This study is descriptive research to identify the effect of COVID-19 stress on premenstrual syndrome in female college students and the mediating effect of depression and coping with premenstrual syndrome. The data were collected through an on-line survey for 20 days from November 11 to November 30, 2021, targeting female college students attending C College located in S city. As a result of analyzing a total of 161 data, COVID-19 stress was positively correlated with premenstrual syndrome(r=.383, p<.001) and depression(r=.436, p<.001), and coping with premenstrual syndrome had a positive correlation only in premenstrual syndrome(r=.190, p=.016). As a result of verifying the mediating effect of depression and coping with premenstrual syndrome between COVID-19 stress and premenstrual syndrome, COVID-19 stress had a significant direct effect on premenstrual syndrome(β=4.907, p=.002), and depression(β=6.780, p<.001), and depression had a significant direct effect on premenstrual syndrome(β=.383, p=<.001), coping with premenstrual syndrome had a direct effect on premenstrual syndrome(β=4.292, p=.030) respectively. The indirect effect of verifying the mediating effect in the relationship between COVID-19 stress and premenstrual syndrome confirmed that there was a statistically significant effect only in the path via depression(95% CI, 1.282 to 4.140). Therefore, it is necessary to develop an intervention strategy to reduce depression and alleviate premenstrual syndrome symptoms by controlling related stress, such as COVID-19 stress, in preparation for the outbreak of new infectious diseases and pandemic situations such as COVID-19.

월경전증후군은 여성만이 경험할 수 있는 생리 전 불편감을 치료가 필요할 정도로 심각하게 느끼는 병을 말한다. 여성의 65%가 가벼운 우울감과 같은 생리 전 불편 증상을 호소하고, 20~40%는 월경 때마다 반복되는 치료가 필요한 정도의 다양한 증상으로 월경전증후군을 앓고 있다. 또한, 이들 중 2~9%는 사회적, 직업적으로 더욱 심각한 증상 때문에 치료를 받게 되는데 이를 월경 전 불쾌장애라고 부른다.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with premenstrual syndrome among nursing students. Participants were 159 nursing students 2 colleges in B metropolitan city and 1 university in K city. Data were collected between October 28 and November 15, 2016 using structured questionnaires. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 21.0 program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression. In nursing students premenstrual syndrome was significantly positive correlated with stress(r=-.396, p<.001) and menstrual attitude(r=-.176, p=.027). The significant factors that influence premenstrual syndrome were stress(${\beta}=.36$, p<.001) and dysmenorrhea(${\beta}=.22$, p=.003), which explained 19.4%. The results indicate a need to manage the premenstrual syndrome of nursing students. The finding also suggest that consideration be given to duration of menstruation, menstrual quantity and peri-menstrual dysphoria in developing strategies to reduce stress and dysmenorrhea and developing programs to manage the premenstrual syndrome among nursing students.

Objectives : To investigate the frequency and clinical characteristics of premenstrual syndrome(PMS)/premenstrual dysphoric disorder(PMDD) in high school students, and determine the correlates of PMS/PMDD in association with comorbid depression and anxiety. Methods : A total of 1688 students were recruited from 5 high schools in Seoul, Korea. Subjects completed the questionnaire composed of scales to measure premenstrual symptoms, depression, and anxiety, as well as sociodemographic and reproductive variables. Subjects were categorized into 3 groups by using the Premenstrual Symptom Screening Tool(PSST) to determine the frequency and clinical characteristics of PMS/PMDD. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify the correlates of PMS/PMDD. Results : The frequency of moderate to severe PMS and PMDD was 20.1% and 6.4%, respectively. Irritability(78.8%), fatigue(76.4%), and emotional sensitivity(69.8%) were common premenstrual symptoms, and functional impairment in academic performance(67.1%) was dominant. Dysmenorrhea[odd ratio(OR)=3.68, 95% confidence interval(CI) 2.45-5.55], family history of PMS(OR=1.91, 95% CI 1.35-2.71), and use of oral contraceptive (OR=1.85, 95% CI 1.16-2.94) were associated with the increased risk of PMS/PMDD after adjustment for depression and anxiety. Negative attitude to menses(OR=15.60, 95% CI 3.61-67.42) was associated with the increased risk of PMS/PMDD, particularly in subjects without depression and anxiety. Conclusions : PMS was common, as the frequency of PMS more than moderate severity including PMDD exceeded 25%, and disrupted daily functioning in adolescents. PMS is associated with various sociodemographic and menstrual characteristics, and these associations are affected by comorbid depression and anxiety.

