  • Because heat exchanger consists of many circular tubes, the analysis of local heat transfer and pressure drop at the surrounding of circular tubes, performance and calculation of size, economics play important roles in design. In this study, This study conducted experiment and analysis in order to observe convective heat transfer coefficient LMTD (logarithm mean temperature difference) and pressure losses according to water temperature and air flow rate using a cross flow heat exchanger of staggered arrangement. This heat exchanger was composed of staggered arrangement for five rows and seven columns of tube banks, and the condition of experiment and analysis are $40{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ of water temperature and $5.0{\sim}12.3m^3/s$ of air flow rate. As a result of it, since air density decreases as water temperature and flow rate increases, Reynolds number decreases with characteristics of low flow velocity but mean heat transfer coefficient increases with air flow rate increase, heat transfer performance has been improved and pressure losses decreased. And since heat transfer rate shows about 8~12% and pressure drop around 0.01~7.5% error as the analysis result, the feasibility of this study could be evaluated.

  • The change of the vorticity and the temperature distribution in heat exchanger tube bank were analyzed for the flows with the constant inlet velocity and the sinusoidal inlet velocity. The flow frequency characteristics were examined by analyzing power spectral density of lift and drag at a typical circular tube in the tube bank. Karman vortex street could be seen at the upstream region of tube bank for the case of constant inlet velocity. It could be seen that the Karman vortex street was affected by the change of inlet velocity near the circular tubes for the case with the sinusoidal inlet velocity. It was observed that the unsteady temperature distributions for both inlet velocity conditions had almost the same motion as the flow vorticity behavior. The flow frequency for the case with the constant inlet velocity is 37.25Hz, and that with the sinusoidal inlet velocity, the flow frequency is 18.63Hz, which is equal to the sinusoidal inlet velocity. The mean surface Nusselt number(Nu) for overall heat exchanger tube bank was 1051 for the case with the constant inlet velocity and 1117 for the case with the sinusoidal inlet velocity. From the result of heat transfer analysis, it could be seen that Nu with the sinusoidal inlet velocity showed 6.3% increase than that with the constant inlet velocity.

  • Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical tube have been investigated by experiment. Before the test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. A smooth tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as a test tube. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 212 to 530 kg/$m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to 20$^{\circ}C$, and heat fluxes of 20 to 45 kW/$m^2$. As the vapor quality and mass fluxes increase, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are decreased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase.

  • Natural convection of a magnetic fluid is different from that of Newtonian fluids because magnetic body force exists in an addition to gravity and buoyancy. In this paper, natural convection of a magnetic fluids (W-40) in annular pipes was studied by experimentally. Inside wall was kept at a constant temperature (25 $^{\circ}C$), and outside wall was also held at a constant but lower temperature (20 $^{\circ}C$). The magnetic fields of various magnitude were applied up. This study has resulted in the following fact that the natural convection of a magnetic fluids was controlled by the direction and intensity of the magnetic fields.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the time mean velocity distribution, the time mean kinetic energy, and the time mean turbulence intensity between vertical and horizontal flow fields in a coaxial circular pipe by PIV measurement. Experiments are performed at a Reynolds number 2,000, measuring regions divided as the section regions A, B, C, D in flow fields. The angle of the high-frequency ultrasonic is selected in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ to the flow axes and it is reflected several times. In results, it is clarified that the effect of gravity is given in the vertical flow field compared with the horizontal flow field and the ultrasonic affects the turbulence enhancement. And kinetic energy and turbulence intensity with ultrasonic are shown slightly bigger than those in flow field without it.

  • The fully developed turbulent momentum and heat transfer induced by the square-ribed roughness elements on the inner wall surface in concentric annuli is studied analytically based on a modified turbulence model. The analytical results of the fluid flow is verified by experiment. The resulting momentum and heat transfer are discussed in terms of various parameters, such as the radius ratio, the relative roughness, the roughness density, fluid Reynolds number and for heat transfer, fluid Prandtl number. The study demonstrates that certain artificial roughness elements may be used to enhance heat transfer rates with advantages from the overall efficiency point of view.

  • Heat transfer characteristics were investigated for the falling film flowing down the outside of an electrically heated vertical tube. Water was used for the falling film, and its Reynolds number was varied in the range of 70~500. Because water is heated and evaporated as it flows down, both sensible and latent heat transfer should be considered. The effect of the surrounding air movement was investigated by changing the direction of the air injection; without air injection, parallel-flow, and counter-flow. For all cases, sensible teat transfer rate was almost linearly increased with the increasing film flow rate. It was found that the film heat transfer coefficient was hardly influenced by the parallel air flow. However, the counter-flow of air reduced the heat transfer coefficient, which might be caused by the uneven distribution or flooding of the film. At high heat flux, a sudden change of the film heat transfer coefficient was detected as the film flow rate reached the transition value. It is supposed that this phenomenon was caused by the change in the film flow pattern.

  • An experimental study has been performed to investigated the forced convection heat transfer characteristics of 6 circular cylinders in staggered arrangement in a cross flow of air. The water scale deposited on condenser wall of power plant was used to investigate the effect of roughness of scaled surfaces. The relative roughness*average diameter of scale/cylinder diameter) was in a range of k/d=0.0066, 0.0111, 0.0167, 0.0222 and 0.0278. The cylinder spacings(L/d) varies from 1.5 to 4.0 where L denote the cylinder spacings along and normal to the upstream uniform flow direction. The Reynolds number was varied in a range of 10, 000$\leq$ Re $\leq$ 50,000. The local and mean Nusselt numbers were investigated as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number. The results are compared with those of clean cylinder and inline tube bank, subsequently the mean fouling resistance over the entire circumference was estimated from those results as a function of scale roughness, the cylinder spacing and Reynolds number.

  • Magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) is a versatile flow visualization technique using magnetic resonance imaging machine developed for the medical purpose. Recently, MRV is often utilized to analyze engineering flows due to its superior features of MRV such as capabilities of measuring flows with complicated, opaque flow geometry unlike optical techniques, 3-dimensional volumetric velocity vectors within a few hours, and etc. The purpose of this study was to validate the MRV data and evaluate the accuracy of the mean velocity profiles that we acquired for a turbulent flow in a circular pipe using a MR machine installed in Korea Basic Science Institute, Ochang, Korea. In addition, we briefly describe a procedure of parameter optimization for the operation of MRV. The results indicate that the MRV measurements provided well resolved mean velocity fields with a quite reasonable accuracy according to the inner and outer layer scaling laws of the turbulent pipe flows.

  • A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a circular disk in a circular tube is analyzed. The circular disk is located coaxially with the circular tube and the Hagen-Poiseuille flow exists at upstream and downstream far from the circular disk. The Stokes approximation is used and the flow is investigated analytically by using the method of eigenfunction expansion and the method of least square. From the analysis, the stream function and the pressure of the flow field are obtained, and the streamlines and pressure distribution are shown. Also, the pressure and shear stress distributions on the circular disk and circular tube wall are calculated, and shown for some typical radii of the circular disk. The additional pressure drop induced by the disk and the drag force exerted on the disk are compared as functions of the radius of the circular disk, and it is shown that the shear force on the wall of the tube increases due to the disk.
