  • The purpose of this study is to verify the causal relationship between social withdrawal and peer alienation among Korean children. The survey study participants were 2,110 children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. The 5-year longitudinal data (Korean Child and Youth Panel Survey; KCYPS) of 1st grade elementary school student cohort was used. Latent Growth Modeling was applied to analyze the causality over time of social withdrawal and peer isolation. The results revealed that the trajectories of children's social withdrawal decreased over time. Children's social withdrawal showed significant individual differences in terms of initial value and rates of change. The initial value and slope of children's social withdrawal had an effect on the peer alienation in the 3rd grade; however, there was no significant effect on the peer alienation in the 5th grade.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of childhood obesity on school adjustment and whether the effects were mediated by withdrawal. Using the 2015 Korea Welfare Panel Study data, this study conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to examine the mediating effects of withdrawal on the relationship between childhood obesity and school adjustment. In addition, a Sobel test was used to consider the statistical significance of the mediating effects. Findings were as follows: First, childhood obesity had a negative influence on school adjustment. Second, childhood obesity affected withdrawal positively. Third. withdrawal had a negative impact on school adjustment. Fourth, withdrawal was found to partially mediate the relationship between childhood obesity and school adjustment. Based on the results, implications were discussed to intervene in preventing childhood obesity and to reduce the negative effects of childhood obesity.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a singing program on withdrawal behaviors of children in low-income families. To measure the effects of the singing program, the researcher compared the results of K-YSR and TRF withdrawal scales before and after the program. Finally, the researcher did research on the subjects' musical and non-musical behaviors related to withdrawal through a record of behavior observation. The results of this study were asfollows: First, after comparing the results of K-YSR and TRF withdrawal scales conducted before and after the singing program, the mean of the scores was decreased by 6.4 and 3.6 points respectively (p = .042). Second, an analysis of withdrawal-related behavioral changes in music activities after the program showed an increase in frequency of eye contact, as well as tone and volume of subjects' voices. The results of this study indicate that the singing program has positive effects on withdrawal behaviors of children in low-income familiesin addition, it is effective in alleviating withdrawal-related behaviors.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effect of parents' positive and negative parenting attitudes perceived by children on smartphone dependence. In addition, it is to verify whether aggression and social withdrawal play a mediating role in the relationship between parental attitude and dependence on smartphones. In order to achieve this goal, the data of the "Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018(KCYPS 2018)" were used for analysis. The sample group is 2,399 "elementary school students 4 cohort". The research results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that autonomy support and coercion had a negative effect on aggression of children, but rejection and inconsistency had a positive effect on aggression. Second, it was found that inconsistency and rejection had a positive effect on children's social atrophy, but coercion had a negative effect. Third, it was found that aggression had a positive effect on children's dependence on smartphones, but social withdrawal had no significant effect. Fourth, it was found that autonomy support, rejection, coercion, and inconsistency indirectly affect children's dependence on smartphones through aggression. In this study's conclusion, practical implications for lowering children's dependence on smartphones were suggested.

  • This study aims to examine the effect of child-centered group play therapy on the improvement of withdrawn preschool children's daily stress, anxiety, peer interaction and EEG variation. The research subjects are 12 children of 3-5 years of age who are over 65T in the social-withdrawal scale of KPRC(Korean Personality Rating Scale for Children). They were recommended by class teachers due to the withdrawal behavior at D kindergarten in Seoul. The experimental group received 12 sessions of the child-centered group play therapy program, twice a week for 35 minutes. But the control group did not receive any of the child-centered group play therapy program. To verify the effects of the program, a Mann-Whitney-U test of the non-parametric was preceded and homogeneity between the two groups was verified. Also, a Wilcoxon's signed-rank test was conducted to check on the pre-to-post changes of daily stress, anxiety, peer-interaction and EEG variation by using SPSS 18.0. The results of this research showed that the child-centered group play therapy program decreases daily stress and anxiety, while it increases positive peer-interaction and the EQ of withdrawal children. The result of this study serves as a baseline data about the effects of child-centered group play therapy for withdrawal children with emotional difficulties.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the path model of child's sex, temperament, maternal parenting behavior, and child's emotion regulation on child social behaviors. The subjects were 286 elementary school children. Data were gathered through questionnaires reported by mothers and teachers. Path analysis revealed that (1) mother's overprotective or coercive parenting behaviors effected neither child's emotion regulation nor social behaviors (2) child's sex and activity level effected child's aggression both directly and indirectly through child's emotion regulation (3) child's 'activity level' and 'avoidance' temperament effected child's social withdrawal both directly and indirectly through child' emotion regulation. Findings underscore the role of emotion regulation as a mediator in predicting child aggression and social withdrawal.

Method: A randomized controlled pre-post test design was used. The participants were 31 children who were withdrawn attending J. P. Elementary School in Pohang City. Sixteen were assigned to the experimental group and 15 to the control group. The program consisted of 20 sessions of 80 minutes per session, 2 days a week, for 10 weeks. Instruments used for this study were the Children's Behavior Check List -Korean version (K-CBCL) and a self-esteem inventory. The data were analyzed using fisher exact test and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Thescores for withdrawn behavior, social problems, anxiousness/depression, internalizing problems and total behavior problems decreased significantly in the experimental group as compare to the control group. Social behavior and self-esteem increased significantly in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusions: This study provides evidence for the pontential and beneficial effects of group art therapy in children who are withdrawn. The program could be adequately used to improve problem behavior in withdrawn children.

  • This study examined the relationship between physical education and externalizing(aggression) and internalizing(depression, social withdrawal) problem behaviors among adolescents. The moderating role of gender and time in the association between physical education and problem behavior was also identified. This study used data from the second, third, and fourth waves of the middle school student cohort (N=2,133, N=2,151, N=1,979) of the Korean Children-Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS). Main analyses involved multilevel growth model with interaction terms. The dependent variables were aggression, depression, and social withdrawal. The independent variables were gender and physical education (exercise hours) at school. The control variables were abuse, school-adjustment, annual household income and parents' highest level of education. The major longitudinal findings of this study are as follows: First, there was significant change according to the passage of time only in aggression among externalizing and internalizing problems. Second, gender differences exist in aggression and depression. Third, exercise hours of physical education had a negative relationship with internalizing problems. Fourth, there were no gender differences over time in both externalizing and internalizing problems. Fifth, the interaction between exercise hours of physical education and time was statistically significant for social withdrawal. Sixth, the interaction between exercise hours of physical education and gender was statistically significant for depression. The results of this study may become an academic basis for suggesting policy directions that promote increased exercise hours in physical education classes at school.
