The aim of this study was ti investigate the effects if socio-demographic factors, oral symptoms and oral health behaviors on dental caries. The multiple logistic regression was executed on oral health examination records and the information among all civil servants obtained by the National Health Insurance Corporation(NHC). After abjusting known risk factors, the most significant variable was income(OR=1.97). This cross-sectional study revealed various significant factors related to dental caries.
This study aims to assess the relationship between obesity and dental caries in adolescents. Data were used from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Data analysis was performed using the SPSS Ver 22.0 program, and complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze relationship dental caries and obesity according to gender in adolescents. The subjects of this study were 1,243 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years. The relationship between obesity and dental caries in adolescents according to gender was not confirmed after adjusting for confounding variables. Therefore, obesity prevention programs and oral care programs for adolescents will be necessary.
The study was intended to investigate the factors affecting dental caries in adults. To that end, adults aged 19 years and older among 10,113 subjects who completed the health-related questionnaire, medical examination and nutrition surveys in the first year (2013) of the 6th Korea National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, and 4,843 subjects categorized as patients with permanent teeth caries were included in the final analysis. The prevalence of dental caries in line with socio-economic aspects was found to be higher in men than in women. In view of education, the prevalence of dental caries was high in high school graduates, middle school graduates, college graduates and other advanced degree holders in the order named. Low monthly income earners showed the highest prevalence of dental caries. As for health-related lifestyles, the prevalence of dental caries was higher in smokers than in non-smokers. Obese subjects showed a little higher prevalence of dental caries compared to people of normal weight. Also, the prevalence was higher in those who failed to get oral examination than otherwise. Frequent daily toothbrushing and use of dental floss and interdental brush significantly decreased the prevalence of dental caries. In the logistic regression analysis with the presence or absence of dental caries employed as a dependent variable, gender, age, income level, smoking, oral examination and use of dental floss were found to serve as independent variables affecting dental caries. Therefore, Korean adults' socio-economic factors and lifestyles were proved to affect dental caries, which warrants some dental health programs and action plans designed to help lead healthy lifestyles whilst preventing dental caries and improving dental health in adults.
This study aims at examining the actual condition of recognition of dental caries(ACRDC), presenting a scheme to improve the recognition, and providing basic data necessary to prevent oral diseases, Dental caries (DC) which one of the three most important chronic diseases in Korea. A survey was conducted on ACRDC for about 390 people twenty and over who visited dental clinics for dental treatment 336 questionnaires with exception of omitted answer were used for statistical analysis. Many of them had never heard of DC and most of them failed to recognize it. People who experienced DC had a dental clinic as a main information channel and they were significant differences in those obtaining information through other channels(p=0.008). Univariate logistic regression analysis for effects on ACRDC demonstrated that possibility of subjects in their twenties recognizing DC more accurately than those in their forties Odds ratio(95% confidence Interval) was 2.06(1.16-3.66)(p=0.000), with the possibility of professionals recognizing the disease more accurately than those with other kinds of occupation 5.49(2.52-11.93)(p=0.000), showing statistically significant relevance. As for medical security, possibility of work insurance being related to more accurate recognition of dental caries than others was 1.95 (1.03-3.71)(p=0.003), with the possibility of subjects whose dental state was very good recognizing dental caries more accurately than those whose dental state was very bad 6.40(1.57-26.03) (p=0.002), showing statistically significant relevance. For prevention of DC, an education through experts working at a dental clinic are necessary for those in their twenties and over, who were other than professionals, who were insured for medical security via other than work insurance, and whose dental state was bad.

