  • Melting slag generated from municipal-incinerator ash contains lots of impurities which have adverse effects on zeolite synthesis. These impurities are detrimental to zeolite synthesis, and the yield and purity of zeolite was decreased. And thus its performance is lowered. In melting slag, there are lots of components such as $Fe_2O_3$, FeO and CaO. To remove these impurities, we treated the melting slag with hydrochloric acid at initial pH 1, 3, 5, and 7. After the treatment, the $SiO_2,\;Fe_2O_3,\;and\;TiO_2$ ratios increased, but the $Al_2O_3,\;FeO,\;CaO,\;Na_2O$ and MgO ratios decreased. We reacted these treated slag in a NaOH solution under hydrothermal conditions at $80^{\circ}C$. The hydrothermal products from the slag and the slag treated at pH 7 and pH 5 were determined to be tobermorite, whereas those at pH 3 and pH 1, Na-P1 and Na-X zoelite respectively. CaO was found to inhibit the synthesis of zeolite.

  • As a basic study on the conversion of molten converter slag to the ordinary portland cement, the effects of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ addition on the interface reaction between solid CaO and molten converter slag has been studied. Alumina added converter slag whose basicity was controlled to 1 and 2 was melted and hold for 30 minutes in MgO crucible at $1500^{\circ}C$. Then sintered CaO pellet heated at the same temperature was dipped into the molten slag and held for 30minutes. After the reaction, the crucible was cooled in air and the specimen was cut off to the horizontal direction of the crucible. The dissolution rate of CaO pellet with the addition of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ was measured by the change of the radius or sintered CaO pellet and the interface layer was observed by SEM/EDX. As a result. At the basicity 2 slag, thickness of created $C_{3}S$ layer increased 3.5 times and quantity of $C_{6}AF_{2}\;or\;C_{4}AF$ phase increase 2 times than baisicy 1 slag.

  • In this study, $Fe_2O_3$ was added as a flux to decrease melting temperature and refine during melting of Cu powder from scraped surface of the waste PCB (printed circuit board). The effect of $Fe_2O_3$ ratio to Cu powder and temperature on the recovery of Cu and content of impurities were investigated. It was found that the recovery of Cu was increased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and reaction temperature. The contents of O, Si and Fe in Cu phase were also decreased with increasing addition ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and temperature. The formation of fayalite ($2FeO{\cdot}SiO_2$) and iron oxides phases in the slag was confirmed by XRD analysis after reaction with $Fe_2O_3$. Therefore, it was considered that the decrease of melting temperature and viscosity of slag by formation of fayalite slag contributed remarkably to the Cu recovery.

  • As a basic study to recover the copper from the copper converter slag, the characterisitcs of converter slag was studied. The results obtained in this work are as follows. 1. The copper converter slag is composed of Cu, $Cu_2$S, $Fe_3$$O_4$, Fayalite and silicate. 2. It is supposed that magnetite in converter slag is oxidized to hematite at $720^{\circ}C$ and this phase is soluted to fayalite. 3. As the converter slag is added in the water solution, pH increased and the heavy metal ions in the water are adsorbed on the slag. 4. Work index of the converter slag cooled for the 10 hour and the 2 hour are 25~27 kWh/ton and 35 kWh/ton, respectively. 5. In the case of grinding test of converter slag, fayalite in converter slag is easily grinded than magnetite in converter slag.

  • As a basic study for recycling molten converter slag as an ordinary portland cement (OPC) by a conversion process, the reaction mechanism and the rate of the formation of $C_4AF$ which is one of the main components of OPC were investigated. The converter slag whose basicity was controlled by adding reagent grade $SiO_2$ was melted and hold for 30 minutes in MgO crucible at $1300^{\circ}C{\sim}1350^{\circ}C$. Then, the sintered CaO pellet heated at the same temperature was dipped into the molten slag and hold for $10{\sim}30$minutes. After the reaction, the crucible was cooled in air and the specimen was cut off to the horizontal direction of the crucible. The dissolution rate of $C_3A$ pellet was measured by the change of radius of the sintered $C_3A$ pellet, and the formed phase of $C_4AF$ was observed by SEM/EDX. As a result, the dissolution rate of $C_3A$ pellet into molten slag was increased from $0.75{\times}10^{-4}(cm/sec)$ at $1300^{\circ}C$ to $1.67{\times}10^{-4}(cm/sec)$ at $1350^{\circ}C$, and the mixed layer of $C_4AF$ and $C_{12}A_7$ was found between slag and $C_3A$ pellet.

  • The aggregate properties of chilled converter slag reformed by atomizing liquid converter slag were investigated. The properties of mortars with various replacement of standard sand by chilled converter slag as recycled fine aggregates were investigated. The particle shape of chilled converter slag by atomizing was a sphere with an open cavity which is enclosed with two layers like a bored coconut. Specific gravity, unit weight and fineness modulus increased with increasing the replacement, and solid content had the maximum at the replacement of 75% and water absorption rate had the minimum at the replacement. The hardened mortars with higher replacements have the higher specific gravity and the denser texture.

  • This study was intended to examine the possibility of reducing hydration heat by FA substitution and combination of slag (CGS) from coal gasification power generation (IGCC) with mixed aggregate for concrete. The analysis results showed good results if liquidity increases as the ratio of CGS increases, air volume decreases, and compressive strength is mixed up to 25% in the residual aggregate. The results showed that the heat of hydration was reduced compared to plain due to the boron content of CGS as the CGS substitution rate increased, but it was larger due to the combination with FA substitution. It was found that the heat of hydration was reduced.
