  • The moderator thermal flow in the CANDU calandria is generally complex and highly turbulent because of the interaction of the buoyancy force with the inlet jet inertia. In this study, the prediction performance of turbulence models for the accurate analysis of the moderator thermal flow are assessed by comparing the results calculated with various types of turbulence models in the commercial flow solver FLUENT with experimental data for the test vessel at Sheridan Park Engineering Laboratory (SPEL).Through this comparative study of turbulence models, it is concluded that turbulence models that include the source term to consider the effects of buoyancy on the turbulent flow should be used for the reliable prediction of the moderator thermal flow inside the CANDU calandria.

  • The present simulation model relies on a new approach of the heavy particle motion in a turbulent flow considering the time and space correlation to the Lagrangian point of view. The turbulent field is, here, assumed that its characteristic scales are random and follow a Poisson's distribution. Using this model, we have computed the trajectory of each particle, that is, its velocity and position at each time in order to study the dispersion of particles in a grid turbulent flow. The computed results have been compared to the corresponding experimental data. Due to the complex mechanism of turbulence and the theoretically and experimentally lacking information, we had to make some assumptions for simplifying the situation, but we have found the good agreement between simulated and measured results. In particular, the application of the present method on the Lagrangian correlation of particle provides an interesting alternative to the usual computational methods.

  • A steady prediction method is presented to compute dynamic damping coefficients for axisymmetric projectiles. Viscous flow analysis is essential to the steady method using a zero-spin coning motion in the inertial coordinate frame. The present method is applied to compute the pitching moment and the pitch-damping moment coefficients for the Army-Navy Spinning Rocket. The results are in good agreement with the parabolized Navier-Stokes data, range data, and unsteady prediction data. Predictions for Secant-Ogive-Cylinder configurations are performed to investigate effects of afterbody geometries. To investigate the geometrical effect and flow physics, the longitudinal developments of the coefficients are examined in detail.

  • Effect of electrostatic and inertial forces on the pre-charged particle deposition was theoretically and experimentally studied by introducing the inertia impactor subjected to an electric field. To derive the analytic solution, we assumed that a flow was an ideal stagnation flow, a particle had saturation charges, and the electric field within the test section was uniform. On the other hand, $Al_2O_3$ particle groups were used as the test particles, which mean sizes were $1{\mu}m$, $3{\mu}m$, and $5{\mu}m$. To measure the deposition efficiency, the light scattering method was used. The results showed that the deposition efficiency was minimized at a certain nozzle velocity as increasing the nozzle velocity, only if the electric force was applied. As the electric field strength increased, $Stk_{50}{^{1/2}}$ was decreased, and its decreasing rate was reduced with increasing the flow velocity. Moreover the existence of electric field was against the cut-off performance of the inertia impactor.

  • Particulate matter (PM) is designated as a group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO). In South Korea, the health threat caused by PM is the most serious level internationally. Therefore, in order to solve the urban PM problem, it is important to develop the technology that can control PM efficiently. In this study, CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was performed for PM pre-filter (type 1-3 with different PM collecting room) to develop a high-efficiency PM collecting device. The complex flow field and the local flow phenomenon inside the PM collecting device were understood with CFD simulation by changing the shape and size of the pre-filter. The PM removal performance can be described with flow rate through the device and PM removal efficiency. The type-1 pre-filter with 5x5 size collecting room was confirmed to have the highest efficiency. Based on the analysis results, the optimal type of pre-filter could be developed and it would be applied as an element technology included in the PM collecting device.

  • A growing bubble can be squeezed for water, and it will then encounter flow instability, which reverses toward upstream in straight micro-channels. To reduce the flow instability, a micro-channel that expands at the downstream end has been found to be effective. In the expanding area, a growing bubble will tend to move downstream because the net surface tension force of a vapor-liquid interface is inversely proportional to the local radius of curvature. We propose a static flow instability model and validate it experimentally. Moreover, we apply the local-instability parameter concept to the real design of a stable evaporative micro-channel with an expanding area. Based on the localinstability model, we establish a static design for stable expanding evaporative micro-channels.

  • In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are shown to compare well with the experimental results for the case of infinity Rossby number. The satisfactory agreement between the two results was possible when in the numerics the free surface was treated as a solid wall so that a no-slip condition was applied on the surface. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are not show to compare well with the experimental results for the case of the Rossby number 3. Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

  • in order to elucidate the characteristic of velocity distribution of the cavity air. Exploratory tests were conducted on an unloaded rolling radial tire operated at various speeds and inflation pressure. A hot-wire anemometer, rotating with the tire, was used to measure the flow velocity inside the tire cavity. Tow different types of experiments were performed ; one for the effects of rolling speed with constant inflation pressure, the other for the various cavity pressures with constant rolling speed. Experimental results are given as plots of the mean velocity distributions versus the distance from the rim. It is observed that the magnitude of mean velocity in the cavity air shows increasing natures with the increasing of the inflation pressures and rolling speeds.

  • For the purpose of development of high performance gasoline engine, the design technique of the 5-valve(3 intake valves) combustion chamber for a subcompact vehicle has been studied. 3 intake valves cylinder heads were designed by using a 3-dimension CAD program, and steady state flow experiments have been performed with these model. The 5-valve engines, which have larger valve opening areas, have larger intake flow rates and higher flow coefficient than the 4-valve engines. The effects of intake port design parameters of a 5-valve engine on the intake flow rate and bore size were studied, and the design guidelines for the 5-valve engine were established.
