  • Using 492 older people in Chuncheon, this study examines whether social support is associated with depression of older people. Findings show that stress is positively associated with depression. Social support is negatively related to depression of older people. Analysis on the sources of social support reveals that all of the supports from families, friends, and important others are negatively associated with depression of the elderly. However, buffering effects of social support is not confirmed. Depression of older people is also associated with gender, household type, economic activity participation, and chronic diseases. Based on the findings, this study provides suggestions to prevent depression of older people and future research agenda.

  • This study examined the longitudinal relationship between paternal depressive symptoms and maternal depressive symptoms simultaneously. This study also identified the interplay of paternal and maternal depressive symptoms for predicting elementary children's language development, their problem behaviors and their school adjustment. Using the data from the Panel Study on Korean Children for the 4th-8th years (2011~2015 year), this study used the Latent Growth Curve Model, which is helpful for examining longitudinal relationship differences among variables. The sample subjects were 1,754 parents and children. The results are as follows. The initial level of paternal depressive symptoms had a positive impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. The initial level of maternal depressive symptoms had a negative impact on the rate of change in maternal depressive symptoms. Mothers' depressive symptoms showed not only the mothers' own depression problem. but also the self-effect and counterpart effect of depression on the fathers' depression problem. The rate of change in maternal depressive symptom mediated the relation between the initial level of parental depressive symptoms and children's receptive language, internalizing/externalizing problems, and school adjustment. Therefore, depression prevention and intervention programs for both fathers and mothers are needed for the healthy development and school adaptation of school-age children.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the relationship between individual-level social capital and depression. And, we assessed if depressive symptom mediates the relationship between social capital and self-rated health status. Methods: Data from the 2011 Community Health Survey were analyzed for this study. We used chi-square tests and analyzed a four step approach in which several regression analyses were conducted and significance of the coefficients was examined at each step. Results: In men, the results of controlling mediating factor (depression): social participation was not significantly associated with self-rated health status(p=0.082), the finding supports that social participation was fully mediated by depression. In women, the relationship between social capital(trust, social participation) and self-rated health status was partially mediated by depression. Conclusions: In order to increase self rated health status, not only improvement in trust and social participation are needed but effort to reduce depression must be combined.

  • Purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between the level of smartphone overdependence and depression among the high school student. Study subjects were 50 high school student. The assessment of the level of smartphone overdependence was used by the smartphone overdependence scale for adolescents and the assessment of the level of depression was used by Korean ver. of patient health questionnaire-9. As the results, the positive correlation was showed between the level of smartphone overdependence and depression and the statistically significant difference was showed. It was found that the higher the level of smartphone overdependence among high school students, the higher the level of depression. The smartphone overdependence among high school students could contribute to increase the level of depression. Thus, based on these results of this study, it is necessary to consider to reduce the level of smartphone overdependence and depression among high school students and subsequent studies should be conducted to clarify the casual relationship and influences of the level of smartphone overdependence and depression among high school students.

  • This study examined the longitudinal relationship between depressive symptoms and alcohol use based on the tension reduction hypothesis and the intoxication hypothesis considering for path of depressive symptoms on alcohol use and vice versa simultaneously. And this study examined the effect of psychosocial behavior factors (i.e. smoking level, self-esteem, satisfaction with family relationships, and satisfaction with social relationships) on depressive symptoms and alcohol use. Using the data on the Korea Welfare Panel Study for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years, this study were estimated using the Latent Growth Curve Model which is helpful for examining differences between the two. The results are as follows: the initial level of alcohol use had a positive impact on the rate of change in depressive symptoms, thereby supporting the intoxication hypothesis. Second, self-esteem and satisfaction with family relationships act as variables with the biggest effect on the initial level and the rate of change in depressive symptoms, whereas other psychosocial behavior factors such as smoking level and satisfaction with social relationship exert the largest influence over the initial level and the rate of change in alcohol use. This study has implications in that it clarified the confused relationship mechanism between alcohol use and depressive symptoms the two. Based on the finding of the study, political and practical implications were discussed.

  • This study attempts to investigate the trajectories of socio-economic deprivation on the depression trajectories among middle-aged individuals using a latent growth model over the last five years. Using the Korea welfare panel study data ranged from the year 2013 (8th wave) to the year 2017 (12th wave), a sample of 7,437 aged over 40 was selected. Three hypothesis was proposed as follows. Is the trajectory of depression changing over the years? Are the initial values of socio-economic deprivation causally related to the initial values of depression? Are the rates of change in socio-economic deprivation causally related to the rates of change in depression? Results showed that the growth curve of depression tended to decline negatively over the five-year period. As the intial values of socio-economic deprivation increased, so did the initial values of depression move upwards. Finally, as the changes of socio-economic deprivation tended to get larger, those changes of depression also accordingly increased as well. The public policy implications based on the current study were discussed to pay more attention to those middle-aged individuals suffering from socio-economic deprivations.