This study investigated 2,088 economically active workers aged 20 to 65 years selected from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to evaluate the relationship between chronic diseases and oral health behaviors among economic workers and examine the risk factors for oral diseases. The results of the study were as follows. Dental caries were related to subjective oral health status, toothache experience, orthodontic treatment experience, chewing problems, speaking problems, oral examination, and dental clinic use. Periodontal disease was associated with oral health status, toothache experience, orthodontic experience, and chewing and speaking problems. The risk factors for chronic diseases and oral health behavior were as follows. Hypertension, 1.37 times; obesity, 1.48 times; diabetes, 1.5 times; low HDL-cholesterol, 1.31 times; hepatitis A antibody, 1.53 times higher. Health status was found to be 1.70 times higher in dental caries and 2.10 times higher in periodontal disease. The tooth experience was 1.30 times higher in dental caries and 1.35 times higher in periodontal disease. Problems chewing were 1.76 times for dental caries and 1.78 times for periodontal disease. The possibility of dental caries and periodontal disease was 1.44 times higher. Smokers were 1.61 times more likely to have dental caries and 1.63 times more likely to have periodontal disease. These results suggest that periodontal diseases increase the risk of chronic diseases and oral health behavior increases the risk of dental caries and periodontal disease. Although dental caries seem to have a lower risk of becoming a chronic disease if only oral health care is good, it is considered that both chronic disease and oral health care are important for periodontal disease.

The aim of this study was to evaluate QLF (quantitative light-induced fluorescence) technology for the caries detection in primary teeth and validate the relationships between the cavity volume of carious lesions and QLF analysis results. Total 125 tooth surfaces include 53 occlusal surfaces, and 72 proximal surfaces were investigated with the portable QLF device for detection of dental caries in primary molars. Micro-CT radiograph was also performed to classify carious lesions and calculate the cavity volume. QLF showed good accuracy and reliability (sensitivity 0.75 - 0.94, specificity 0.82 - 0.95, and AUROC 0.88 - 0.98) for the caries detection in primary teeth except 𝚫R average results of proximal caries which showed relatively low values. Statistically significant relationships were found between 𝚫F average, QS-Index and the cavity volume according to Spearman rank-order correlation coefficients (r = 0.805 - 0.832, p < 0.001). QLF detection method would be a harmless and reliable way for children to diagnose dental caries without the concern about radiation exposure.
The purpose of this study was to examine the possibility of the existence of high-risk groups of dental caries and influential factors for the high-risk groups, as there was a possibility that certain people might especially be at risk of suffering from dental caries when decayed, missing, and filled teeth index were analyzed, which were the typical indicators of dental caries. The data of the 4th National Health & Nutrition Survey for 2007, 2008 and 2009 were analyzed. Significant caries index (SiC index) were calculated, which were one of the representative devices to indicate high-risk groups of dental caries, and the SiC index and related factors were analyzed by using $x^2$ (chi-square) test. Besides, logistic regression analysis was utilized to find out influential factors, and a statistical package STATA 11.0 was employed. As a result of analyzing what factors would be linked to high-risk groups of dental caries, it's found that women were more likely to belong to high-risk groups than men (p<0.01). How the related factors affected the high-risk groups was analyzed, and it's found that those who didn't find themselves to be in good oral health were more likely to be classified into a high-risk group, and that those who brushed their teeth three times a more a day on a regular basis were more likely to belong to a high-risk group than the others who didn't (p<0.01). Thus, SiC index were calculated in this study to confirm the existence of dental caries high-risk groups, and what factors impacted on the high-risk groups was ascertained. It's required to implement efficient national policies to step up the promotion of national oral health based on the findings of the study.

Current treatment concept of dental caries has been changed, because it has been proved that it is a preventable disease. The philosophy has been changed from purely restorative treatment to preventive caries control. Therefore the methods or criteria of oral examination has been changed. The clinician have to detect not only cavitation, but also the lesion of non-cavitation stage. International Caries Detection and Assessment System II (ICDAS II) was developed recently, which is a new criteria of classification of dental caries. This system was based on the current concept of prevention, early detection and patient-centered management of caries. Therefore this philosophy is in accord with the perspective of pediatric dentistry. The purpose of this article is to introduce this system for oral examination of children.

Dental caries is a multifactorial disease influenced by interactions between teeth, biofilm, dietary factors, and various biological, behavioral, sociocultural, and genetic factors. Recent research has shown that dental caries results from dysbiosis, an imbalance in the oral microbial community, shifting the concept from an infectious disease to a non-communicable disease (NCD). Dental caries shares similarities with other chronic NCDs such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, as they all relate to dietary intake, lifestyle habits, and environmental factors. Considering the high prevalence of dental caries and its impact on people's health and quality of life, it is important to understand dental caries as an NCD and develop effective oral health management strategies. Ecological prevention methods and efficient public health policies should be provided to reduce risk factors associated with dental caries.
