Rapid Determination of Selenium in Foodstuffs by Neutron Activation Analysis (방사화분석법에 의한 식품중의 Se의 정량)

  • The selenium content of a wide variety of Korean food was determined by neutron activation analysis. Most fruits and vegetables contained quantities of selenium less than $0.4{\mu}g/g$. Grain products varied widely in their selenium content with $0.5{\mu}g/g$ and barley cereal as high as $0.7{\mu}g/g$. Dried milk powder sample ranged from $0.7\;to\;0.15{\mu}g/g$. Chicken muscle contained about $0.7{\mu}g/g$. The content of sea food was generally higher, ranging from $0.3\;to\;3.65{\mu}g/g$. These values suggest that a diet well balanced in other nutrients is probably also nutritionally adequate with regard to selenium, although possible effects of cooking and biological availability remain to be investigated.

  • In this study, the effect of an acidic treatment on granular activated carbon (GAC) and activated carbon fibers (ACF) was investigated for a $Pb^{2+}$ and $Ni^{2+}$ ion adsorption. 1.0 M nitric acid solution was used as the acid solution for the surface treatment. Surface properties of the GAC and ACF were characterized by the pH, elemental analysis and pHpzc (pH of the point of zero charge). Their specific surface area and the pore structure were also evaluated by the nitrogen adsorption data at 77K. As a result, the acidic treatment led to an increase of the oxygen-containing functional groups. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of the acid-treated GAC and ACF was improved in the order of acidic-ACF > untreated-ACF > acidic-GAC > untreated-GAC, though the decrease in specific surface area induced by a pore blocking of the functional groups was observed.

Preliminary study on geochemical elements concentration changes in coral skeleton from Chuuk, Micronesia (마이크로네시아 축 경산호 골격의 지화학 원소 농도에 대한 예비연구)

  • We investigated metal concentrations and oceanic environment changes that have occurred over the past several years by studying the hard coral Porites lutea, which inhabits tropical and subtropical areas. Soft X-radiographs clearly showed distinctive annual bands within 71 mm coral sample, which reflect changes in the oceanic environment over this period. There were large fluctuations in the major and minor element concentrations. Considering the physicochemical partition coefficient, some elements accumulated in the aragonite matrix in a mechanical manner, while others were affected by environmental factors. The concentrations of some heavy metals varied over a wide range, implying local environmental effects. The variation of Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca in coral skeleton clearly showed large-scale fluctuation over the specific intervals, implying environmental changes during this period. The concentrations of heavy metals also show high fluctuations, and roughly accord with Mg/Ca variation. In addition, Cu and Zn seem to show cyclicity-like peaks, coincide with Mg/Ca variation over the specific intervals. Such variation might be related to local pollution and oceanographic changes. More detailed investigation is necessary, including the pretreatment of coral skeleton sediment.

  • The mechanisms of $CH_4$ uptake into and release from the ocean are not well understood due mainly to complexity of the biogeochemical cycle and to lack of regional-scale and/or process-scale observations in the marine boundary layers. Without complete understanding of oceanic mechanisms to control the carbon balance and cycles on a various spatial and temporal scales, however, it is difficult to predict future perturbation of oceanic carbon levels and its influence on the global and regional climates. High frequency, high precision continuous measurements for carbon isotopic compositions from dissolved $CH_4$ in the surface ocean and marine atmosphere can provide additional information about the flux pathways and production/consumption processes occurring in the boundary of two large reservoirs. This paper introduces recent advances on optical instruments for real time $CH_4$ isotope analysis to diagnose potential applications for in situ, continuous measurements of carbon isotopic composition of dissolved $CH_4$. Commercially available, three laser absorption spectrometers - quantum cascade laser spectroscopy (QCLAS), off-axis integrated cavity output spectrometer (OA-ICOS), and cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS) are discussed in comparison with the conventional isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). Details of functioning and performance of a CRDS isotope instrument for atmospheric ${\delta}^{13}C-CH_4$ are also given, showing its capability to detect localized methane emission sources.

Study on Physico-chemical Characteristics and Combustion Kinetics Solid Waste (생활쓰레기의 이화학적 특성 및 연소 속도론적 연구)

  • In this study the physico-chemical characteristics of solid waste and the thermagravimetric analysis of waste investigated. It was found that the combustible component, water and ash were 61%, 32%, 7% respectively. The amount of combustible component was much higher than those of others. It was shown that the total carbon and hydrogen of the waste 94% and the high heating value was 2897,883(Kcal/kg). The thermagravimetric analysis showed that the weight loss of wastes occurred as temperature increased, and the rate was higher in the temperature range of $300^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$.

  • Both concave and convex roof-end tiles having same style and shape are excavated in Yongjangsung castle at Jindo and Burnhwasa temple at Wando in Jeollanam-Do that are the Sambyulcho's resistance sites against Mongolia in the late Koryo dynasty. Obtained data by NAA have been used to classify the equality of a raw materials' porvenance by multiple correlation analysis(MCA) and discriminant analysis. The results of MCA has shown that there are very high correlation for [La : Sm], and [Lu : Yb]. Exactly pottery site at Chungdo, roof tile site at Chungyang, Yongjangsung castle and Bumhwasa temple and Chunghaejin site at Jangdo were distributed for four trace elements, Cr, Sc, ${\Delta}$(${\Sigma}$(Lu, Yb)) and Eu by discriminant analysis, and their accuracy is above 95%. This means that Yongjangsung castle and Bumhwasa temple have same raw material's provenance.

