In order to elucidate the formation of reaction tissues during the transition from primary to secondary growth, the developmental anatomy was conducted in the first internode of Acer sacchan'num seedling in horizontal position. During the transition from primary to secondary growth, tension wood(gelatinous fiber) was gradually developed on the upper side only, And the tension wood formation in the upper side of the horizontal first internode proceeds acropetally from base to apical portion. Some of the anatomical features of tension wood start to be in the primary vascular tissue and a typical tension wood show during the secondary growth, Therefore, the procambium seems to respond to the gravity as well as vascular cambium. For this reason, both procambium and vascular cambium has to regard as the same meristem, On the other hand, the upper side vessels were longer than those of the lower side in the horizontal first internode. The lateral-wall pitting of vessel elements, however, showed no differences between upper and lower sides which have alternate type. The width and height of rayon the upper side of horizontal first internode was larger as compared with the lower side.r side.
The morpho-anatomical characteristics of panicle in rice plant is generally correlated with the number of spikelets and grain weight per panicle. For the increase of grain yield potential in rice, a low -tillering plant type with large panicles has been suggested as an ideotype. This study was conducted to investigate the panicle morphology and peduncle anatomy of different tillers within a plant in low -and high-tillering cultivars and their relationships on the number of spikelets and grain weight per panicle. A low-tillering, large panicled IR25588 was compared with a high-tillering. small panicled IR58. IR25588 had more inner(IVB) and outer vascular bundles (OVB). bigger peduncle diameter and peduncle thickness just below the panicle neck node than IR58. The top six tillers(M. P1, P2, P3. P4 and S1P2) within a plant had more IVB and OVB. larger peduncle diameter and thickness than the rest of the tillers in both cultivars. Tillers that emerged earlier had more IVB and OVB than tillers that emerged Jater. The total number of primary and secondary rachis-branches of IR25588 was much higher than that of IR58. IR25588 had more number of spikelets per panicle than IR58. and the top six panicles showed more spikelets per panicle than the rest of the panicles in both cultivars. The peduncle diameter was more important than peduncle thickness on the spikelet differentiation and panicle weight. especially in low-tillering cultivars. The number of IVB and OVB were highly correlated with the number of rachis-branches. spikelets and grain weight per panicle. The number of spikelets per IVB and spikelets per primary branch were higher in IR25588 than IR58 indicating the higher sink strength in low -tillering with large panicled cultivars than in high-tillering with small panicled cultivars. Based on the morpho-anatomical characteristics of a low-tillering cultivar and the top six tillers within a plant. the present results could be support that 'a low-tillering sturdy culms with large panicles' is an ideo-type of rice plant for increasing grain yield potential.potential.
The morphological and anatomical features of petioles in genus Populus were as follows, 1. All of 8 species had one sort of these trichoma; wooly, tomentose, gravellate, cravellate. 2. The colors of petioles were different with the species; Populus alba was green white, P. glandulosa was white green, and P. maximowiezii P. koreana were red on the surface but the back of petioles were light green. Most of petioles of P. euramericana and P. deltoides were light green but the rest on the same trees were two different colors as P. nigra var. italica and P. simonii were light green or yellow green. 3. P. koreana had the largest diameter of petiole among the 8 species investigated, and P. simonii was the smallest. 4. The lengths of petioles were highly significant among species except 3 combinations. 5. The number of vascular was different with the species and with section levels of petiole; At the base level, the vascular number of 8 species were highly significant among species and the average number of vascular of 8 species were 6.61. At the middle level, the average number of vascular were 5.26 in 8 species, and P. nigra var. italica were highly significant against the rest 7 species and two combinations showed at 5 percent significance. 6. At the terminal level, since the 95.5 per cent of the samples contained 3~4 vasculars and only 4.5 per cent of the samples in each section contained 5 vasculars, there, was no significance among the species. 6. Mostly the largest vascular of petioles was appeared in under part of the any sections in 8 species investigated.
In order to observe the anatomical phenomena of root formation in the hypocotyl cuttings of maples, the hypocotyls of Acer palmatum. Acer micro-sieboldianum, and Acer saccharinum were used as the materials. The rooted portions were sectioned by a microtom and doubly stained by safranin and fast green. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. A cross section structure of hypocotyl cuttings of Acer sp. is consist of epidermis, cortex, vascular bundle and pith from the outside. The vascular bundle makes circular shape forming polyarch in A. saccharinum and tetrarch in both A. palmatum and A. micro-sieboldianum. 2. An adventitious root of A. saccharinum originated in phloem parenchyma, while that of A. palmatum and A. micro-sieboldianum originated in interfascicular parenchyma related with phloem cells. 3. The hypocotyl cuttings of Acer sp. is commonly composed of parenchyma tissue having vigorous differentiation capability. Therefore, the originated root grow easily through the cortex and epidermis breaking their tissues.
