Acheilognathus signifer is distributed widely in high density in the Naechon-stream. The order of this-stream was 2 ${\sim}$ 4 and the water width is wide but the depth is relatively shallow and the sinuosity is 1.83, which indicates a meandering stream. The water width/stream width ratio is 1.59, which suggests moderate entrenchment. Naechon-stream was classed as B type by Rosgen (1995). The natural habitat of A. signifer is a slow flow velocity pool, like a backwater pool, which is made up of piled up boulders that restricts the flow of water. The stream bed is made up of boulders and sands that enable the spawning host to inhabit. A. signifer selects a microhabitat where the boulders furnish hiding places. The Habitat of A. signifer is strongly affected by the existence or not there of U. douglasiae sinuolatus. After hatching from the mussel, A. signifer inhabits the surface of the water. It then moves to the low layer once it acquires swimming ability. While A. signifer inhabits the river in summer, A. signifer moves to the deeper layers in winter, where there are the refuge like rocks and boulders. In spring A. signifer moves from the deep water to the river line where the mussels reside.
An outbreak of Ricania sp. occurred in the Kurye, Jeonnam area in 2011. This outbreak damaged many kinds of fruit trees such as Cornus, Persimmon and Chestnut. This experiment was conducted to survey the occurrence ecology of Ricania sp. such as host plants, oviposition characters, morphological characters and life cycle, as well as to select environmental friendly control agents. Ricaina sp. host plants included 51 species such as 32 xylophytes, and 19 herbaceous plants. Ricaina sp. preferred Cornus officinalis, Diospyros kaki, Castanea crenata, Eucommia ulmoides, Styrax japonicus for oviposition. Adults laid eggs on new inner twigs with 28.8 eggs per egg-mass. Egg size was 1.24 mm(length), 0.55 mm(width) in an oval shape. Nymphs molted four times. Every nymph stage had an x shape of yellow or white beeswax around the anus. Overwintered eggs of Ricania sp. hatched from the mid May to early June. Nymphal periods were from mid May to mid August and adults appeared from mid July but spawning began in mid August. Ricania sp. damaged new twigs by oviposition and retarded growth by sucking nutrients and producing a sooty mold. Sophora and natural plant extracts were effective environmentally friendly agricultural materials used to control the nymph and adult Ricania sp. Mortality was > 80%.
Characteristics of habitat alteration and post-embryonic development of Paratlanticus ussuriensis were investigated in the mountain region of Bitanri, Yeongdong county, Chungcheongbuk-do from 2007 to 2009. Overwintered eggs under the ground in the hillside were hatched from late March to early April. The soil temperature during this season was $7{\sim}14^{\circ}C$. Young nymphs lived mainly at the hillside by eating oak tree leaves but the 3rd or 4th instars switched their habitat to orchards near the hillside in early May, which is the time for sprouting of peach leaves. Old nymphs developed into the adult stage at the orchards in late May and moved back to the hillside in late June. Duration of post-embryonic development from the first instar nymph to adult was 49.2 days after 7 moltings at $25^{\circ}C$. Female adults collected from the field had long ovipositor (26.2 mm) and were slightly longer in the body length, hind femur, tegmen and pronotum than those of males.

"Onnuri" is a new orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) cultivar developed by the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in 2011. To develop the new variety of orchardgrass, 5 superior clones were selected and polycrossed for seed production. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage productivity of "Onnuri" were examined at Cheonan from 2009 to 2011, and regional trials were conducted in Cheonan, Pyeongchang, Jinju and Jeju from 2009 to 2011, respectively. "Onnuri" showed medium type growth habit in fall and spring, and medium in length of flag leaf and long upper internode. Plant height of "Onnuri" was 5cm more than that of the standard cultivar, "Amba" and the heading date was 5 days earlier than that of Amba (16th May). Characteristics, such as waterlogging and disease resistance, of "Onnuri" were stronger or better than those of Amba, Especially, dry matter yield of "Onnuri" (14,775 kg/ha) increased by 18% compared to that of Amba (12,523 kg/ha). Nutritive values appeared to be similar in both varieties.
BACKGROUND: As natural wetlands are decreased by increment of human demand, the importance of rice fields as an alternative habitat for waterbirds is well documented. However, the relationship between waterbirds use and management practice of rice fields has not been fully understood. The present study attempted to understand the changes in temporal abundance of waterbirds and their preference for habitat types in rice fields all year round. METHODS AND RESULTS: Waterbirds census were conducted in rice fields around Asan bay in Korea during April 2009-March 2010 and April 2011-March 2012. In the bird counts, the locations of the observed birds on a 1/2,500 map were recorded along with the local habitat type (paddy, ditch, levee, road). Thirty five species of waterbirds recorded in the rice fields during the survey period and three major groups (shorebirds, herons, and waterfowls) were characterized according to season and micro-habitat use. Shorebirds visited a flooded paddy for feeding during their spring migration season (April-May), and herons used the rice field as feeding sites during their breeding periods (April-October). Most waterfowls were observed in a dry paddy to feed a fallen rice seed and stubs during the winter season (September-March). Waterbird groups selectively used micro-habitats in rice field. Shorebirds and waterfowls mainly preferred at rice paddies, while herons were attracted to most habitat types. CONCLUSION(S): Rice fields supported various waterbirds all year round and waterbird communities using the rice fields were dramatically changed according to seasonal change of rice field condition.

New orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) variety named as 'Kordi' was developed by the National Livestock Research Institute(NLRI) in 2003. Five superior clones on selected to develope the new variety of orchardgrass, and polycrossed for synthetic seed production. Synthetic seeds were examined on the agronomic growth characteristics and forage production at Suwon from 1995 to 1998, and regional trials were conducted in Suwon, Pyungchang and Jeju from 2001 to 2003 and Icsan in 2003, respectively. 'Kordi' showed semi-erect growth habit in fall and spring, and long type in length of flag leaf and short in upper internode. Plant height of 'Kordi' was little short compared to that of standard variety, Ambassador, and heading date was delayed about 3 days as 14th May compared to Ambassador. Characters such as winter hardiness. lodging tolerance, regrowth, disease resistance of 'Kordi' were stronger or better than those of Ambassador. 'Kordi' showed $10\%$ higher dry matter yield as 15,174 kg/ha compared to Ambassador. Nutritive value was appeared to be similar in both varieties.
Torymus sinensis was found to be a solitary ectoparasitoid attacking the larvae ofDryocosmus kuriphilus. The sex ratio of Torymus sinensis was close to 1 : 1 in foreign chestnut varieties.Under constant temperatures of 15"C, 20$^{\circ}$C, and 25"C, the preoviposition period and longevity of theadult was longer at lower temperatures when fed on honey. Most of the Torymus sinensis female havemature eggs in their ovaries just after emergence. The number of mature eggs reached to average 22.5individuals per female in four days, which was the highest value, after the emergence and then decreasedgradually. Eggs were laid on the larvae of the host or attached on inner surface of the gall chamber. Theeggs were oval in shape, measuring 0.49 mm length and 0.13 mm width and the color of the justoviposited egg was milky white. The larvae appeared in one day after being deposited at 20$^{\circ}$C. Thepupae, 2.25 mm length for female and 1.89 mm length for male, was milky white in color just afterpupation but became black later. In Kangwon Province, development period of chestnut galls formated byDryocosmus kuriphilus were mid April to late May and its primary parasitoid, Torymus sinensis adult, emerged from withered previous year galls in early April to early May. This species has one generation ina year, and hibernated with the matured larvae. hibernated with the matured larvae.
Sexual maturation of the bluespotted mud hopper, Boleophthalmus Pectinirostris(Linnaeus) was investigated histologically on the gonadal development, and studied by gonadosomatic index(GSI), egg diameter composition. Samples were collected in the intertidal zone of Wolyon-ri, Hoihyon-myon, Okku-gun, Chollabuk-do, Korea, from April to October in 1988 and from June to August in 1989. The ovary is a pair of sac-shaped organ. The testis is a pair of tubule-shaped organ and it is connected to the seminal vesicle which is located at the posterior end of the testis. In male and female, GSI began to increase from late May when the water temperature began to increase and reached the maximum value in June and July, respectively. It began to decrease from August, the highest water temperature season. Thereafter, maintained relatively low values until October. The annual reproductive cycle of this species could be classified into four sucessive developmental stages: growing stage$(April{\~}May)$, mature stage$(June{\~}early\;July)$, ripe and spent stage(late lune-early August), degenerative and resting stage$(late\;August{\~}March:\;the wintering\;period)$. According to the frequency distributions of egg diameters in the spawning season, Boleophthalmus Pectinirostris was species to spawn twice or more in the spawning season.

This study was carried out to clarify the biologies and morphological characteristics of Rhynchaenus sanguinipes. Also some chemicals were tested to screen the effective insecticide for the control of the species. Up to date, Zelkova serrata has been hewn as host plant of Rhynchaenus sanguinipes, which shows serious damage in this country. In the present study, Ulmus pumila was first found as host plant in this study. Body lengths of larvae, pupa and adult were 4.53$\pm$0.30 mm, 3.30$\pm$0.42 mm and 2.96$\pm$0.12 mm, respectively. The overwintered adult of the species emerged on early April to late April, and adult of nekt generation emerged on early May to late May, Pupal periods were 10, 7.2, 5.1 and 4 days on 16, 20, 24 and 28$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The lower developmental threshold temperature was 5.8$^{\circ}C$. Four braconid parasitoids were found as natural enemies, which emerged mainly on late April to early June. Insecticidal activities with treatments of fenitrothion 50% EC, indoxacarb 30% WG, ethofenprox 20% EC and thiacloprid 10% SC was investigated against adult of R. sanguinpes, and they showed >90% mortality.
Field survey for Orius spp., predacious natural enemies of thrips pests, on several plants by beating or sweeping method revealed that O. sauteri, O. strigicollis, O. minutus, and O. nagaii habituated in open fields or in greenhouses of Korea. Among them, O. sauteri was the most dominant species at all areas (83.0~92.5%), followed by O. strigicollis and O. minutus. Especially, O. sauteri exclusively dominated on the economically important crops such as soybean, red pepper, and watermelon. On the other hand, O. strigicallis and O. nagaii occurred mainly on ornamental plants including chrysanthemum and rose and on rice, respectively, during summer-autumn season. The seasonal occurrence varied depending on the plant. Initial population of Orius spp. was first observed on white clover in late May, followed by on soybean, red pepper, an buck wheat in early June, indcating that movement of Orius spp. relates to the flowering time of the plant. Peak of Orius spp. abundance was found first in July and secondly in August or September. On white clover and buck wheat the first peak of abundance was one week earlier than on soybean and red pepper. Therefore, we suppose that wild plants such as white clover can serve as a reservoir for Orius spp. after overwintering.