Effects of stabilizing elements on mechanical and electrochemical characteristics of stainless steel in marine environment (안정화 원소 첨가에 따른 스테인리스강의 기계적 특성과 해수환경 하에서의 전기화학적 특성)

  • Stainless steels stabilized with Ti or Nb are largely used in offshore and shipbuilding industries due to its excellent corrosion resistance. In this study, carbide stabilizers, Ti and Nb, were added to stainless steel 304 specimens with different concentrations(Ti: 0.26%, 0.71%, Nb: 0.29%, 0.46%, 0.71%), and their mechanical and electrochemical characteristics were evaluated. Micro-Vickers hardness testing was employed to characterize the mechanical characteristics with alloying elements. Electrochemical evaluation techniques including Tafel analysis, cyclic polarization experiment, galvanostatic experiment were utilized to compare the corrosion characteristics of the specimens. The result of hardness tests revealed that Nb containing specimens showed increasing hardness with increasing alloying contents while adding Ti had little effect on increase in hardness. In the case of electrochemical measurements, the electrochemical characteristics of the specimens were enhanced with increasing Nb contents while they were deteriorated with increasing Ti contents. As a result, different stabilizers and their contents may produce significant differences in electrochemical characteristics, and there such effect must be taken account of in development of stainless steels for marine environment.

  • 한국과학기술연구원에서는 2007년부터 시작된 중대형가속기구축사업을 통하여 3기의 정전형 가속기를 설치하였다. 1996년에 도입된 2.0 MV Pelletron을 비롯하여 신규 도입된 6 MVTandetron과 400 kV implanter 등 모두 3기의 정전형가속기로 30 keV부터 ~60 MeV까지의 단색 이온빔을 인출, 이용할 수 있는 실험설비의 구축이 완성되었다. 정전형가속기의 주요 활용분야는 femto~atto mole정도의 동위원소를 측정하는 가속기질량분석법(AMS)를 비롯하여 RBS/ERD로 대표되는 이온빔분석법(ion beam analysis, IBA) 그리고 고에너지 이온빔을 이용한 물질 개질분야(ion beam material modification, IBMM)로 크게 분류된다. 이 시설은 당 연구원의 연구 수요 뿐 아니라 국내 연구자의 수요를 아우르는 시설로 계획하고 있다. 여타 실험/분석장비와 달리 가속기시설은본체의 완성 후 활용목적에 맞춰 빔라인의 증설이 필요하며 최근 가장활용성이 큰 가속기질량분석(accelerator mass spectrometry, AMS)의 경우는 활용분야별 시료 전처리 시설과 기술의 개발이 요구된다. 따라서 KIST에서는 향후 수년간 활용 분야별 대표적인 주제를 선정하고 필요한 선행연구를 통하여 KIST 이온빔시설에 대한 연구자들의 접근편의성을 제고하고자한다. 본 발표에서는 지난 6년간의 수행된 가속기 시설의 개요와 함께 장차 수행할 선행연구의 방향과 내용을 소개한다(Figure capture).   • The trace elements in liver, kidney and testicle of rats were analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer(ICP-MS). Ten elements(Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, Cd, Pb, Bi, Th, U) were determined simultaneously and the detection limit of each elements was lower than ppb level.

Changes in Properties and Surface FT-IR Spectra of Wood Charcoal at Different Carbonization Temperatures (탄화온도에 따른 목탄 특성 및 표면의 FT-IR 변화)

  • To analyze the changes in pH and elemental content ratio of wood charcoal and in FT-IR spectra of their surfaces, wood charcoals carbonized from Pinus koraiensis were used. pHs of wood charcoals carbonized from Pinus koraiensis at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were 5-27 and 6.80, respectively, whereas they were between 9.25~10.35 for the wood charcoals manufactured between $500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ From the changes in the elemental ratios of Pinus koraiensis wood charcoal by increasing carbonization temperature, carbon (C) contents increased by elevating the carbonization temperature with the decreasing in content ratios of O and H. The largest changes in the ratio was found between the carbonization temperature 400 and $500^{\circ}C$. Ratios of C, O, H of the wood charcoal manufactured at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were 67.7, 28.9, 3.0% and 72.2, 24.9, 2.5%, respectively, while those at $500{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ were between 83.3~90.5, 13.6~9.0, 2.7~0.3%. The surface functional groups of Pinus koraiensis wood charcoals were determined by comparison of FT-IR spectra of the wood powder and the wood charcoal carbonized with the wood powder. The functional groups on the surface of wood charcoals carbonized at 300 and $400^{\circ}C$ were considered to be acidic groups like Lactone, Lactol, Carboxylic acid, Carboxylic anhydride, whereas Pyrone types could be the major functional groups for the wood charcoals carbonized between 500 and $900^{\circ}C$.
