  • The purpose of this paper is to establish the basic procedure and method for selection of preferred anti-fouling paint considering economic analysis according to ship's speed loss based on ISO 19030 that has been published in 2016 to prescribe practical methods for measuring changes in ship specific hull and propeller performance. In this study, six (6) anti-fouling paint products have been assumed for alternatives with each target maximum average speed loss and carried out comparison of the alternatives and sensitivity analysis in assumed conditions for selection of the preferred alternative.

  • This study is about the prediction of ship's roll motion characteristic which has been used for evaluating ship's seakeeping performance. In order to obtain the ship's roll RAO during voyage, this paper utilized machine learning-based surrogate model. By comparing the prediction result data of surrogate model with test data, we suggest the best approximation technique and data sampling interval of the surrogate model appropriate for predicting the ships' roll motion characteristic.

  • The tug boat is restricted in her maneuvering ability due to the towed barge, and tug-barge have been strongly affected by the external forces, i.e. the wind, wave, currents, and so on. Therefore it is difficult to get the safety if tug-barge operation. In this study, we propose the basic method to develope the safety towing system for barge using portable GPS which is easily movable and relatively inexpensive. Then we have conducted the test on the real barge and discuss the results.

  • In response to the growing domestic request and the change of the overseas environment, Hyundai Maritime Research Institute has recently established a three-stage development plan for the high speed marine transportation system. As the first stage plan, the long-range high-speed foil catamaran passenger ship has been designed and constructed for the open-sea serivice of 800 nautical miles round trip with top speed above 40 knots. Extensive theoretical analyses and model tests were systematically carried omit along the course of design for the system optimization and the verification. In this paper, the brief summary of the design and the construction works shall be presented.

  • A mathematical model for the hydrodynamic forces acting on the ship manoeuvring in waves is formulated and a numerical method for the problem is developed. The motion of a ship, which manoeuvres in waves, may be thought to have two components; one is a high frequency component due to encounter waves, and the other is a low frequency component due to manoeuvring motion. So the method of two time scale expansion is used to divide linear boundary value problem. For the effects of waves on the manoeuvring motion of a ship, only the second order drift forces are considered. The integral equation for the velocity potential is solved by 3 dimensional panel method and hydrodynamic forces are calculated by direct integral method.

  • It is easy for a ship passing through confined waters to be exposed in dangers of collisions and grounding due to different hydrodynamic responses. Since marine accidents can cause significant impacts on environments, global economy, and human lives, it is necessary to study the effect of shallow water on hydrodynamic performance of a ship. In this paper, the effect of water depth on resistance performance was investigated using CFD analysis as an initial study for improving navigational safety of a large container ship under confined waters. After a CFD set-up for deep water condition was validated and verified by comparing CFD analysis with model test results, CFD calculations according to ship speed and water depth were conducted. The features were investigated in terms of tendency and physical knowledge related to resistance performance. The increase of resistance due to shallow water effect was reviewed with empirical formula suggested from SWABE JIP. Speed loss due to shallow water effect was additionally reviewed from estimated delivered power according to ship speed and water depth.

  • In this paper, a robust transfer alignment method is proposed for a strapdown inertial navigation system(SDINS) with norm-bounded parametric uncertainties. The uncertainties are described by the energy bound constraint, i.e., sum quadratic constraint(SQC). It is shown that the SQC can be coverted into an indefinite quadratic cost function in the Krein space. Krein space Kalman filter is designed by modifying the measurement matrix and the variance of measurement noises in the conventional Kalman filter. Since the proposed Krein space Kalman filter has the same recursive structure as a conventional Kalman filter, the proposed filter can easily be designed. The simulation results show that the proposed filter achieves robustness against measurement time delay and high dynamic environment of the vehicle.

  • In Korea, tuna purse seine fishery is the industry with the highest production volume in domestic deep-sea fishery. Research has been continuously carried out since the late 1980s, and research on modernization of technology has been actively conducted. However, while auxiliary works boats on the fishing vessels play an important role in the purse seine fishing, related research is not sufficient. In this study, we tried to rebuild the propulsion system of the Net-boat from the propeller to the waterjet type and to perform the hull form conversion to improve the resistance performance of the hull part and improve the motion performance. For this, we calculated the change of the fluid performance of the ship through computational numerical analysis. In addition, towing tank tests were carried out to verify the performance of the existing ship and the ship which changed the propulsion system. As a result, resistance performance of the waterjet type compared to the propeller type was improved by approximately 45 %. It was confirmed that this was due to reduction of the wetted surface area by removing net and improvements in hull form.

  • A variety of appendages are attached to coastal and offshore fishing boats to improve stability during navigation or fishing operations (stability performance and roll reduction). These appendages are generally classified into three types, which are shown in Fig. 1. The numerical calculations were conducted for the following eight cases: one case of a bare hull, three cases where a single appendage attached, three cases of a pair of appendages attached, and one case where all three appendages were attached. Table 1 presents the main dimensions of the bare hull and Table 2 describes the main dimensions of the three appendages. The fluid dynamic performance with regard to the three hull appendages was evaluated via CFD for the following cases: each of the appendages attached independently, a pair of appendages attached, and all three appendages attached simultaneously. The No. 1 appendage showed that pressure resistance was proportionally greater than friction resistances. Both Nos. 2 and 3 appendages showed comparable levels of pressure and friction resistances. The correlation between appendages was minimal in the case of pairs and Comparing the cases of the No. 2 appendage attached and all appendages attached, at 11 kn, the EHP showed an difference of 9 %.
