Broadband Quasi-Yagi Antenna with a Ring-type Balun for Indoor DTV Reception (링형 밸런을 이용한 실내 DTV 수신용 광대역 준-야기 안테나)

  • In this paper, we studied a design method for a broadband 3-element quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) for indoor digital television (DTV) reception. The proposed QYA employs a novel balun between a microstrip (MS) line and a coplanar strip (CPS) line feeding the driver dipole. The proposed balun is constructed by connecting the end of MS line to CPS line through a shorting pin, and the CPS and ground reflector are connected through a circular ring-type conductor. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV. The antenna fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a size of $270mm{\times}150mm$ showed a good performance such as a frequency band of 470-820 MHz for a voltage standing wave ratio < 2, a gain > 4.0 dBi, and a front-to-back ratio > 8.4 dB over the DTV frequency band.

Design of Ultra-Wide Band Antenna with Compact MCR Structure for BW Enhancement (대역폭 향상을 위한 소형 MCR 구조를 갖는 Ultra-Wide Band 안테나 설계)

  • This paper presents a low profile multi circular ring with different radius, patch antenna with modified feed line and slotted ground. The size of the antenna is $15{\times}12mm^2$, having electrical dimensions of $0.14{\lambda}{\times}0.12{\lambda}$ (at lower initial frequency) and footprints of $180mm^2$. The proposed antenna covers 3.1 to 12.3 GHz, reflection coefficient up to -38 dB with Bandwidth ratio of 4.13:1 and fractional Bandwidth of 122%. Bandwidth dimension ratio has been calculated (which is 6246) as a proof for compact size. Thin slots introduced on the feed line provide good impedance matching for whole frequency band. Numerical simulations of the proposed antenna are reported in terms of reflection coefficient ${\leq}-10dB$, vswr 2:1, radiation pattern and group delay (ns). The proposed antenna has advantage of very small size along with better impedance match that provides a practical approach to realize it for BW enhancement and UWB applications.

  • In this paper, a design method for a quasi-Yagi antenna (QYA) suitable for UHF band is studied. Due to the mutual coupling between a coplanar strip (CPS)-fed planar dipole and a conducting strip director placed close to the dipole, the dipole obtains broadband characteristics. A ground reflector improves gain in the lower frequency band, and the antenna size might be reduced by employing a bent reflector. The balun between the CPS line and the microstrip(MS) line is constructed by connecting the end of MS line and the CPS line through a shorting pin. In addition, a ring-type conductor connects the CPS line and reflector. The effects of various geometrical parameters and balun on the antenna characteristics are examined. An antenna, as an design example for the proposed antenna, is designed for the operation in the frequency band of 470-806 MHz for terrestrial DTV.

Design of GPS Receiving Antenna Installed in a Missile's Warhead (미사일 탑재형 GPS 안테나 설계)

  • A GPS receiving antenna installed in the missile's warhead is designed and fabricated at a center frequency 1.575 GHz. The circular shaped antenna is installed in the middle of the warhead where the antenna's patch and the ground plane are connected with a hollow cylindrical shaped short pin. Using the dual feeding and phase difference method, an omni-directional radiation pattern which direction is normal to the missile's axis(H-plane) is obtained. The optimized diameters of the circular patch and the cylindrical ring typed shorting pin of the GPS receiving antenna which use the FR4.material(dielectric constant $\varepsilon_r=4.6$) are 59.5 mm and 14 mm, respectively. The cylindrical body with diameter 100 mm and height 500 mm is attached to the lower part of the warhead in order to complete the missile figure. The radiation patterns are measured by changing the angle and phase between the dual feeding points. When the phase difference of dual feeding is $100^{\circ}$ and the angle between the dual feeding points is $100^{\circ}$, the nearly omni-directional radiation pattern in the H-plane is obtained. In this case, the antenna gain is -5.55 dBd and the relative level difference between the maximum and the minimum radiation intensity is 3.98 dB.

  • When the crew or passengers fall into the water due to marine accident of vessel, it is very important to rescue them quickly. In the case of marine accidents, most people in distress have been wearing a lifejacket, so if the GPS and Cospas-Sarsat communication module will be integrated within the lifejacket, it is easy to rescue them. In this paper, development of the dual band lifejacket-integrated antenna for GPS and Cospas-Sarsat communication is discussed. The antenna with the FR-4 substrate of 0.2mm thickness for flexibility was designed that it can be fitted close to the shoulder of the life jacket and operate at 1.575GHz and 406MHz. The GPS communication antenna was implemented with a ring-slot antenna having a circular polarized characteristic and a meander type linear polarized antenna is used as Cospas-Sarsat communication. The two antennas are fed by a single microstrip line and an open stub is used to minimize the mutual interference between the two antennas. The performance of the fabricated antenna attached to the life vest is confirmed by the measurement of the return loss at GPS and Cospas-Sarsat frequency bands.

