  • In order to elucidate the spatiotemporal variations of marine environmental parameters, we collected seawater samples in the middle east coast of Korea in 2013-2014. A high temperature and low salinity were distinctively observed in the summer and a low temperature and high salinity pattern in the winter. The temperature of the bottom water was in the range of $2^{\circ}C$ to $7^{\circ}C$, with the temperature being relatively high in the winter, while the salinity was measured to be around 34, with no large differences across the seasons. The dissolved oxygen concentrations were in the range of $7mg\;L^{-1}$ to $12mg\;L^{-1}$, and it was relatively high in May compared to other seasons. The seawater temperature and dissolved oxygen concentration at the surface layer showed a significant negative correlation in the autumn and winter seasons, based on which it is seemed that water temperature is the main factor controlling the amount of dissolved oxygen in the autumn and winter seasons. The dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and silicate (DSi) increased 11- and 7-fold, respectively, in the winter compared to the summer. The DIN to DIP (dissolved inorganic phosphorus) ratio for the surface seawater was approximately 16, but it was relatively low in the spring season. On the other hand, the DIN to DIP ratio was relatively high in the summer. Based on this, it is seemed that nitrogen and phosphorus were the growth-limiting nutrients for phytoplankton in the spring and summer, respectively. Water quality was I (excellent) ~III (medium) level at the most stations except for some stations (level IV) during the autumn season, having low dissolved oxygen saturations.

  • To determine the temporal variations of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and SGD-driven nutrients inputs, we measured the seepage rate and the nutrient concentrations of pore water/groundwater in Bangdu Bay of Jeju Island at two and three month intervals from September 2009 to September 2010. The seepage rate of groundwater ranged from 0 to 330 cm/day (average ~170 cm/day) during the five sampling periods, which increased sharply from high tide to low tide due to changes in hydraulic pressure gradient between water table in land and water sea level in the coastal ocean by the tidal cycles. The submarine inputs of groundwater were also relatively higher in summer than in winter. The nutrient fluxes from SGD were about 90~100%, 70~95%, and 65~100% of the total input (except from open ocean waters) for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphorus (DIP), and silicate (DSi), respectively, potentially supporting about 0.9~33 g $carbon/m^2/day$ of new primary production in Baugdu Bay. Thus, our study suggests that SGD-driven nutrients may play an important role in the eutrophication and biological production in the coastal ocean of Jeju Island.

  • To elucidate the cause of Pyropia yezoensis discoloration, the characteristics of an aquaculture environment, as well as the morphology and cell structure of P. yezoensis thallus were examined from 2011 to 2014 in aquaculture farms of the Jeonbuk province. P. yezoensis discoloration did not occur in aquaculture farms at Gaeyado located in the Geum River Estuary but occurred in aquaculture farms of Seonyudo, Munyeodo, Biando, and Docheongri near the Saemangeum embankment in November 2011 and April and November 2014. The injured leaves showed discoloration and intracellular vacuole hypertrophy. During the study period, discoloration occurred at concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) below 5μM and 0.4μM, respectively. As a result, Pyropia discoloration was determined by low concentrations of DIN and DIP. DIN deficiency affects the early stage and low DIP concentration affects the end stage of aquaculture.

  • To clarify the seasonal changes of the phytoplankton community in seagrass beds, the abundance and distribution of phytoplankton, and environmental factors were measured in seagrass beds: in the Dongdae Bay and Aenggang Bay on the southern coast of Korea, and off Seungbong Island on the western coast of Korea, in October 2002, January, March, and June 2003. Water temperature, salinity, SPM, chlorophyll a, aboveground biomass of seagrass, DIN and DIP concentrations significantly changed within the sampling time. The taxa of phytoplankton observed in seagrass beds were classified as 3 divisions, 3 classes,4 orders,16 families, 27 genera, 65 species. 50 species of diatoms were recognized with 14 species of dinoflagellates, and 1 species of silicoflagellate. The species of genera Coscinodiscus and Thalassiosira were dominant all around the study areas but Peridinium granii, Eucampia zodiacus and Pleurosigma elongatum were seasonally dominant. Phytoplankton standing crops varied from minimum of $0.6{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$ (June, Dongdae Bay) to maximum$21.1{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$(March, Aenggang Bay). The standing crops and species composition of phytoplankton were relatively lower and simpler than those of other southern and western coastal areas. Seasonal variations of diatom standing crops in seagrass beds were attributed to seasonal changes in DIN and in DIP of water column.

