Relationships between Diversion Rates and Traffic Conditions on Expressways (고속도로 소통상황과 우회율과의 상관분석)

  • Due to increasing interest in dispersion of traffic flows through providing traffic information, there has been much research of driver behavior and effectiveness of diversion. In this paper the authors intend to analyze how a diversion was determined and its effects through correlation analysis between diversion rates estimated by actual surveys and the traffic conditions. Through speed-flow analysis, the diversion mechanism was found. When travel speed decreased, detour volume increased. Then when the traffic volume was decreased through an increase of diversion and traffic conditions got better, the detour volume decreased again. In addition, the authors found negative correlation between the diversion rate and travel speed through correlation analysis. It shows that there were various relationships between diversion rates and traffic conditions according to congestion level and direction of traffic. Finally, it is suggested that the regression equation for calculating the diversion rate with the traffic flows, travel speed, and travel time as variables has a coefficient of determination of 38.5%. It means that traffic conditions on expressways take about 40% of driver's decision-making for diversion.

A Methodology for Estimating Diversion Flows on Expressways (고속도로 우회교통량 추정방법론에 관한 연구)

  • VMS based dispersion of traffic flows enables to decrease delay and congestion. Such being the case, there has been growing interests in VMS operation strategy. The strategy is based on driver's behavior or diversion rate. However, it was not easy to obtain each in practice. The diversion rate, thus far, was investigated by stated preference analysis or simulators. As an alternative, in this paper, a new method to obtain diversion flow rate was suggested using the toll collection system and freeway traffic management system data. A large gap of diversion rate between stated preference analysis and field survey was observed. Out of surveyed 8 tollgate data, the diversion rate was about 7% and was quite lower compared with that of 21%${\sim}$87% from stated preference analysis or simulators. With this at hand, a more careful information provision strategy should be devised and employed to correctly account this kind of differences.

Throughput Analysis of Right Turn Shared Lane with Lane Width Change (차로폭에 따른 우회전 공용차로의 통과교통량분석)

  • This study is about throughput analysis of the shared right turn lane at signalized intersection with lane width change. It is expected that the increased width of the right turn shared lane causes to increase the volume of right turn on red(RTOR) In this study, the throughput computation is designed to take into account the lost time which is caused by the blocked right turn due to the stop of through traffic. The saturation flow rate of right turn using the rest of lane after through traffic stops is included as well. Results show that the different RTOR volume levels due to the various shared lane width leads to a difference in throughput. For the shared right turn lanes. throughput capacity for various lane widths is bigger than that of the KHCM as much as from 1.1 to 2.1 times.

  • The KHCM procedure is a micro level analysis at signalized intersections requiring a lot of input variables and complex computations. The research was to investigate the possibility of simplifying the analysis procedures by using the generalized or the combined variables that less influence on the adjusted traffic volume and through-car equivalents of left or right turns. It was also tried to make lane grouping into directional flow ratio(v/s) based on a field surveys. The maximum and minimum values of each variables were compared with each other through the KHCM analysis procedures in terms of control delay. The lane grouping and the synthetical influence of a simplified method was evaluated with the scenario built in prevailing maximum and minimum conditions. The study showed that the control delay was not significantly sensitive to the selected variables and the lane grouping and their synthetical influence as well.

Effectiveness Analysis on the Installation of Right-Turn Bypass Lane in Roundabout (회전교차로 우회전 별도차로 설치 효과 검토)

  • This study deals with the Right-Turn Bypass Lane in Roundabout. The purpose of the study is to comparatively analysis the effectiveness questions on the installation of right-turn bypass lane in roundabout. In pursuing the above, this study analyzed after and before of the right turn bypass lane plan by VISSIM software. The right turn bypass lane is formed by control type of yield and control type of joint were compared and analyzed the effects of the operation. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, after Right-Turn Bypass Lane is Installed, the traffic volume rate of the right-turn increasing by average delay time per vehicle is on the gradual decrease, maximum average about 28% with the fact that decreases. Second, control type of yield and control type of joint are both average delay time per vehicle decreasing by the traffic volume rate of the right-turn is on the gradual increase. Control type of joint was analyzed with the fact that has the maximum average about 18% delay decrement efficiency.

