Growth Characteristics of Adenophora triphylla var. japonicum by Shading Treatments (차광처리에 의한 잔대의 생육특성)

  • This study is an analysis of the initial growth of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica, and the growth of their above- and underground parts by means of shading treatment in order to provide a basic data that can be used in growing A. triphylla var. japonica in mountainous area. As for the rate of sprouting by shading treatment, 25% treatment and control showed the earliest sprouting. The leaf unfolding had the same order as the rate of sprouting. The analysis of the characteristics of growth of above- and underground parts showed that the growth of aboveground parts are excellent in the 25% treatment. 25% treatment were shown to be the longest in the total length of roots and root projection area. Control were discovered to be the most prominent in root surface area, root diameter, and root volume. 75% and 25% treatment in distribution by root diameter showed 72.4% and 69.5% of very fine root(>0.5mm), respectively.

Consumer Preference Analysis of Korean Red Ginseng Tonic for Revitalizing Korean Ginseng Industry (국내 인삼산업 활성화를 위한 홍삼토닉 소비자 선호분석)

  • This study attempts to analyze the consumers' preference on Korean Red Ginseng Tonic, which is an essential product to revitalize Korean ginseng industry, using choice experiment method. The attributes used in the choice experiment were the ginseng age, good agricultural products(GAP), sugar, and price. A total of 1,796 experiments were collected and the value of each preferred attributes was estimated using a multinomial logistic model. The result shows that the products made from six-year-old and GAP(Good Agriculture Practice) approved Korean ginseng with less sugar were preferred. These estimated monetary values of marginal willingness to pay were about 94,000 KRW, 89,000 KRW, 5,000 KRW, respectively. Thus, the efforts to introduce and advertize GAP approved ginseng while developing new products with preferred attributes by general publics are necessary in the short run. In addition, we may need to consider developing the way to promote products using 4- and 5-year-old ginsengs, which are relatively underestimated in their health effectiveness but highly productive for farmers in the long run.

Rice Cultivar Breeding for Rice Flour with Low Amylose by Tissue Culture (저아밀로스 특성 및 쌀가루 적합 벼 품종 육성)

  • Rice consumption in Korea is continuously decreasing; therefore, methods for reducing rice stocks are now being proposed. Increasing the consumption of rice and reduce these stocks will require that the rice processing industry be developed beyond simply using cooked rice as food. The Korean people's eating habits have also diversified recently, and the consumption of bread is increasing. Therefore, breeding a cultivar for rice flour is now necessary. Here, a line suitable for processing into rice flour was cultivated by deriving a mutant line by tissue culture of Ilpum. Mutant populations were investigated for major agricultural traits in the field, and grain characteristics and endosperm characteristics were investigated after harvest. Among the lines, line 29111 had similar agricultural characteristics to the background Ilpum, and excellent grain quality, and was selected for further analysis. The physicochemical properties that determine taste were similar or improved. However, unlike Ilpum, 29111 had a non-uniform starch structure and a characteristic powdery endosperm because large and male starch grains are evenly distributed. Therefore, 29111 was viewed as a breeding line suitable for processing and for excellent agricultural characteristics and taste. The added value can be increased by diversifying the uses of rice. The taste was improved and a method for breeding cultivars with grain characteristics for glutinous rice that would satisfy both producers and consumers was presented.

Insecticidal response of 14 insecticides against Korean Bemisia tabaci local populations (14종 살충제의 담배가루이 성충에 대한 살충제 약제반응 조사)

  • Bemisia tabaci Gennadius, one of the most invasive insect pests, has spread quickly nationwide since it was introduced to South Korea in 2008. The use of insecticides is the main management strategy for this pest, but the control efficiency has been decreased due to insecticide resistance. We collected 12 local B. tabaci populations to investigate the regional differences in efficiency and observed the mortality from 14 commercial insecticides applied at recommended concentrations (RC) and dilutions (0.1 RC and 0.01 RC) using the leaf dipping bioassay. Except for etofenprox (46-64%), thiamethoxam (37-60%), pyriproxyfen (21-61%), and pyridaben (61-65%), the other insecticides showed excellent insecticidal efficacy of 70% to 100% at their RC. In particular, flupyradifurone, emamectin benzoate, and cyantraniliprole showed high insecticidal efficacy of over 90% in all of the tested populations. Some insecticides that rapidly decreased in activity (less than 30%) at diluted concentrations or showed high resistance levels in nearby regions were classified for cautious use due to the possibility or potential to develop resistance. The results provide selected insecticides for B. tabaci control by region and could contribute to reducing insecticide abuse and increasing insecticidal efficiency in farming fields.

A New Soybean Cultivar 'Daewang' with High Quality and Large Seed Size (장류용 고품질, 대립 콩 신품종 '대왕')

  • A new soybean cultivar 'Daewang' was released by Agricultural Research & Extension Services, Gangwon Province in 2008. The Goals of breeding the variety was for large seed size, high yield, lodging tolerance and resistance to diseases such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and bacterial pustule. 'Daewang' was derived from the cross of GWS91, which has yellow seed coat, large seed size and late maturity, and 'Seokryang-putkong', which has large seed size and early maturity. The preliminary, advanced and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection were carried out from 2002 to 2007. It has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, yellow seed coat, yellow hilum and large seed weight (33.6 g per 100 seeds). The maturity date of 'Daewang' is 16 days later than the 'Taekwang'. It has a high content of total isoflavone ($1,851{\mu}g/g$). The average yield of 'Daewang' was 2.68 MT/ha in the regional yield trials (RYT) carried out in four locations in Gangwon province from 2004 to 2007 which was 4 percent higher than the check cultivar 'Taekwang'.