A Study on the Bandwidth Enhancement of a Microstrip Surface Wave Antenna With a Monopole Like Pattern (모노폴 방사패턴을 가지는 마이크로스트립 표면파 안테나의 대역폭개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a microstrip surface wave antenna(SWA) with a frequency selective surface structure(FSS) is designed and measured. A microstrip SWA has many advantages such as low profile, low weight, easy fabrication, and compatibility with monolithic microwave integrated circuits(MMIC). In addition, it has demonstrated monopole like beam patterns. The microstrip SWA consists of two parts : a center-fed modified microstrip patch to excite surface wave, and a periodic patches to support the propagation of the surface waves. To obtain wide bandwidth, the ring type parasitic element is inserted and the circular patch is selected for the unit element in FSS structure. Experimental results show that the microstrip SWA has monopole like beam patterns at 5.9GHz. Impedance bandwidth and gain is 12% and 5.6dBi.

A Multi-Polarization Reconfigurable Microstrip Antenna Using PIN Diodes (PIN 다이오드를 이용한 다중 편파 재구성 마이크로스트립 안테나)

  • In this paper, a multi polarization reconfigurable microstrip antenna that can be used selectively for four polarizations(vertical polarization, horizontal polarization, right hand circular polarization, left hand circular polarization) at the S-band is presented. The proposed antenna consists of four PIN diodes and a microstrip patch with a cross slot and a circular slot and is fed by utiliting electromagnetic coupling between the microstrip patch and the feed line. The proposed antenna has a DC bias network to supply DC voltage to each PIN diode and the polarization can be determined by controlling the ON /OFF states of four PIN diodes. The fabricated antenna has a VSWR below 2 in the vertical polarization(3.17~3.21 GHz), the horizontal polarization(3.16~3.20 GHz), the left hand circular polarization (3.08~3.19 GHz), and the right hand circular polarization(3.10~3.2 GHz) frequency bands. The designed antenna has the cross polarization level higher than 20 dB, a gain over 5 dBi for the linear polarization states, and 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth wider than 50 MHz in the circular polarization states.

  • In this paper, a direct $TM_{01}-TE_{11}$ mode converter of circular waveguide which is used the approximated design method of mode conversion between $TM_{01}$ and $TE_{11}$ modes is designed for radiation with the maximum directivity of high power energy into air (rom high power microwave antenna system. The proposed direct $TM_{01}-TE_{11}$ mode converter is calculated and designed with an approximated method for non-linear function about an extended non-constant serpentine type of circular waveguide. Then, the designed mode converter is optimized by length of 200 mm and efficiency above 95% by FIM simulation and achieved short length and high efficiency of the antenna by results of fabricated and measured characteristics.

Effects of Various Ventilation Systems on the Carbon Dioxide Concentration and Fruiting Body Formation of King Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii) Grown in Culture Bottles (새송이버섯 병재배에서 환기방법이 이산화탄소 농도 및 자실체형성에 미치는 영향)

  • In an attempt to establish the appropriate ventilation device for the bottle culture of king oyster mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii), we investigated carbon dioxide concentration and fruiting body formation according to the various ventilation systems within the mushroom house. In addition to, the efficiency of air circulation and growth rate as well as the appearance of physiologically abnormal phenotypes during their growth stage were also evaluated. four different ventilation devices, parallel-pressure type, positive-pressure type, negative-pressure type, and positive- and negative-pressure type were applied in this study. The positive-and negative-pressure type showed the highest efficiency of air circulation as $CO_2$ concentration was 800 ppm and the level of air current was relatively low compared to the other types (the $CO_2$ concentration of parallel-pressure type was 1,400 ppm). Moreover, the stipe length, the cap diameter, yield, and general quality grown in positive- and negative type ventilation device were also better than in the other three devices though it took slightly longer period for harvesting (18.4 days) than the others (17.6, 17.9 and 18.3 days). The appearance of physiologically abnormal phenotypes such as fruiting body lump, soft rot, and brown rot were significantly decreased in positive-and negative type compared to other types, while the appearance rates were not much different for other symptoms of bacterial ooze, stipe limb and stipe bumpy. In summary, we propose that the optimal ventilation system for the bottle culture of king oyster mushroom is positive- and negative type, and this device is expected to increase the total quality as well as yield all year around.

A study of ubiquitous-RTLS system for worker safety (작업자 안전관리를 위한 유비쿼터스-실시간 위치추적시스템 연구)

  • At the industrial work site, the manufacturing process is being automated to improve work efficiency. However, it is often difficult to automate the entire manufacturing process, and there are spaces in which workers there are constantly exposed to danger. To protect such workers from the danger, this paper studied a worker safety management system for the industrial work site which uses a location recognition system and which is based on the Ubiquitous-Wireless Sensor Network (U-WSN). Using wireless signals, the distance between two devices can be measured and the location of a worker can be calculated using triangularization in 3-D. But at the industrial work sites where there are a lot of steel and structures, errors occur due to signal reflection and multi-path, etc., which makes it difficult to get the accurate location. To address this problem the following was done: first, a circular polarization patch antenna appropriate to the work site was used to reduce the degree of error that may occur from the antenna emission pattern and the particular Line of Sight (LOS); second, a 3-D localization technique and a filtering algorithm were used to improve the accuracy of location determination. The developed system was tested by using it on a wharf crane to validate its accuracy and effectiveness. The proposed location recognition system is expected to contribute greatly in ensuring the safety of workers at industrial work sites.
