  • Trade areas of the commercial centers in Chongiu City are rapidly changing as the urban spacial structure is transformed, consumer behaviors are changed and large shopping stores are located in the area. The City's CBD has been in the Sung-an-gil district. The trade areas of the CBD have expanded along the major roads in the directions of north, south and west from the Sang-dang park. Especially, two newly formed secondary commercial centers are noticeable: one is the center around the express bus terminal in Gagyong-dong, and the other is formed in the Yongam, Bunpyong and Sannam district. As such changes are intensified, small retailers in the traditional markets that are mainly concentrated in the Yukgerri market place have faced hardship in business and management. The commercial hardship has been hastened up by openings of large discount stores and expanding tendency of internet shopping businesses. Acknowledging the changes in the business environment of traditional markets, this paper attempts to suggest policies to gentrificate the declining market areas in the CBD. The suggested polices are differentiated according to the types of traditional markets, stores. and merchants. And also suggestion is provided regarding amendments of the City's codes.

  • This study developed an operating rule curve (ORC) for multipurpose water supply (irrigation and environmental water) in heightened agricultural reservoir. Among the 20 reservoirs in improvement project of agricultural reservoir dam heightening, the 4 representative reservoirs (Ungyang, Gungchon, Yongam and Unam) were selected for the study according to the analysis of statistical characteristics. Available environmental water supply amounts during irrigation and non-irrigation periods, which is the range from release restricted water level to high water level were estimated by water balance analysis using reservoir operation model. Reliability, resiliency and vulnerability criteria for water system performance were used to assess the multiple water supply capacity. The ORC was presented as the percentile rank for the daily reservoir water level from the results of reservoir operation using the past couple of decades weather data. The water levels for each percentile were divided into 3 buffer sections representing drought (5~25%), normal (25~75%), and flood (75~95%) year to operate the heightened agricultural reservoir with ORC.

  • The materials generating from volcanic eruption are volcanic gases, lavas and pyroclastic materials. Volcanic ash which has small-grain size (< 2 mm in diameter) can be moved easily and disperse widely, thus it may affect to communities across hundreds of square kilometers. The impacts from volcanic ash fall on people, structures, equipments, plants and livestock largely depend on ash thickness. According to increasing ash thickness, the intensity and area of damage may increase and affect significant damages not to human health but also to infrastructures. To reduce the impacts from volcanic ash fall, we have to establish the guidances about the nature and extent of the hazard and prepare the actions to increase abilities of communities to manage hazard. Although we don't have any experience caused by volcanic ash fall during and after volcanic eruption, we need to prepare the impacts of volcanic ash fall for future eruption in the areas surrounding Korea.

  • Peperite exposed along the Dajeonsa basalt in Mt.Juwang, Cheongsong emerged as a consequence of the simultaneity of volcano-sedimentary sequences. This study aims to classify peperites as morphological characteristics and infer the formation process by the field investigation, image analysis, X-Ray Diffractometer and polarization microscope for the magma-sediment interaction mechanism and paleoenvironment. As a result of the field investigation globular(fluidal) peperite is the representative feature at the bottom of Dajeonsa basalt, sub-angular peperite at the middle and irregular peperite at the top. Peperite domains range from sheet and pod or feeder conduit. Although the study that the morphologies of peperite are controled by the sorts of sediment and lava or magma has tended to center around the peperite, the study addresses not single mechanism but the multi-stage mechanism because Mt.juwang peperite, under the same conditions, varies in shapes and sizes and also the ratio of sediments that show the most change of the peperite affects to the formation of peperite.

