  • Urban Air Mobility is expected to resolve some problems in urban transportation such as traffic congestion and air pollution. Various studies for a large-scale commercialization of UAM are being actively conducted. To that end, the UAM Traffic Management system aims at securing a safety and an efficiency of UAM operations. In this study, a risk assessment model is proposed to evaluate the risk of collision between a vehicle and surrounding obstacles. The proposed model is conceived from the past studies for determining a proper separation distance between parallel runways for their independent operations. The model calculates the risk that the surveillance system fails to meet a target level of safety for a given buffer zone size between a designed route and surrounding obstacles. The model is applied to one of the routes proposed in K-UAM roadmap to evaluate its performances.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze pilots' safety consciousness and grit level, and the correlations between them. Participants were 142 pilots for pilot qualification (n=78), certification 1 (n=12), and 2 (n=52) level. The data were gathered from questionnaire for safety consciousness and grit scale from April to August 2022. Statistical treatment were processed (by SPSS 21.0 for windows) by descriptive analysis for all variables. One-way ANOVA was processed for analyze pilots' safety consciousness and grit scale by their groups. And the correlations were analyzed for investigating relations between them. Statistical significancy was set as p<.05. The results were as follows. First, pilots' safety consciousness showed higher trend in certification 1, qualification and certification 2 as considerable. The grit scale showed higher trend in qualification, certification 2 and 1 in order. The grit and its subfactor passion showed significance (p<.05). Second, the correlations among factors showed significance(p<.05). Conclusionly, safety consciousness was importantly recognized to the certification 1(F-4/5) pilots and grit to qualification pilots. The limit of this research was in small sample size, although need further study for practical using.

  • With the continuous increase in demand for air transport services and the growth of the air transport industry, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and its member states are facing social demands to expand the capacity of the air transport system and improve the efficiency of its operation. ICAO developed the concept of Performance Based Navigation (PBN) for the purpose of solving problems related to the function and performance of the navigation system. Member countries established an implementation plan in accordance with the resolutionof the ICAO General Assembly, and South Korea established a Performance-Based Navigation implementation plan in December 2009. This paper evaluates the progress made so far based on Korea's Performance-Based Navigation implementation plan and proposes a development direction for Performance-Based Navigation based on changes in the international environment.

  • In this study, the correlation analysis between total system error and environmental factor variables was performed to confirm the effect on the performance of the integrated navigation system by various environmental factors. To collect flight data of hybrid vertical take-off and landing UAVs, scenarios including various turning sections and straight sections such as left turn, right turn, turning rate, and path change angle were selected, and environmental data of wind direction, wind speed, temperature, air pressure, and humidity were collected in real time through weather station. As a result of the correlation analysis between the collected flight data and environmental data, it was concluded that the performance of the integrated navigation system by environmental factors within the collected data was not significant affected and was robust.

  • As our whole society has become increasingly aware of safety and emphasizes the importance of preventing safety accidents, the airline cabin service sector is also facing a strong demand to improve practical system for aviation safety education. In this regard, the development of appropriate safety education programs and the getting of human resources who can develop and operate such programs are becoming key issues. This study aims to provide academic and practical implications for safety education and training in airline cabins by reconfirming the importance and direction of safety education in the context of airline cabin services, and by specifying and establishing qualification requirements for personnel who develop and operate such safety programs. To this end, we review the content that should be included in safety training programs, the qualifications required of developers, managers, instructors, and examiners who develop or operate such programs, and how safety training programs can be continually improved as relevant conditions change in the future. In addition, we have also suggested ways to train appropriate managers, instructors, and examiners, including improving the compensation system for them, and how to effectively manage trainees. In order to secure a higher level of aviation safety in the future, it will be necessary to continue research on the development of more diverse and high-quality aviation safety education programs and the training of related personnel.

  • Not only in aviation industry but also in other industries, safety data plays a key role to improve the level of safety performance. By analyzing safety data such as aviation safety report (text data), hazard can be identified and removed before it leads to a tragic accident. However, pre-processing of raw data (or natural language data) collected from each site should be carried out first to utilize proactive or predictive safety management system. As air traffic volume increases, the amount of data accumulated is also on the rise. Accordingly, there are clear limitation in analyzing data directly by manpower. In this paper, a topic prediction model for aviation safety mandatory report is proposed. In addition, the prediction accuracy of the proposed model was also verified using actual aviation safety mandatory report data. This research model is meaningful in that it not only effectively supports the current aviation safety mandatory report analysis work, but also can be applied to various data produced in the aviation safety field in the future.

  • Recently, various urban problems are expected to arise due to the concentration of urban population and acceleration of urbanization, and UAM, a new air transportation method, is emerging to solve these problems. Currently, the world is actively conducting research and development on UAM technology, infrastructure, and systems to commercialize UAM. Although UAM is expected to develop in a similar way to the air transportation industry, research on the human factors of UAM for safe UAM operation and accident prevention is insufficient. In this study, to ensure safe operation of UAM, the human factors of UAM-PSU were identified and presented using the AHP technique targeting aviation experts. In addition, a comparative analysis of the human factors of PSU and air traffic controllers was conducted through relative importance analysis, and an efficient management plan for important human factors was presented.

  • Aircraft ground services are essential to the aviation industry and aviation services, yet management systems and improvement measures for operations and safety have not been adequately addressed in the revision of the old aviation law. This study utilized structural equation modeling and the UTAUT model to analyze the perceived acceptance of smart safety technologies among ground handling service workers. The findings indicated that perceived ease of use had a more significant than perceived usefulness impact on the acceptance of smart safety technologies among ground handling service workers. In light of these findings, it is recommended that the aviation safety management authority establish a policy vision for the adoption of smart safety technologies and consider implementing measures such as the introduction of smart safety technology test beds to enhance safety management and work efficiency of aircraft ground handling services.
