To improve the flow and mixing characteristics of marine SCR system, two different mixer including up-down and swirl type mixer were considered. The purpose of this study is to analyse turbulence intensity and uniformity index in detail and to improve the performance of SCR with respect to the mixer structure. The results showed that, the concentration uniformity index is improved by about 5% with the utilization of both mixers in the front of catalyst part. Although the RMS value and relative turbulence intensity increased after the up-down type mixer, it could observed that the value of two parameters decreased with the flow proceeding forward to the downstream. For the case of swirl type mixer, the decrease of RMS value and relative turbulence intensity were relatively smaller than that of up-down type mixer, and uniform distribution of relative turbulence intensity was observed. As a results, it could be concluded that the mixing effects and the distance of the two kinds of mixer were different.

A multi-perforated tube is generally installed between the muffler inlet and in front of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the integrated urea-SCR muffler system in order to disperse the urea-water solution spray uniformly and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, which would result in an increase nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) reduction efficiency and a decrease in the ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the internal flow characteristics were investigated analytically by using a general-purpose commercial software package. From the results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected the generation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst. To verify the analytical results, engine tests were carried out in the ESC and ETC modes. Results of these tests indicated that the larger flow model in the longitudinal direction showed the highest NOx reduction efficiency, which was a good agreement with the analytical results.

This study reports a numerical analysis of the internal flow characteristics of the integrated urea-SCR muffler system with the various geometries of the multi-perforated tube which is set up between the muffler inlet and in front of SCR catalysts. The multi-perforated tube is generally used to disperse uniformly the urea-water solution spray and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, resulting in the increased $NO_x$ reduction and decreased ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the velocity distributions in front of the SCR catalyst, which is ultimately quantified as the uniformity index, were investigated for the optimal muffler system design. The steady flow model was applied by using a general-purpose commercial software package. The air at the room temperature was used as a working fluid, instead of the exhaust gas and urea-water solution spray mixture. From the analysis results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected to the formation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst.

In this research, a numerical study was carried out on the mixing and flow characteristics of a vane-type static mixer for the reduction of $NO_x$ in the SCR systems from the diesel exhaust environments. The mixer was located at a distance of 57 times the pipe diameter away from the inlet. The analyses were performed by changing various parameters such as vane angles, blockage ratio, and location of the vane. Flow characteristics through the mixer were characterized by the uniformity index, swirl number, and pressure drop. The results show that uniformity index, pressure coefficient and swirl number are substantially influenced by the vane angle, blockage ratio and position of the vane of the mixer. In particular, the swirl number was increased when the vane was located near the pipe wall, or the vane angle was increased or scale was extended.
Emergency generators normally use diesel engines. The generators need to conduct weekly no-load operation inspections to ensure stable performance at emergency situations. In particular, the generators with large diesel engines mainly use rectangle type filter substrates. In order to minimize hazardous emissions generated by generators, optimizing the reduction efficiency through CFD analysis of flow characteristics of PM/NOX reduction system is important. In this study, we analyzed internal flow by CFD, which is difficult to confirm by experimental method. The main factors in our numerical study are the changes of flow uniformity and back pressure. Therefore, changes in flow characteristics were studied according to urea injector locations, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) diffuser angle, and filter porosity.

CFD(computational fluid dynamics) model is developed to simulate direct injection of ammonia gas phase from ammonia transporting materials into the SCR catalyst in the exhaust pipe of the engine with solid SCR. Configurations of one-hole and four-hole nozzle, circumferential type, porous tube type, and the effect of mixer configurations which commonly used in liquid injection of AdBlue are considered for complex geometries. Mal-distribution index related to concentration of ammonia gas, flow uniformity index related to velocity distribution, and pressure drop related to flow resistance are compared for different configurations of complex geometries at the front section of SCR catalyst. These results are used to design the injection system of ammonia gas phase for solid SCR of target vehicle.
The friction factor distribution of commercial pipes vary according to the pipe type and size. The present paper developed the friction factor equations of power law by analyzing the data reported by Colebrook(1938). Generally, pipe design requires pump power, discharge or pipe diameter for each condition given. Yoo(1995b) has suggested the basic equations for the explicit design of uniformly rough pipe and Yoo and Kang(1996) have refined those equations for the cases of uniformly rough pipe on a sloping bed with a pumping power. Furthermore Yoo and Kang(1997) have studied the design of commercial pipe for a general case. The approach gives relatively accurate solutions, but the equations obtained are rather complicated. In the present study two types of power law are developed for the friction factor of commercial pipe, and explicit forms of equations are generated by applying the power law friction factor equations for the simple design of commercial pipes.
An experimental study of jet impinging the non-isothermal heating surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate, represented by the Nusselt number. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 15,000 to 30,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~4.2$^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) is from 2 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter (H/D) is 6 or 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number, the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) and temperature gradient (dT/dr). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity. The wall jet is influenced by temperature gradient and the effect becomes more important at higher radii.

In this study, results from an experimental and numerical study of flow distribution in a close-coupled catalytic converter (CCC) are presented. The experiments were carried out using a glow measurement system. Flow distribution at the exit of the first monolith in the CCC was measured using a pitot tube under steady and transient flow conditions. Numerical analysis was done using a CF D code at the same test conditions, and the results were compared with the experimental results. Experimental results showed that the uniformity index of exhaust gas velocity decreases as Reynolds number increases. Under the steady flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe concentrates on a small region of the monolith. Under the transient flow conditions, flow through each exhaust pipe with the engine firing order interacts with each other to spread the flow over the monolith face. The numerical analysis results support the experimental results, and help explain the flow pattern in the entry region of the CCC.
