  • A self-report evaluation is used to prevent driving accidents by elderly drivers. The majority of normal older adults may have mild cognitive impairment with reduced cognitive function. These depressed cognitive functions may be variables that affect the performance of elderly drivers. This study confirmed the cognitive functions that affect the self-reported evaluation for elderly drivers with mild cognitive impairment. Based on the results of the Korean Version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, 103 elderly drivers were classified into mild cognitive impairment and normal groups of elderly drivers. The Korean-Drivers 65 plus scores used in the self-reported evaluation of the two groups were compared, and the cognitive functions affecting the evaluation were analyzed. Results found the mild cognitive impairment group showed a significantly lower evaluation performance compared to the normal group, and the self-reported evaluation results of the elderly driver with mild cognitive impairment showed a significant correlation between visuoconstructional skills and delayed recall. As a result of regression analysis, the visuoconstructional skill was identified as the cognitive function with the strongest influence on the self-reported evaluation performance. Delayed recall was also found to have a partial effect but not at the level of altering the self-reported evaluation results of the elderly driver with mild cognitive impairment.

  • Conditional autonomous vehicles should hand over control to the driver according on driving situations. However, if the driver is immersed in a non-driving task, the driver may not be able to make suitable decisions. Previous studies have confirmed that the cues enhance take-over performance with a directional information on driving. However, studies on the effect of take-over cues on the driver's brain activities are rigorously investigated yet. Therefore, this study we evaluates the driver's brain activity according to the take-over cue. A total of 25 participants evaluated the take-over performance using a driving simulator. Brain activity was evaluated by functional near-infrared spectroscopy, which measures brain activity through changes in oxidized hemoglobin concentration in the blood. It evaluates the activation of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in the brain region. As a result, it was confirmed that the driver's PFC was activated in the presence of the cue so that the driver could stably control the vehicle. Since this study results confirmed that the effect of the cue on the driver's brain activity, and it is expected to contribute to the study of take-over performance on biomakers in conditional autonomous driving in future.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in the traffic environments and driving behaviors in 5 regions of Korea. Data were collected through the survey research from 1387 passenger car drivers in 14 locations in Korea. The main findings of this research are as followings: First of all, There were significant differences in traffic environment factors(road topography, construction, road & safety facilities, pedestrian behaviors, surrounding drivers) among 5 regional areas. When we examined drivers factors, there were significant differences among 5 metropolitan areas on wearing seat belt, most of constructions related to drink driving, speed-limit violation. There were many differences in driving habits, intentions, behaviors including wearing seat belt, driving after drinking according to metropolitan area, and also in case of speed-limit violation and careless driving behavior. These results suggested that there are many differences in traffic environments and driver's behaviors among regional areas. These result suggests that traffic safety policy and practice should be prepared based upon the peculiarities of regional area. We discussed these resulte in terms of the regional traffic policy and the suggestions for future studies were added.

  • In this paper, the feasibility for producing a plastic optical fiber sensor to be used as an anti-drowsy driving sensor is discussed. This sensor consists of a plastic optical fiber wound on the steering wheel covered by soft material. When a driver hold a steering wheel, the gripping force is induced and causes to the bend of the plastic optical fiber which decreases the power of light propagated inside the plastic fiber. The experimental results show that the detected optical power decrease as the gripping force increase and that this sensor can be used as the anti-drowsy driving sensor.

  • In this paper, we design and implement the contents transferring the location information between a customer and a proxy driver by utilizing 'WIPI.' Customers are able to request a call-service through a client in order to call a proxy driver. And, once a proxy driver who is most adjacent to the customer accepts the order of a call-service from him or her through a location-management server using the concepts of LBS and GPS, 'WIPI' sends the information about the location of the customer to the driver, and also sends information to the custome by calculating the distance from the driver to the customer. This content was modeled based on how information is transferred between a customer and a proxy driver under the mobile circumstance, and also a server and a client, made up from JAVA, were modeled by using SKT emulator.

  • Through this experiment driver's perception were measured. An analysis of the perception measurement result analyzed the subject's obstacle perception response time according to voltage patterns. The difference in the reaction time between men and women was also analyzed. Futhermore, the obstacle perception response time was analyzed according to the rate of the brightness of the headlamp. The relative delay time was analyzed In reference to times when there was no voltage change.

  • This paper defines the reliable based route choice Principle and formulates the reliability based equilibrium traffic assignment using the Principle. The reliability is defined as the difference of travel demand and capacity using the interference theory of the system engineering. An efficient solution a1gorithm based on Frank-Wo1fe algolithm is Presented to calculate and compare the reliability based traffic assignment with conventional travel time based assignment using small and large scaled road networks. The results show that reliability based traffic assignment converges to equilibrium solution in a reasonable computing time. The equilibrium link flows between reliability and travel time based traffic assignment differ each other in the sense that reliability based assignment is assigned based on the maximum difference of travel demand and link capacity whilst travel time based is assigned on the shortest travel time.

  • This paper presents biometrical driver verification system in car experiment through analysis of speech, and face information. We have used Mel-scale Frequency Cesptral Coefficients (MFCCs) for speaker verification using speech information. For face verification, face region is detected by AdaBoost algorithm and dimension-reduced feature vector is extracted by using principal component analysis only from face region. In this paper, we apply the extracted speech- and face feature vectors to an SVM kernel with Gaussian Mixture Models(GMM) supervector. The experimental results of the proposed approach show a clear improvement compared to a simple GMM or SVM approach.

  • This paper presents a human-centered control algorithm for personalized autonomous driving based on the integration of inverse time-to-collision and time headway. In order to minimize the sense of difference between driver and autonomous driving, the human-centered control technology is required. Driving characteristics in case that vehicle drives with the preceding vehicle have been analyzed and reflected to the longitudinal control algorithm. The driving characteristics such as acceleration, inverse time-to-collision, time headway have been analyzed for longitudinal control. The control algorithm proposed in this study has been constructed on Matlab/Simulink environment and the performance evaluation has been conducted by using actual driving data.

  • In modem society, car are the most important transportation. Thereby, car accidents has been increasing steadily. The driver is the biggest factor of car accident. Therefor, various studies about driver (reaction time, mentality, physiological signal, age, pattern of drive) are underway. In this paper, we design a embedded system for measuring the reaction time by driving skill. The proposed system is composed of measuring brake module, OBD-2 scanner and bluetooth transmission module. Also, we implement GUI program to analyze experiment result and database to store results. Though our proposed system, we can analyze driving skill.