This research was conducted to determine the effects on knowledge about menstruation, coping with menstruation, menstrual symptom of middle school students after they received Health Behavior-based PMS Intervention Education. By using a non-equivalent control group pretest and posttest design, the experiment was conducted with a test group of 31 students and a control group of 33 students. There were statistically significant increases in knowledge about menstruation and coping with menstruation in the experimental group compared to the control group. From these finding, Health Behavior-based PMS Intervention Education for middle school students is effective and the development of such PMS Intervention Education is desirable in terms of health care.

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between perceived stress, ego-resilience, and premenstrual syndrome(PMS) and investigate the factors affecting PMS in female college students. The study participants were 215 female college students in Gyeunggi province. Data were collected from October 10 to November 10, 2017, using self-report questionnaires. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analysis. PMS was positively correlated with the perceived stress and negatively correlated with ego-resilience. Eating habits, interference with daily life by menstruation, perceived stress accounted for 44.4% of variance in PMS. Based on these results, it is necessary to develop a management program that integrates psychological factors and lifestyle improvement including dietary habits, as well as efforts to manage menstrual symptoms in order to alleviate the premenstrual syndrome of female college students.

Objectives : Objectives of this study was to explore the relationships between anger, alexithymia and premenstrual syndrome(PMS). Methods The subjects included 125 women with PMS and 58 women with non-PMS assessed by Daily record of Severity of Problems(DRSP) and Shortened Premestrual Assessment Form(SPAE). Anger level was assessed by anger expression scale. The level of alexithymia was assessed by Toronto alexithymia scale. We compared the scores of anger, alexithymia between PMS group and no-PMS group. Results : The mean scores of anger in(p=0.04), anger total(p=0.01) were significantly higher in women with PMS compared to control subjects. and the mean scores of alexithymia(p=0.04) were also significantly higher in women with PMS compared to control subjects. Conclusions : This study showed that the level of anger and alexithymia could be higher in women with PMS compared to control subjects, and that symptoms of PMS could be associated with anger and alexithymia. therefore, It would be better to consider the level of anger and alexithymia in treating and evaluating women with PMS.

This study was conducted to understand the effects of openness, positive acceptance, physical symptoms, reaction, and emotional sensitivity among adolescents' attitudes toward menstruation, and academic stress on premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea. A questionnaire of 126 high school girls who agreed to participate in the study was analyzed. As a result, the subject's premenstrual syndrome score was 22.48 points and dysmenorrhea was 4.66 points, and it was found that the higher the amount of menstruation, the higher the score of premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea. Factors affecting premenstrual syndrome were openness, physical symptoms, reaction, and emotional sensitivity, and the explanatory power of these variables was 49.9%. In addition, positive acceptance and physical symptoms had a significant effect on dysmenorrhea in adolescents, and explanatory power was 66.3%.

This study identified the effect of menstrual attitude, life stress and clinical practice stress on premenstrual syndrome of nursing students. Data were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 program using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and simple linear regression. Premenstrual syndrome was significantly negative correlated with menstrual attitude (r=.28, p=.004), positive correlated with life stress (r=.31, p=.001) and clinical practice stress (r=.29, p=.003). The factors that influence premenstrual syndrome were regular exercise (β=.-.18, p=.006) and dysmenorrhea (β=.51, p=.000), which explained 38.0%.

Objectives:Within the normal reproductive cycles of women, dramatic fluctuations of sexual hormones occur in the premenstrual and menopausal periods. In both periods, women are vulnerable to mood disturbances and show several somatic complaints. Based on these common clinical profiles and physiological changes, a relationship between vasomotor symptoms and the premenstrual syndrome has been suggested. However, attempts to establish such a link have yielded inconclusive results. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between histories of premenstrual syndrome and menopausal vasomotor symptoms within different menopausal stages. Methods:This cross-sectional study recruited Korean women aged 45-64 years who were perimenopausal and postmenopausal from 16 branch offices of the Korean Association of Health Promotion. All subjects completed self-report questionnaires that asked about a history of premenstrual syndromes, vasomotor symptoms, and several other variables. Results:A total of 1054 participants(361 perimenopausal women and 693 postmenopausal women) completed the study. Severity of premenstrual symptoms significantly correlated with postmenopausal vasomotor symptoms, only in late perimenopausal(r=0.213, p=0.010) and early postmenopausal women(r=0.246, p<0.001). After adjusting for several factors related to vasomotor symptoms, a history of premenstrual syndrome was a significant predictor of moderate to very severe vasomotor symptoms in late perimenopausal(OR=5.197, p=0.005) and early postmenopausal women(OR=3.017, p=0.010). Conclusions:This study suggests that a history of premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder is differentially associated with vasomotor symptoms in the menopausal stage. Prospective studies with larger population are needed to confirm these findings