  • Wetlands are a well known ecosystem which have high spatial-temporal heterogeneity of chemical characteristics. This high heterogeneity induces diverse biogeochemical processes, such as aerobic decomposition, denitrification, and plant productivity in wetlands. Understanding the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and inorganic nitrogen in wetlands is important because DOC and inorganic nitrogen are main factors controlling biological processes in wetlands. In this study, we assessed spatial distribution of DOC and inorganic nitrogen with relation to the different hydrology and vegetation in created wetlands. Both DOC and nitrate contents were significantly higher in vegetated areas than open areas. Different water levels also affected DOC contents and their quality. Average DOC contents were $0.37mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ in deep riparian (DR) and $0.31mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ in shallow riparian (SR). These results appeared to be related to the interaction between carbon supply by vegetation and microbial decomposition. On the other hand, inorganic nitrogen contents were not affected by water level differences. This result indicates that presence/absence of vegetation could be a more important factor than hydrology in the spatial dynamics of inorganic nitrogen. In conclusion, we observed that vegetation and hydrology differences induced spatial distribution of carbon and nitrogen which are directly related to biogeochemical processes in wetlands.

  • We have evaluated the ammonium data in seawater as a potential short-term index for marine environment through the following steps. 1. reviewing of chemical characteristics of ammonium in seawater, 2. comparative relationships of ammonium data with other water quality indices such as DO, COD, and nutrients from Typical Marine Environment(TME) and Special Marine Environment(SME). Ammonium data generally represent negative correlation with DO, while positive correlation with COD. In particular, under frequent cases of seawater conditions showing similar concentration of COD or DO, we have limited choice of explanation for such situation. However ODIN(ODIN/RDIN) or RDIN(RDIN/TDIN) ratio could provide advanced information to understand these seawater conditions. Based on these results, we suggest ammonium data as a potential short-period index for transilient marine environment, such as benthic flux of bottom sediment, hypoxia, and algal bloom. Under overcoming several handicaps, ammonium data could be an useful tool for better understand short transformation of marine environment.

  • Sewage has been almost treated by secondary treatment process. Secondary-treated effluent of sewage treatment plant caused the pollution of nearby beach. Nitrogen(N) and Phosphorus(P) in effluent water have caused many problems on estuary, such as red tide, eutrophication and aquatic toxicity. Therefore, the effective nitrogen and phosphorus removal from sewage treatment plants is necessary to prevent those pollution problems. However, little sewage treatment plant in Korea is effectively being operated for the removal of the nutrients. This study is analyzed for the effectiveness of cost when tertiary treatment process and Ocean Outfall are applied for the water quality of Suyong Bay After secondary treatment process, the effluent was discharged from the seabed in the depth of 32m of 4000m offshore. Pollutant concentration is decreased as much as the 180 times after the result of initial dilution, so that environmental protection requirement of Suyong Bay can satisfied. This Ocean Outfall process can save the 2.6~3.5 times as much as the cost of construction and operation for tertiary treatment process running over a 20 year.

  • In order to identify long-term trends of water quality parameters in Lake Kyeongpo, Mann-Kendall test, Sen's slope estimator and linear regression were applied on data, with 15 parameters from three different sites and rainfall, monitored once in every two months from March to November during 1998~2013. Seasonal variation analysis only used Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator. Analysis result showed that salinity, transparency and nutrient variables (total phosphorus, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen) were only parameters having statistically significant trend. In linear regression analysis, salinity (surface and bottom layer of all sites) and transparency (only at site 1), were figured out with statistically significant increasing trend, while in non-parametric statistical method, salinity and transparency in all sites (surface, middle, deep) were figured out with statistically significant increasing trend. Water quality parameters showing statistically significant decreasing trends were dissolved oxygen (surface layer of site 1 and bottom layer of sites 2 and 3), total phosphorus (sites 1 and 2), dissolved inorganic phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen in the linear regression analysis and, dissolved oxygen (bottom layer of all sites), total phosphorus, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, total nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and ammonia nitrogen in the non-parametric method. Seasonal trend analysis result showed that salinity, turbidity, transparency and suspended solids in spring, salinity, transparency, nitrate nitrogen and suspended solids in summer and temperature, salinity, transparency and suspended solids in fall were the variables depending on the season with increasing trends. In general, rainfall during the research period showed decreasing trend. The significant reduction trends of nutrients in Lake Kyeongpo were believed to be related to lagoon restoration and water management project run by Gangneung city and under-water wear removal, but further detailed studies are needed to know the exact causes.

  • To understand differences of environmental factors and planktonic communities in closed (CS) versus open (OS) enclosed experimental systems, we performed a study on a 100-L indoor-type artificial marine microcosm. For environmental factors, including water temperature, dissolved inorganic phosphorus, and dissolved silica, there were no significant differences between CS and OS; however, salinity was higher in CS than that of OS due to the evaporation effect. The concentration of dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic nitrogen was lower in CS than in OS. The abundance of phytoplankton was lower in CS than in OS. However, abundance of autotrophic nanoflagellates and heterotrophic bacteria varied inversely with that of phytoplankton abundances. In particular, the abundance of heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates increased with bacterial growth after a time lag. Therefore, environmental factors and planktonic communities in CS gradually changed over time and characterized a different artificial ecosystem than in OS.
