  • The number of traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers over the age of 65 has surged over the past ten years from 37,000 to 274,000 cases. The proportion of elderly drivers' accidents has jumped 3.1 times from 1.2% to 3.7% out of all traffic accidents, and traffic safety organizations are pursuing diverse measures to address the situation. Above all, connecting safety measures with an in-depth research on behavioral and physical characteristics of elderly drivers will prove vital. This study conducted an empirical research linking the driving characteristics and traffic accidents by elderly drivers based on the Driving Aptitude Test items and traffic accident data, which enabled the measurement of behavioral characteristics of elderly drivers. In developing the Influence Model, we applied the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) regression model and selected an accident prediction model based on the Bayesian Influence in regards to the ZIP regression model and the zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) regression model. According to the results of the AAE analysis, the ZIP regression model was more appropriate and it was found that three variables? prediction of velocity, diversion, and cognitive ability? had a relation of influence with traffic accidents caused by elderly drivers.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide some basic information for elderly driving safety, by analyzing the current state. This study analyzed 128 survey questionnaires given to senior welfare center user in P city and evaluated Montreal Cognitive Assessment Korean Version(MoCA-K) and Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination(NCSE) for checked 41 owner drivers by questionnaires. 32% of total elderly persons was owner driver, and 56.1% of elderly drivers was driving everyday. 56.1% of elderly persons was driving for 1-2hours per day. 46.3% of elderly persons was using a car for leisure activity and 31.7% of elderly drivers was experienced a car accident. As cognitive function evaluation, some elderly drivers showed scores lower than average in subcategories of cognitive functions for driving a car. So, methodical evaluation system for accurate evaluation of deficit ability and driving re-education system will be required for safety driving of elderly person. In future, a legal approach of government as driver licence management and renewal system will be required for safety driving of elderly person.

  • This study examines how anonymity between drivers affects aggressive driving and why, in an anonymous situation, some drive aggressively and others do not. Two surveys were conducted. The first survey covered 200 participants and found that people are more likely to drive aggressively in an anonymous situation than in a face-to-face situation. The second survey covered 384 participants with a history of aggressive driving and found that these aggressive drivers could be classified into three groups using a two-step cluster analysis. Drivers who often exhibit aggressive driving in anonymous situations were found in the second questionnaire to have a high tendency towards driving anger and towards ambivalence over emotional expressiveness. The tendency towards self-defensive ambivalence factor, one of the factors in the ambivalence over emotional expressiveness questionnaire, was also found to be high. Individuals who tended to drive aggressively in an anonymous situation were found to be susceptible to driving anger, usually faced ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and typically were indecisive. The results of this study suggest that rather than intensifying the enforcement of traffic regulations, a better remedy for those who drive recklessly would be to have them undertake some candid self-reflection.

  • Transportation culture is an inseparable part of a group's overall culture. Since the term "transportation" is directly related to vehicular movement, I would like to propose the more general term: transportation culture and use that in the following paragraphs. Transportation culture is on one hand expressed by the consumers of transportation services reflecting their overall social culture and on the other hand taken into account by transportation professionals. Ministry of Land and Transportation conducted the Transportation Culture Index, a nationally representative survey, to assess a few key indicators of the degree to which ttransportation culture is valued and is being pursued every year. In this study, recommendation for TCI are explained based on theoretical framework and changing environment.

  • Traffic problems caused by drunk drivers have been steadily raised from the past. Even though the previous researches have focused on the development of countermeasures for preventing drunk driving, the number of drivers violating the DUI (Driving-Under-Influence) regulation is still increasing. Many studies seek countermeasures for preventing drunk driving by comparing the differences between general and drunk drivers. However, few researches have investigated focusing only on the characteristics of drunk drivers. It is well known that characteristics of general drivers are different from those of drunk drivers, and also habitual drunk drivers have different characteristics from non-habitual drunk drivers. Motivated by this fact, only the drivers who have violated DUI regulation are considered in the analysis. This study primarily aims to provide alternative solutions for reducing habitual drunk drivers who are highly inclined to do drunk driving repeatedly. For the analysis, various types of variables potentially effecting drunk driving behavior were investigated, and then truncated count data models were developed to analyze the effects of the variables selected on drunk driving. The results showed that 1) a truncated negative binomial model is better fitted to the data; and 2) five variables including experiential learning, the lack of self-control, self-reflection, the fear of crackdown, and the level of dependence on vehicles were found to be statistically significant.

  • In accordance with the development of various convergence devices, cameras are being used in many types of the systems such as security system, driver assistance device and so on, and a lot of people are exposed to these system. Therefore the system should be able to recognize the human behavior and support some useful functions with the information that is obtained from detected human behavior. In this paper we use a machine learning approach based on 2D image and propose the human behavior pattern recognition methods. The proposed methods can provide valuable information to support some useful function to user based on the recognized human behavior. First proposed one is "phone call behavior" recognition. If a camera of the black box, which is focused on driver in a car, recognize phone call pose, it can give a warning to driver for safe driving. The second one is "looking ahead" recognition for driving safety where we propose the decision rule and method to decide whether the driver is looking ahead or not. This paper also shows usefulness of proposed recognition methods with some experiment results in real time.

  • The present authors had conducted several researches(parking violation, traffic signal violation, speed violation, drunk-driving) on driving behaviors of the Korean people focused on cultural psychological perspective. This paper was designed to summarize these previous results. Although each research had dealt with different violation behaviors on driving, there were lots of similarities on the basis of violation. The results reveal the following rationale for incurring violation behaviors. First, most people reported that they violated the rule to pursuit short-term benefit. Second, the violators' psychological characteristics are described in terms of self-centered and self-justification. In addition, the respondents have justified their violated behaviors since the outcome is disadvantageous for the drivers. Furthermore, the violators' are found to possess a permissive attitude toward the other violators'. Finally, the implications of these studies were proposed. All of these findings were discussed in relation to the Korean culture.

  • This study was intended to recognize whether speed desire frustration influences in driving stress. Stress desire frustration is the difference between prefer speed and normal speed. As a result, driver's the prefer speed is higher than the normal speed on 4 road condition(high-way, urban-way, residential-way, rural-way). Also, driver's speed desire frustration caused statistical effect in driving stress on 4 road condition. speed desire frustration effect Driving Stress Scale(DSS) 5 sub-scale factors(progress obstacle, traffic circumstance, accident & regulation, regulation obedience, time pressure). This is that driver who experience much speed desire frustration creates high driving stress. Speed desire frustration analyzed high driver and low driver's Driving Stress Scale(DSS) score and overspeed regulation and traffic accident experience difference. As analysis result, speed desire frustration high driver driving stress high appear. However, difference of overspeed regulation experience or traffic accident experience by speed desire frustration did not appear.

  • Using driving simulator, we analyzed the driving behavior of an older driver on intersection and measured the pychological load to HRV. As a results, older drivers started to enter the more complex intersection on a great distance and on low velocity for safety driving. On the other hand, the value of HRV would be lower on more complex intersections. It suggested that an older driver allowed for his own losses of physiological and cognitive function and recognized low level of driving confidence relatively.
