Comparison of Phase-Screen-Generation Methods for Simulating the Effects of Atmospheric Turbulence (대기 외란을 모사하는 위상판 생성 방법 비교)

  • Phase screens are widely used to simulate the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the phase fluctuations of a light beam. We compare three sampled-based phase-screen-generation methods (the fast-Fourier-transform, subharmonic, and covariance-matrix methods), in terms of accuracy and simulation time. We show that the covariance method generates the phase screens most accurately, with simulation time comparable to the other sampled-based methods.

Measurement of a Phase Plate Simulates Atmospheric Turbulence Depending on Laser Power (레이저 출력에 따른 난류 모사 위상판 측정)

  • The performance of astronomical telescopes can be negatively affected by atmospheric turbulence. To address this issue, techniques for atmospheric turbulence correction have been developed, requiring the simulation of atmospheric turbulence in the laboratory. The most practical way to simulate atmospheric turbulence is to use a phase plate. When measuring a phase plate that simulates strong turbulence, a Shack-Hartmann wave-front sensor is commonly used. However, the laser power decreases as it passes through the phase plate, potentially leading to a weak laser signal at the sensor. This paper investigates the need to control the laser power when measuring a phase plate that simulates strong atmospheric turbulence, and examines the effects of the laser power on the measured wavefront. For phase plates with relatively high Fried parameter r0, the laser power causes a variation of over 10% in r0. For phase plates with relatively low r0, the laser power causes a variation of less than 5%, which means that the influence of the laser power is negligible for phase plates that simulate strong atmospheric turbulence. Based on the system described in this paper, a phase plate simulating strong atmospheric turbulence can be measured at a laser power of 5 mW or higher. Therefore, controlling the laser's output power is necessary when measuring a phase plate for simulating atmospheric turbulence, especially for phase plates with low r0 values.

  • Optical transmission characteristics of retardation film for obliquely incident light is calculated by using extended Jones calculus and it is geometrically interpreted on Poincare sphere representation as rotational transformation. The characteristics of a retardation film is that while the rotation axis is fixed at a point on the Equator of the Poincar sphere, the rotation angle varies with the direction of incidence. This property can be compensated by using a tandem arrangement of the two optical films whose optic axes do not coincident, and this method can be used for the improvement of the viewing angle characteristics of BTN cells. cells.

  • 변위 근거 유한요소해석을 사용하는 대부분의 위상 최적화 기법은 요소의 안정성 부족으로 인하여 체스판 무늬가 주기적 형태로 반복하여 설계영역 내부에 나타난다. 본 연구에서는 선형요소를 이용하면서 최적화 알고리즘의 안정성에 영향을 주지 않고 간단하게 모든 최적화 알고리즘에 이용 가능한 체스판무늬 형성 방지책을 개발하였다. 본 연구의 체스판무늬 형성 방치책에서는 먼저 각 선형요소를 구성하는 절점들의 부치분율을 설계변수로 선정하고, 요소내부의 부피분율을 설계변수로 표현하기 위한 선형 보간함수로 선형요소들의 형상함수를 선정하였다. 그리고, 설계변수와 등가 재료상수와의 상관 관계식은 평균장 근사이론을 이용하여 균질화된 재료에 벌칙인자가 도입된 관계식을 이용하였다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 순차이차계획법인 PLBA 알고리즘을 이용하여 위상 최적화문제를 해석하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 구조물의 변위 제약조건을 고려한 위상 최적설계를 체스판무늬 검색 알고리즘과 가상하중을 이용하여 수행하였다. 본 연구에서는 변위 제약조건의 민감도 계산을 위하여 가상 변위장을 도입하였으며, 밀도와 유효강성계수의 상관관계를 정의하기 위하여 가상재료를 도입하였다. 또한, 선형 유한요소를 이용한 위상 최적화 기법에서 일반적으로 나타나는 체스판무늬를 제거하기 위하여 밀도 재분배방법을 이용하였다. 그리고, 변위 제약조건을 고려한 경우와 그렇지 않은 경우의 수치예제를 비교 검토함으로써 본 연구의 타당성을 검증하였다.

  • We analyze the number of phase screens required for the simulation of a high-energy laser beam's propagation over an atmospheric channel. For high-energy lasers exceeding tens of kilowatts (kW) in power, the laser beam is mainly affected by atmospheric turbulence and thermal blooming. When using the split-step method to implement losses due to atmospheric absorption and scattering and distortion of the beam due to turbulence and thermal blooming, the number of phase screens is a critical factor in determining the accuracy and time required for the simulation. By comparing simulation results obtained using a large number of phase screens (e.g., 150 screens) under a wide range of atmospheric turbulence conditions, we provide new guidelines for the number of phase screens required for simulating the beam propagation of a high-power laser below 2.5×106 W/m2 (e.g., a 500-kW laser beam having a 50-cm diameter).

  • We present a method to improve encryption level by use of a rotational term in the double random-phase-mask(RPM) encryption system. Encrypted optical images are recorded in a photorefractive LiNbO$_3$:Fe crystal and reconstructed by using a phase conjugated reading beam. The encryption level for the analog image is analyzed by use of visibility function.

  • The conditions under which a composite retarder consisting of two different retardation plates can be operated as a tunable quarter-wave plate are derived. The explicit expressions for the azimuthal angle of a linear polarizer and those of two retardation plates to generate circularly polarized light are presented as a function of retardation angles. Those expressions for the azimuthal angles derived using the Jones matrix formalism are verified as identical to the expressions derived from the analysis of the trajectory on a Poincar$\acute{e}$ sphere. A couple of examples are presented for generating circularly polarized light when two identical retardation plates are used.