  • The slope gradient of the Korean Peninsula was analyzed by using DEM(DTED level 1). The Peninsula has high percentages of gentle slopes. But low plains and very steep slope regions are scarcely distributed in the Peninsula. Altitude lower than 150m areas are composed of plains and undulated plains. The steepest and most rugged topographies are observed in the range of altitude from 500m to 1,000m areas. The areas of altitude greater than 1,000m show plateau landscapes. By overlapping digital geology maps and the gradient grade maps, We revealed the characteristics of slope regions by geological districts. High latitude with steep slope are well developed in the geological districts of granitic gneiss(ARgr) and gneiss($PR_1$) of the Pre-Cambrian, sandstone of the Paleozoic era(P-T), and sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era($J_2$). Low altitude with gentle slope areas are representative in the districts of granite of the Mesozoic era($Jgr_1$), the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of the Mesozoic era($K_1$, $K_2$) and the Cenozoic strata(N). Basalt extruded the Quaternary($Q_1$) are observed in the areas of very gentle slope but greater than 1,000m altitude.

  • This study, geological survey was carried out in order to study on the geology, geological structure and volcanic activity of the Ulleung-do volcano body. Ulleung-do is the volcano body of about 3,000m heights from the East Sea seabed. The geology of Ulleung-do is divided into basaltic agglomerate, trachytic agglomerate, trachyte, trachytic pumice and trachyandesite in ascending orders. The faults in caldera of Nari Basin came to make the reverse triangle style in compliance with sinking. The faults in circumference of Nari Basin are ranging with northeast-southwest direction and northwest-southeast direction. The Quaternary volcanic activities in the Ulleung-do are divided into 5 activity period. The engineering geologists and the applied geologists were not easy to apply because complicated geology of Ulleung-do. Therefore, this study supplied simple geology of Ulleung-do for them.

  • With the aiming to improve the comprehension of an expansion process of perlite, a numerical study has been carried out, concerning a water vapor bubble growth in a softened perlite melt. Isothermal case of the model is investigated and compared with the experimental results. Water content is an intrinsic parameter in a perlite expansion. With increasing water content, the expansion time is faster. But it can not be changed easily in an industrial process. Initial temperature is a changeable parameter in an industrial process. Higher initial temperature hastens the expansion time and this can be a key parameter in an industrial process. Experimental results are observed by SEM. Increasing initial temperature, perlite shape becomes close to sphere. Calculated bubble growth results are compared with experimental results. Packing density is measured and compared with simulated results. These results indicate that some other factors are applied on the model during heat transformation to work.

  • There are two methods to survey the natural cave. One is plane table surveying and the other is recording chart surveying. The drawing maps drawn by these methods are 2D. Furthermore, it is difficult to figure out the accurate dimension about full sections and whole interior products because of use of plane table and recording chart. Accordingly, in this study, the 3D spatial information about Dangcheomuldonggul was constructed by the Terrestrial LiDAR and high resolution digital camera where is belong to Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes as the first World Natural Heritage of the Republic of Korea. Also, the utilization possibility of 3D spatial information was suggested to the basic data of deformation and change detection through structure analysis, section analysis, shape analysis, and interior products analysis.

  • The development of dual volcanic chains, parallel to the trend of the subduction trench, is observed in the southern part of Korea. Elsewhere on the Earth volcanic arcs dominantly consist of two such chains. In the southern part of Korea, two volcanic chains within a single volcanic arc was developed. Kyongsang basin, where the first volcanic chain located, and Youngdong-Kwangju depression zone where the second volcanic zone located, showed sub-parallel volcanic rock distributed areas. Concentrations of incompatible elements in the southern part of Korea samples show clear across-arc variations, with lavas from the first volcanic chain being most depleted in these elements, all incompatible element concentrations increase towards the second volcanic chain. The above across-arc variation may be caused by the difference in solid phases coexisting with the fluid phases during the dehydration processes. The concentrations of incompatible elements, Zr/Y ratios, and Rb/K ratios indicate that the second volcanic chain (Youngdong-Kwangiu depression zone) was generated by low degrees of partial melting at the deeper depth compared to the conditions of the first volcanic chain (Kyongsang basin) and residual garnet probably attributed to the their partial melting.
