  • Objectives : The authors purposed to present data for explaining gene-environmental interaction causing depressive disorder by examining the effects of genetic factors related to the serotonin system and environmental factors such as stressful life events in early adulthood. Methods : The subjects were 150 young adults(mean age 25.0${\pm}$0.54), a part of 534 freshmen who had completed the previous study of genotyping of TPH1 gene. We assessed characteristics of life events, depression and anxiety scale and checked if they had a depressive disorder with DSM-IV SCID interview. Along with TPH1 A218C genotype confirmed in previous study, TPH2 -1463G/A and 5HTR2A -1438A/G genes were genotyped using the SNaPshot$^{TM}$ method. Results : In comparison with the group without C allele of TPH1 gene, the number of life events had a significant effect on the probability of depressive disorder in the group with C allele. Other alleles or genotypes did not have a significant effect on the causality of life events and depressive disorder. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that TPH1 C allele is a significant predictor of onset of depressive disorder following environmental stress. It means that the TPH1 gene may affect the gene-environmental interaction of depressive disorder.

  • This study examines gender differentials in depression among Korean older adults. Using logistic regression and decomposition methods, this study analyzes factors that predict depression of a full sample and separate male/female samples, respectively. Further, this study decomposes factors that affect gender differentials in depression into two components: the distributions of individual variables and the returns to risk. This study finds the variables that separately predict depression by gender. For male, having a smaller social network is associated with depression; however for female, the number of falls is associated with depression. This study also finds that being married, having greater satisfaction with current financial situation, and having good physical health increases the gap between males' and females'depression. Married male have greater returns from marriage than females. If females had the same returns as male, then the gap would have decreased by about 40%.

With regard to economic resources, monthly household income, discrimination experiences of household heads, discrimination experienced by children, and overall discrimination experiences were significant. No significant variables were identified among single-parent and family characteristic factors. Therefore, it was evident that health factors and economic resources, as well as discrimination experiences, are important variables that increase depression in single-parent household heads. Methods: This cross-sectional study obtained data from the Community Health Survey 2018 in Jeollabuk-do. The dependent variable was depression measured by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The prevalence of depression was defined if total score of PHQ-9 was 10 or higher. A multilevel analysis was conducted to consider individual and regional level independent variables that could be risk factors for depression. Results: In the individual level, female gender and smokers had significantly higher odds ratios (ORs) for depression of 1.58 and 1.72, respectively. Subjects with economic activity, higher income and higher education had significantly lower ORs of 0.53, 0.41 and 0.66. In the regional level, higher greening rates and lower levels of PM2.5 had statistically lower ORs at the significance level of 10%. Conclusion: By conducting this study, risk factors associated with depression were identified in individual- and regional-level. This study suggests that health projects are needed to control regional level risk factors including community networks for mental health management in addition to the traditional individual level risk factors.