Geothermal water contains toxic quantities of sulfur, potassium, sodium, boron, and other toxic elements. These toxic elements can substantially restrict germination and seedling growth in rice plant. Germination percentage, average days required for germination and germination velocity were drastically affected by geothermal water. Binato cultivar has higher germination rate compared to IR58 and Unbong 7. Plant height, root length, leaf number and total dry weight decreased with increased geothermal water concentration. Binato and IR58 showed higher total dry weight than Unbong 7 at 25 percent geothermal water at 15 days after treatment (DAT). Binato and IR58 were relatively more tolerant than Unbong 7 in terms of percentage of leaf damage at 25, 50 and 75% concentration of geothermal water at 10 DAT. The development of large and small vascular bundles decreased with increasing concentration of geothermal water from control to 50% in three rice cultivars.
Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources that have many advantages such as fast growing, easy cultivation, short rotation, and a relatively lower price. In this study, the anatomical characteristics of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) by age from one-year-old to five-year-old were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also, the crystalline properties such as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were investigated by an X-ray diffraction method. In one-year-old bamboo xylem, a few vascular bundles showed missing bundle sheath in near the intercellular space. Moreover, one-year-old bamboo had the shortest fiber length and the smallest values in vessel diameter, width of vascular bundle, and thickness of inner layer. One-year-old bamboo also showed the smallest values in the crystallinity and crystallite width. Near epidermis samples had longer fiber length and greater vascular bundle spacing than near pith samples. Relative crystallinity and crystallite width near the epidermis were also higher than near the pith. This study revealed significant differences in qualitative and quantitative anatomical characteristics between one-year-old and two-year- or more old Moso bamboos. It is concluded that the structural differences by bamboo age can be used to differentiate the characteristics of juvenile and mature bamboo.

This study was carried out to understand the physiological characteristics of early-matured 'Hanareum' (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) pears through anatomical structure and fruit characteristics and also the changes according to gibberellin (GA) treatment. The pericarp at full bloom consists of outer epidermis, hypodermis, parenchyma cell, and inner epidermis from the exterior and five types of vascular bundle tissues. Cork cell layer was formed at 70 days after full bloom (DAFB) in non-treated fruits and formed at 60 DAFB in GA treated fruits. Cell division period was from full bloom (FB) to 40 DAFB and then fruit enlargement was accomplished by the cell growth. Comparison of the fruit enlargement and fruit structure development by GA treatment or non-treatment showed that cell division of 'Hanaerum' fruits did not affect the GA treatment but fruit enlargement was affected cell growth. Fruit stalk of GA treatment fruits was larger than non-treated fruits from 40 DAFB which correspond to the period of the stop of cell division and 'Hanareum' was regarded GA treatment expedite of vascular bundle tissue growth and relatively increased nutrient transport to fruit. In addition to, average fruit quality between the non-treatment and GA treatment showed that fruit weight was higher in fruits treated by GA but firmness was lower and probably was effected fruit storing in 'Hanareum' pear.
In order to investigate the degree of grain shedding of red rices collected in Korea, breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of 269 varieties; 82 Korean and 100 foreign red rices and 87 Korean cultivars including 26 native varieties, 30 Japonica-Indica hybrids and 31 Japonica type varieties, were measured at harvest time. Also, histological characteristics of abscission region between spikelet and pedicel were observed. The breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of both Korean and foreign red rices were weaker than those of Japonica-Indica hybrids which were known as easily shedding varieties in Korea. Abscission layers were observed in the majority of Korean red rices except for 5 varieties, and those of all varieties belonging to both long grain types and 'Sare's were cracked completely at harvest time, while those of round grain types were not cracked except one variety. The breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of the tested varieties having cracked abscission layer were weaker than those of non-cracked ones. Both strengths of breaking tensile and breaking bending were positively correlated with diameter of supporting zone and thickness of sclerenchyma tissue surrounding central vascular tissue of suporting zone at 0.1% significant level, respectively.
Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources in the world. To obtain valuable information for effective use of bamboo resources in Korea, the anatomical characteristics of the commercial Korean bamboo species (Phyllostachys pubescens, Phyllostachys nigra, and Phyllostachys bambusoides) were analyzed. The structures in bamboo culm were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also the crystalline properties as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were measured by an X-ray diffraction method. The three Korean bamboo species had the vascular bundle type I with tylosoid in intercellular space. In the outer part of culm, vascular bundles showed denser spacing than inner part. The fiber length in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed longer than inner part samples. Furthermore, the fiber length showed a significant difference between inner part and outer part in three bamboo species, showing the longest fiber length in Phyllostachys bambusoides. Phyllostachys pubescens showed the greatest diameter in vessel and parenchyma on cross section. Parenchyma cells in Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys bambusoides showed similar length and width in both radial and tangential sections. The relative crystallinity and crystallite width in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed higher values than those in inner part samples, with the greatest values from Phyllostachys bambusoides.
