  • In this study, we investigated the design methods of satellite constellations to conduct near-real-time surveillance reconnaissance of the Korean Peninsula. Also, we designed satellite constellations utilizing the Walker-Delta method and repeat-ground-track method, and taking into account the target area and the feasible number of satellites. The constrains of the Electro-Optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar equipment were also considered in performance analysis. As a result, the designed constellation has mean revisit time of less than 30 min which enables near-real-time surveillance reconnaissance of the Korean Peninsula. This research provides the strategy to design the satellite constellation for reconnaissance. Furthermore, it contributes to suggesting an operating strategy for micro-satellites constellation and guidelines for establishing space force.

  • Designing satellite constellations providing partial coverage of certain regions becomes more important as small low-altitude satellites receives an increasing attention due to its cost-effectiveness analysis. Generally, Walker's method is a standard constellation method for global coverage but not effective for partial coverage. The purpose of this study is to design optimal constellation of satellites for effective observation in Korean peninsula regions. In this study, a new constellation design method is presented for partial coverage, using direct control of satellites' orbital elements. And also, a ground repeating circular orbit is considered for each satellite's orbit with the Earth oblateness effect. As the results, at least four satellites are required to observe the Korean peninsula regions effectively when minimum elevation angle is assumed as 12 degrees. The results from new method are better than those from the best Walker method. The proposed algorithm will be useful to design satellite constellation missions of Korea in future.

  • The Korean Military Satellite Communication System (KMILSATCOM) is composed of military payload of KOREASAT 5 and military satellite terminals. The military satellite terminals communicate with each other in satellite service area. The satellite terminal management system is developed for centralized management of satellite terminals and communications link. The satellite terminal management system dose not use terrestrial networks (i.e. Fiber optic, Microwave) for management because the KMILSATCOM is system for emergency (i.e. war time) and the satellite terminals has to move to operational area, so the management link must use satellite link. The management link is composed of 1 to N communication scheme for one manager and multiple terminals. This paper describes the satellite terminal management protocol architecture and the performance of the protocol of the KMILSATCOM system.

  • This paper presents a sun-synchronous orbit design which effectuvely includes the requirements derived from spacecraft to ground station contact and spacecraft to target image accessibility. For this purpose, operation parameters of multiple spacecraft are defined as Contact Overlap, Contact Overlap Gap, Access Overlap, Access Overlap Gap. These parameters are used to form a Figure of Merit that reflects the operational requirements. The Figure of Merit is optimized to increase the efficiency of operating multiple spacecraft in constellation and is used to determine the operational orbit of each spacecraft that constitutes the constellation.

  • Before an actual military communications satellite is designed and constructed, a feasibility study should take place. The basic functions of such system can be observed and demonstrated in an X-Band payload simulator. For this purpose a Payload Concept Model (PCM) for X-Band payload subsystem has been developed to simulate the workings of an actual military communications payload. This paper explains and illustrates the mechanical design, manufacture, and integration of the PCM. Basic RF tests also have been performed in order to verify the design requirement of the system. The results demonstrate successful development of the PCM and operation without RF losses.

  • In this paper, multi-GNSS network RTK MAC correction generation software developed based on MATLAB GUI is introduced. The software was developed as a post-processing software based on simulation data to evaluate the feasibility of an algorithm for generating correction for multi-GNSS including GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. As a result of software operation, network RTK correction for each system of multi-GNSS is output in MATLAB file format. In this paper, to evaluate the performance of the developed software, the residual error was analyzed after applying the correction generated through the software to the user. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that effective network RTK correction could be generated by confirming that the residual errors of users were maintained at 10 cm or less.

  • Using COMS which provides multi-beam switching function, the optimal transmission channel environments which provides the high data rate communication are proposed in this paper. Also the link budget for communication transponder of COMSAT is designed. Bsaed on the channel modeling for group delay, non-linear and gain flatness characteristics, the system performances which provide high data rate (HDR) service were analyzed in Ka-band satellite channel. As the transmission data rate is increased, the degradation due to these channel characteristics is severely affect the system performance. To efficiently provide the various service via the same transmission system it is necessary to equlize the primary impairment factors. The optimum operating points of HDR satellite transmission system are implemeted and operated by considering the analyzed results on channel characteristics.

  • One of the most important steps to consider in utilizing micro-satellites for surveillance or reconnaissance operations is the design of the satellite constellation. The Walker-Delta constellation which is commonly used in designing satellite constellations is not ideal for this operation in which military satellites are required to monitor specific regions continuously in a stable manner. This study aims to discuss the methodology for designing a satellite constellation that is capable of monitoring the fixed region at the fixed time each day by using the Sun synchronous Orbit. The BB(Beach Ball) constellation that we propose outperforms the Walker-Delta constellation in terms of robustness and it holds the merit of being simple in its design, thereby making future expansions more convenient. We expect the BB constellation will have a high applicability as the operational concept of military surveillance satellites is established in the near future.
