a result, it can be inferred that the injection angle and pressure are important factors for hybrid water mist designs.

In these days, many countries carry out many renewable energy policies to increase the renewable energy portion and to reduce the GHG(Green House Gas). In Korea, RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standards) focused on over 500MW power producers is conducting. And they are using the bio-fuel oil to meet their RPS quota. The oil is a mixture of animal and vegetable fat or fatty acid ester of them and should satisfy some specifications to use the power generation such as viscosity, pour point, acid number. Depends on the raw materials, quality characteristics of power bio-fuel oil are changed. By adding the power bio-fuel oil, pour point, density, sulfur content and viscosity are decreased and acid number, iodine number, oxygen content are increased. In this study, we test the quality characteristic of power bio-fuel oil and the property changes by the blending ratio of power bio-fuel oil & conventional fuel oil.
In the events of a fire in the residential building, highly flammable polyurethane foam sofa produce toxic smokes. In this type of fire, the residents of the building can be gotten into the difficulties of evacuating from the fire places or may be to death due to a lot of hot toxic gases. In this study, CFD simulations were carried out to study the effects of the openings of stairwell on the fire characteristics of fire room and stairwell. Also, analysis of fire hazard based on the tenability limits of fire and FED(fractional effective dose) was performed to evaluate the life safety of the residents of the building. In the fire room, maximum temperature was about $290^{\circ}C$, maximum CO concentration was about 4,740 ppm, and the time to incapacitation of residents in fire room was about t=144 s. In the stairwell, temperature and CO concentration in the condition of openings to be open were even lower than those in it to be closed. Time to the tenability limit with respect to smoke visibility in the stairwell with openings, which was open, was shorter than that of it without openings to be open. It has been shown from this study that opening the stairwell openings is able to decrease the fire hazards to the life safety in the multi-story residential building fire.
This study applies 3-D N-S solver based on PBM (Porous Body Model), LED-WASS-3D ver 2.0 to directly analyze non-linear interaction of seawater-freshwater-coastal aquifer in order to simulate the seawater infiltration into coastal aquifer. This numerical simulation is the first trial in Korea, as well as unusual and new numerical analysis abroad. Firstly, to validate the applied numerical model, the validity and effectiveness was verified for the numerical model by comparing and considering it with the result of laboratory experiment for seawater-freshwater interface in coastal aquifer. And then it simulated the seawater infiltration into coastal aquifer considering the changed levels of seawater and groundwater in order to analyze the distribution characteristics of flow field and seawater-freshwater interface of coastal aquifer as the level difference between seawater and groundwater and rate of seawater level (${\Delta}h/h$) increased. In addition, the characteristics of seawater infiltration were analyzed from the vertical salinity in the coastal aquifer by ${\Delta}h/h$, which cannot be obtained from existing non-diffusion numerical models. Finally, it analyzed the effect of ${\Delta}h/h$ on the seawater infiltration distance in coastal aquifer, which was indexed.

The degradation of a tunnel drainage system leads to increases in pore water pressure around the tunnel and the lining stress, which results in affecting the tunnel stability. In the present study of the Namsan 3th tunnel, more than 30 year old tunnel, the effects of the drainage performance reduction due to drain hole clogging on the tunnel lining stability were investigated by examining pore water pressure distribution around the tunnel and the lining stresses through numerical analysis. Groundwater flow modeling on the Mt. Namsan region was done first and 3D seepage and coupled stress-pore water pressure finite element analysis were performed on the tunnel using the results of the groundwater flow modeling. The pore water pressure distribution and the tunnel lining stresses could be predicted using a drain hole outflow data measured in the tunnel site. This analysis method may be used to evaluate the current stability of old tunnels for which in most cases field investigations and related information are not readily available.

Ablative material in a rocket nozzle is exposed to high temperature combustion gas, thus undergoes complicated thermal/chemical change in terms of chemical destruction of surface and thermal decomposition of inner material. Therefore, method for conjugate analysis of thermal response inside carbon/phenolic material including rocket nozzle flow, surface chemical reaction and thermal decomposition is developed in this research. CFD is used to simulate flow field inside nozzle and conduction in the ablative material. A change in material density and a heat absorption caused by the thermal decomposition is considered in solid energy equation. And algebraic equation under boundary layer assumption is used to deduce reaction rate on the surface and resulting destruction of the surface. In order to test the developed method, small rocket nozzle is solved numerically. Although the ablation of nozzle throat is deduced to be higher than the experiment, shape change and temperature distribution inside material is well predicted. Error in temperature with experimental results in rapid heating region is found to be within 100 K.

