A study in fault detection and diagnosis of induction motor by clustering and fuzzy fault tree (클러스터링과 fuzzy fault tree를 이용한 유도전동기 고장 검출과 진단에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, an algorithm of fault detection and diagnosis during operation of induction motors under the condition of various loads and rates is investigated. For this purpose, the spectrum pattern of input currents is used in monitoring the state of induction motors, and by clustering the spectrum pattern of input currents, the newly occurrence of spectrum patterns caused by faults are detected. For the diagnosis of the fault detected, a fuzzy fault tree is designed, and the fuzzy relation equation representing the relation between an induction motor fault and each fault type, is solved. The solution of the fuzzy relation equation shows the possibility of occurence of each fault. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) Using clustering algorithm by unsupervised learning, an on-line fault detection method unaffected by the characteristics of loads and rates is implemented, and the degree of dependency for experts during fault detection is reduced. (2) With the fuzzy fault tree, the fault diagnosis process become systematic and expandable to the whole system, and the diagnosis for sub-systems can be made as an object-oriented module.

  • This paper presents a characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation for railway transit in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The operating principle of a LIM(Linear induction motor) is identical to a rotary induction motor. Space-time variant magnetic fields are generated by the primary part across the airgap and induce the electro-motive force(EMF) in the secondary part, a conducting sheet. This EMF generates the eddy currents, which interact with the airgap flux and so produce the thrust force known as Loren's force. Even though the operating principal is exactly same as a rotary motor, the linear motor has a finite length of the primary or secondary parts and it causes static and dynamic end-effect which is the discontinuous airgap flux phenomenon. This end-effect causes the deterioration of the system performance, especially in high-speed operation. Another problem is that construction tolerance restricts the minimum airgap in order to prevent a collision between the primary part and the secondary reaction plate. More over, as the airgap length is getting smaller, the attraction force between the primary part and secondary parts is getting larger dramatically and the attraction force would be another friction against propulsion. Therefore, it is necessary to figure out the characteristics of linear induction motor considering airgap variation in order to achieve high performance of the vehicle. The dynamic model of LIM taking into account end-effects is derived. Then the modified mechanical load equation considering the effect of the attraction and thrust force according to the airgap variation is analyzed. The simulation results are presented to show the effect of the LIM according to the airgap variation.

  • 10kW wind turbine is widely studied in the field of renewable energy for the merits of easy installation to the confined area such as hill, park and urban areas. The performance of various electrical devices such as converter and inverter in the wind turbine system should be systematically analyzed for various wind speeds. However, it is impossible to apply these devices directly to practical wind turbine system for the safety of wind turbine system. Therefore, it is required to develop torque simulator which can generate corresponding torque according to its wind speed. In this work, 10kW torque simulator which consists of three phase torque control inverter, 3 phase induction motor and PMSG(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) is developed.

  • Due to the increase in capacity of auxiliary machinery in power plant, the importance of energy saving has been greatly emphasized. If the speed of fans or pumps is controlled in accordance with the variation of load, large electric energy can be saved. Large capacity inverter, 2MVA GTO inverter, has been developed by operating two of 1MVA unit inverters in parallel. The parallel operation of the unit inverter is accomplished through two output transformers of which the secondary windings are connected in series. The system is composed of one control cubicle, one rectifier cubicle and 2 unit inverter cubicles. This inverter system was applied to the sea water lift pump(SLP) driven by a 6.6KV 1500KW induction motor in Seo-Inchon power plant to save the electric energy. The parallel operation of inverters by 180 degrees apart in switching frequency helps to reduce the harmonic components.

  • Among the variable-speed AC motor drive systems, the static slip power recovery system has been widely adopted in large power drives because a high efficiency drive can be obtained by recovering the slip power to the AC line. Although many improvements have been made in this system, several problems also remain such as the need of transformer in inverter AC side, which results in limiting speed control range and increasing the losses, production of reactive power by the control of inverter firing angle, harmonics in line currents, and so on. This paper presents the novel high performance slip power recovery system using the boost converter and small size filter in the rotor circuit, which recovers slip power of a wound rotor induction machine to AC supply efficiently with the aid of the boost converter, in which most of the problems in conventional system can be solved. The speed can be controlled by the duty ratio of the converter switch, not by inverter firing angle. As a results, the proposed system can operate in high power factor and the harmonic currents caused by the inverter and rectifier can be considerably suppressed. The validity of the proposed system verified by demonstrating the good agreement in the simulation and experimental results.