Quality Properties of Commercial Chungkukjang in Korea (국내 시판 청국장의 품질 및 특성)

  • This study aimed to improve the quality with acomparison of quality characteristics by collecting Chungkukjang in the market, and to establish the foundation data for starter, which support to manufacture standardized Chungkukjang products. Firstly, Chungkukjang was collected from the industrial company and home-made production which located in the several regions of Korea. Moisture contents of collected Chungkukjang were ranged from 56.3 to 62.1% and salinity was 0.23 to 11.51%. Total nitrogen and amino nitrogen contents of Chungkukjang ranged from 5.82 to 8.76% and 173.71 to 2,700.66 mg%, respectively. Nitrogen degradation ratio, which means the proportion of amino nitrogen to total nitrogen, was 2.88~26.93%. Collected Chungkukjang AG and Z have predominant value in histamine and tyramine contents as 755.40 and 1913.51 mg/kg, respectively, and viable cells count in collected Chungkukjang, maximum was $9.6{\times}10^9CFU/g$. As a result, most products showed various properties in flavor and nutrition, and it is supposed to be caused on use of different soybean species and unstandardized fermentation process.

A New Rose Cultivar 'Innocence' with White-pink Flower for Bouquet (부케용 백분홍색 장미 「이노센스」 육성)

  • A new standard white-pink flower rose cultivar 'Innocence' was bred from the cross between white standard cultivar 'Juvena' and green-white standard cultivar 'Green Success' at the Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services (JARES). The cross was made in 2001 and, 'Innocence' was finally selected in 2006 after investigating characteristics for three times from 2004 to 2006. 'Innocence' a white-pink standard cultivar has good flower shape with few prickles. The major characteristics of this cultivar were $118.7stems{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in year yield, 68.0 cm in length of cut flower, 10.9 cm in flower diameter, 34.4 in petal number, and 10.7 days in vase life. This cultivar can be propagated by both cutting and grafting. The consumer's preference of this cultivar was relatively higher than that of control cultivar, 'Rose Yumi'.

Selection of Lipoxygenase, Kunitz Trypsin inhibitor and 7Sα′-subunit Protein Free Soybean Strain (Lipoxygenase, Kunitz Trypsin inhibitor, 7Sα′-subunit 단백질이 결핍된 콩 계통의 선발)

  • Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) seed is the main source of protein and oil for human and animal. The use of soybean protein has been expanded in the food industry due to their excellent nutritional benefits. But, antinutritional and allergenic factors are exist in the raw mature soybean. Lipoxygenase, Kunitz trypsin inhibitor (KTI) protein, and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-subunit$ of 7S globulin are main antinutritional factors in soybean seed. Breeding of a new soybean strain with lacking these components is needed. The objective of this research was to select new soybean line with lipoxygenase-free, KTI-free, and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-subunit$ free (lx1lx1lx2lx2lx3lx3titicgy1cgy1 genotype). Total 434 $F_2$seeds were obtained from the cross of cultivar, "Gaechuck#2" and PI506876. Presence and absence of lipoxygenase, KTI protein, and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-subunit$ of 7S globulin was tested by SDS electrophoresis using a partial seed of each $F_2$seed. Only one $F_2$seed with lacking these three components was selected and was planted to $F_2$plant. Absence of lipoxygenase, KTI, and ${\alpha}^{\prime}-subunit$ protein was confirmed on the $F_3$seeds harvested. Selected line with lx1lx1lx2lx2lx3lx3titicgy1cgy1 genotype might be useful for soybean breeding.

Validation and Content Analysis of Putrescine in the Venom of Honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) (서양종꿀벌 일벌독에 함유된 putrescine 밸리데이션 및 함량 분석)

  • The venom of honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) is used to treat many diseases because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Bee venom consists of several biologically active molecules and exhibits remarkable anti-cancer effects. However, biological amines, which exhibit diverse functionality such as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, have not been previously reported in bee venom. In this study, we determined the content of putrescine in bee venom by using ultra-performance liquid chromatography. The specificity, accuracy, and precision of the assay were assessed, and the assay validated. The linearity of the putrescine assay was r ≥ 0.99, indicating a moderate level of putrescine in the bee venom. The limit of detection and limit of quantification were both 0.9 ㎍/mL, while the rate of recovery was 96.4%-99.9%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) of the intra-day precision and inter-day precision of the putrescine assay were 0.16% - 0.23% and 0.09% - 0.36%, respectively, with the RSD ≤ 5% indicating excellent precision. Thus, the linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, and recovery rate of the putrescine assay were satisfactory. The analysis of the bee venom showed that the putrescine content was 3.1 ± 0.09 mg/g. This study provides fundamental data on putrescine content in bee venom, which will prove useful in further studies of its bioactivity.

Development of suitable substrate of Sparassis latifolia for bottle cultivation (꽃송이버섯 병재배 적합 배지 개발)

  • This study sought to identify the optimum substrate composition for the stable bottle cultivation of Sparassis latifolia. The main substrate was fermented larch sawdust. Six nutrient sources were mixed at a maximum volume ratio of 20%. The fresh weight of fruit body was the highest at 128.5 g for GMSL69033 and 126.6 g for 'Neoul' in the treatments of beet pulp and corn flour in a volume ratio of 15:5. In addition, the total cultivation period was 94 days, which was shorter than that required for other treatments. The selected substrate characteristics were pH 4.7, C:N (carbon to nitrogen) ratio of 106:4, moisture content of 70%, and air filling porosity of 38%. We plan to develop new income items through research on mycelial incubation and fruit body growth conditions.