This paper contains a new approach to blade section design method for marine propellers. The hydrodynamic characteristics of 2-D section are highly influenced by its geometrical parameters i.e., thickness and camber distributions and leading edge radius etc. To consider fully turbulent flow field near 2-D section. the finite volume method with k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulent model which solve Reynolds time averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is applied. In this study, O-type grid system that can provide many calculation points on blade surface is used. The results were compared with those of the experiment of NACA0012 to confirm the accuracy of the developed codes. The goal of this study is the development of a blade section with high efficiency and low drag. To achieve this, we carried out the tests of lift, drag and cavitation characteristics in cavitation tunnel. The results of experiment were compared with numerical results in order to validate the proposed blades design method. By comparing the numerical results with the experiments, we found that the new blade section, KH28 allows superior performance in efficiency and cavitation avoidance characteristics. We further investigated the blade section design method and an application study of this section, KH28 to apply to the marine propeller. In order to improve the accuracy of numerical results on prediction of lift and drag, we conclude here that the 2-layer boundary model must be used.

When we consider to develop a new harbor, the most important factor, we think, is the lowest water depth of waterway and approaching channel for safe navigation of vesse. The existing harbors have been being dredged to meet the international trend of jumbo sized vessels by adopting the new design criteria. As the dredged materials over the expected at the design level were common and there are still lack of land based reclamation area, we have no choice to discharge the dredged materials in open sea area. In this study, we analysed the behavior of discharged materials at the dumping area of offshore open sea, which were collected from the dredging work at the waterway in Busan New Port. We measured the tidal currents and analyzed the waters of dumping site after the dumping work. these were used to evaluate the numerical models. Suspended Solids(SS) were introduced to the diffusion model. Because of the characteristics of the dumping site, the speed of initial diffusion and settle down of the discharged materials was so fast. Therefore, we believe that the dumped materials do not cause a significant impact to the marine environment.
The effect of sub-grid turbulence and combustion models on the mean flame height in a heptane pool fire according to the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) version (5 and 6) based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was examined. The heat release rate for the fire simulation was provided through experiments performed under identical conditions and the predictive performance of the mean flame height according to FDS version was evaluated by a comparison with the existing correlation. As a result, the Smagorinsky and Deardorff turbulence models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively, had no significant effects on the mean flow field, flame shape and flame height. On the other hand, the difference in pool fire characteristics including the mean flame height was due mainly to the difference in the mixture fraction and Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) combustion models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively. Finally, compared to FDS 6, FDS 5 provided the predictive result of a significantly longer flame height and more consistent mean flame height than the existing correlation.
Purpose: X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a fatal, axonal demyelinating, neurodegenerative disease, and is caused by mutations the in ABCD1 (ATP-binding cassette transporter subfamily D member 1). Oxidative damage of proteins caused by very long chain fatty acid accumulating in X-ALD, is an early event in the neurodegenerative cascade. We evaluated valproic acid (VPA) as a possible option for oxidative damage in X-ALD. Method: We generated fibroblast of the childhood cerebral ALD from patient. We evaluated mRNA (ribonucleic acid) level of ABCD2 by real-time polymerase chain reaction, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels by flow cytometry. Results: VPA increased expression of ABCD2 in both control and ALD fibroblast. ABCD2 gene mRNA expression was increased 1.76 fold in normal fibroblasts, and 2.22 fold in the X-ALD fibroblasts. ROS levels were decreased in VPA treated X-ALD fibroblast, especially in treated with 1 mM of VPA. ROS levels revealed 13.7 in control fibroblast, on the other hand, 5.83 in X-ALD fibroblast treated with 1 mM of VPA. Conclusion: We propose VPA as a promising novel therapeutic approach in oxidant damage that warrants further clinical investigation in X-ALD.