  • The HVAC(Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system is only controlled by turn on/turn off operations with AC 380V input. Therefore, the efficiency of the system is reduced and accoustic noise problem occurs. Also, the blower is shut down at the AC power failure. In this paper, the inverter system with UPS function for the A/C(Air Conditioning) blower is proposed. Proposed inverter system which is powered from the AC and DC voltage can control speed, operation mode, and soft-start time using CAN communication. In case of the CAN communication failure, RS-232 communication could be used to control the hardware directly by the engineer that can solve existing problems. To verify the validity of proposed inverter system, simulations and experiments are carried out.

Control of the Third Harmonics Injected PWM Inverter in Over Modulation Mode (과변조 영역에서의 3고조파 주입형 PWM 인버터 제어)

  • A method to control the inverter output voltage lineally in over modulation mode of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter is proposed. The third harmonics injected PWM has a extended linear region compared with the sine PWM. But it still has a maximum voltage about 90% compared with the six step inverter. Therefore, to control the output voltage linearly in over modulation mode, analyzing the relationship between the modulation index and the peak of the fundamental component of the modified reference voltage, we can settle the problem in over modulation mode without iteration. Then we can increase the maximum fundamental component of the third harmonics injected PWM inverter comparative to six-step inverter continuously in over modulation mode. The simulation results of the inverter-induction motor system shows the validity of this method and experimental results prove it.

Comparative Study of PI, FNN and ALM-FNN for High Control of Induction Motor Drive (유도전동기 드라이브의 고성능 제어를 위한 PI, FNN 및 ALM-FNN 제어기의 비교연구)

  • In this paper, conventional PI, fuzzy neural network(FNN) and adaptive teaming mechanism(ALM)-FNN for rotor field oriented controlled(RFOC) induction motor are studied comparatively. The widely used control theory based design of PI family controllers fails to perform satisfactorily under parameter variation nonlinear or load disturbance. In high performance applications, it is useful to automatically extract the complex relation that represent the drive behaviour. The use of learning through example algorithms can be a powerful tool for automatic modelling variable speed drives. They can automatically extract a functional relationship representative of the drive behavior. These methods present some advantages over the classical ones since they do not rely on the precise knowledge of mathematical models and parameters. Comparative study of PI, FNN and ALM-FNN are carried out from various aspects which is dynamic performance, steady-state accuracy, parameter robustness and complementation etc. To have a clear view of the three techniques, a RFOC system based on a three level neutral point clamped inverter-fed induction motor drive is established in this paper. Each of the three control technique: PI, FNN and ALM-FNN, are used in the outer loops for rotor speed. The merit and drawbacks of each method are summarized in the conclusion part, which may a guideline for industry application.

  • This paper proposes a new active common-mode voltage damper circuit that is capable of suppressing a common-mode voltage produced in the PWM VSI-fed induction motor drives. The new active common mode voltage damper is consists of a four-level half-bridge Inverter and a common mode transformer with a blocking capacitor. In order to reduce the common mode voltage and high frequency leakage current the active common mode damper applies to the PWM inverter system the compensated voltage of which the amplitude is the same as the common mode voltage and of which the polarity is opposite to the common mode voltage. Simulated using P-SPICE and experimental results show that common-mode voltage damper makes contributions to reducing a high frequency leakage current and common-mode voltage.

  • Since high speed and precision control shoud be satisfied in the position control system, the DC servo motor with easy control and satisfactory response characteristic is used. The various studies of position control techniques have been proposed in order to improve the control performance in the position control system. In this paper, the design method for a position control is suggested for constructing the PD controller in I-PD control system. The coefficients of PD controller in the I-PD control system are determined by using the transfer function which is normalized. Stability and root conditions of the system are derived from mathematical technique. From the result of computer simulation in I-PD control system by applying this control technique, is investigated by the method of proposed design the effectiveness of system response characteristic for input and disturbance.