A Study on the Operational Efficiency of Intersection Shared Lanes (교차로 공용차로 운영 효율성 분석)

  • This study focuses on operational analysis of 2 types of intersection shared lanes. First, the analysis showed that a through & right-turn shared lane is always less used than the adjacent through-only lanes and as a result, operational efficiency deteriorates. To improve the efficiency fine-tuning in signal timing optimization using lane-by-lane traffic volume data is required. Further improvement can be achieved by guiding drivers to equally use the shared lane. For left-turn & U-turn shared lanes, it was found that saturation flow rate is affected by interference between U-turn and conflicting right-turn movements. However, since such interference does not occur in every cycle, a statistical model must be established to develop realistic adjustment factor for saturation flow rate of the shared lane.

  • The ATIS(Advance Traveler Information System), as one part of ITS, is a system aiming to disperse traffic volume on transportation networks by providing traffic information to transportation users on pre-trip and en-route trips. One of tools in ATIS is usage of VMS(Variable Message Signs). It provides to the drivers with direct information about state of processing direction. which is considered as the most effective method in ATIS. The purposes of providing VMS information are classified two categories. One is to provide simple information to drivers for their convenience. The other is to manage traffic demand to improve transportation network performance. However, for more effective and reliable VMS information, several strategies should be taken into account. The main VMS management strategy is "Traffic Diversion Strategy for minimum delay" when traffic congestion or incident are occurred. For effective operation. firstly. reasonable diversion traffic volume is determined by network traffic condition Secondly, it is necessary to make providing information strategy which reflects driver response behavior for controling diversion traffic volume. This paper focuses on the providing real-time route guidance information by VMS when congestion is occurred by the incidents. This sturdy estimates time-dependent system optimal diversion rate that inflects travel time and queue lengths using traffic flow simulation model on base Cellular Automata. In addition, route choice behavior models are developed using binary logit model for traffic information variable by traffic system controller. Finally, this study provides time-dependent VMS massage contents and degree of providing information in order to optimize the traffic flow.

A Study on the Efficiency of Multi-Legged Intersection Through Sensitivity Analysis (Based on the Four or Five Legged Intersection) (민감도 분석을 통한 다지교차로의 효용성 분석 연구 (4지.5지 교차로를 중심으로))

  • 본 연구는 민감도 분석을 통한 다지교차로의 효용성 분석 연구로 신호교차로, Roundabout, 그리고 Modern Roundabout의 특성을 고찰하고 교통류의 특성에 따른 민감도 분석을 통한 교차로 형태를 검토하는 것에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해, 첫째, 신호교차로와 Roundabout의 특성과 사례를 고찰하였다. 둘째, 4지교차로와 5지교차로의 교통류 특성별로 교통량을 산정하여, TSIS Tool을 이용한 분석을 통해 교통류 특성별 신호 교차로와 Round about의 민감도를 비교하였다. 셋째, 민감도 비교를 통한 교통류 특성별 효율적인 교차로 형태를 도출하였다. 4지교차로의 경우, 첫째, 일반적으로 V/C비의 변화에 대해 V/C비가 0.7이하일 때는 Roundabout가 V/C비가 0.7을 초과할 때는 신호교차로가 효율적인 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, V/C비별 회전교통량의 변화와 회전교통량 변화별 V/C비 변화에서도 V/C비의 변화의 분석결과와 비슷한 양상을 보였다. 5지교차로의 경우, 첫째, 4지교차로와는 달리 전반적으로 신호교차로 보다는 Roundabout가 더 효율적인 교차로 형태로 나타났다. 둘째, V/C비별 회전교통량의 변화와 회전교통량 변화별 V/C비 변화에서는 V/C비가 0.8을 초과하고 우회전교통량비가 30%∼40%인 경우에 신호교차로가 조금 더 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

Change in Road Traffic Demand after the Operation of Exclusive Median Bus Lane in Seoul (서울시 중앙버스전용차로 시행에 따른 도로교통 수요 변화)

  • 8 Exclusive Median Bus Lanes(EMBL) are operated in Seoul metropolitan city after the opening of Chon-ho section in 1996. But the changes in the road traffic demand on the direct and indirect influence area have not reported. In this paper, before and after survey and analysis of road traffic demand on 3 EMBLs opened in 2004 are conducted. In summary, the traffic demand of 3 EMBL road section decreased dramatically to 24.7% after the opening and then increased 1.4% after a year. The traffic demand of detour road decreased to 2.9% after the opening and then increased 0.3% after a year. Considering measurement error as ${\pm}5%$, Road traffic demands on the influence area of EMBL section are a stable state after one year. So it is presumed that the trip demand on EMBL section using vehicle does not make a detour around the influence area but divert into another transport modal.
